Shall Old Harmonians Be Forgot and Never Brought to Mind? Not on my watch!
I was sort of figuring on posting some New Year's Harmonian stuff to mark a very pleasant year with that bunch, but then I realized I'd actually be miles away from my internet connection and partying on New Year's Eve, so here it is early.

So we've seen the Harmonians who think JK Rowling is "bitch-ass crack whore," what about the ones who still worship her as a tricky goddess who's actually writing H/Hr? Enter the Portkey thread: Serious Analysis of the Interview, Line-by-Line Harmonian Scrutiny... Arm Wild goes at 'The Interview' with a chainsaw all his developed critical faculties and proves JKR is really planning to write H/Hr. File this one under 'fannish absurdities,' because Arm Wild should be indicted for his assault on meaning and anguage. While we're at it, I suggest banning him from ever using a dictionary again.

I'm posting some of the highlights of the 'essay,' with Arm Wild's bits in bold and quotes from Rowling in italics.

Ok I know this might have been done before, but I have decided to post a
line-by-line, serious analysis of THE interview (basically my own commentary
after every important line). The point is to work through the interview slowly,
with an open mind, and discover just how "sunk" we really are...

*snip*

There's a theory - this applies to detective novels, and then Harry, which is
not really a detective novel, but it feels like one sometimes - that you
should not have romantic intrigue in a detective book. Dorothy L. Sayers, who is
queen of the genre said - and then broke her own rule, but said - that there
is no place for romance in a detective story except that it can be useful to
camouflage other people's motives. That's true; it is a very useful trick.
I've used that on Percy and I've used that to a degree on Tonks in this book,
as a red herring. But having said that, I disagree inasmuch as mine are very
character-driven books, and it's so important, therefore, that we see these
characters fall in love, which is a necessary part of life.

Ok JKR is telling us that romance is important in hp one way or
another...something we've always known.
Notice that she said "romantic intrigue" is important. Definitions of intrigue:

a crafty and involved plot to achieve your usually sinister ends
cause to be interested or curious
a clandestine love affair
scheme: form intrigues (for) in an underhand manner

Emphasis mine. If JKR hits us with HHr as her final ultimate romance, after hbp,
it would definately seem "crafty and involved". It would definately seem
"clandestine". It would definately be "underhand". This is romantic intrigue!
JKR could be telling us that hbp was part of her "intrigue", setting us up for
HHr!

*snip*

JKR: Well no, I'm not going to - Emerson, I am not going to say they're
delusional! They are still valued members of my readership! I am not going to
use the word delusional. I am however, going to say — now I am trusting both
of you to do the spoiler thing when you write this up —

Why does she refuse to call us delusional? After all...if she really made it
"painfully obvious", then aren't we rightfully delusional? Definition of
Delusion:

a false belief that is maintained in spite of contrary evidence.

Emphasis mine. So...she gave us all this "contrary evidence" so I guess that
does it eh? We're delusional! But no! She won't say it. Maybe she's just trying
to be nice. But based on the later jokes of "feisty militants", I don't really
think she cares about being nice. Maybe she won't call us delusional because
despite all the "contrary evidence" that was used to create "intrigue", in the
end, HHr is not a "false belief"!

So the "contrary evidence" is there but it's not a "false belief" so Emerson's
description is wrong! Could that be what JKR is thinking? Let's take a look at
the next comment.

[More laughter.]

JKR: I will say, that yes, I personally feel - well it's going to be clear once
people have read book six. I mean, that's it. It's done, isn't it? We
know. Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione. I do feel that I have
dropped heavy -

Well, it's going to be clear that all that Ron/Hermione bickering tension was
not by accident! It was leading up to hbp!

"that's it. It's done" = She got that part of the "intrigue" off her hands! That
doesn't mean it's done for book seven!

We Know! We now (at this moment) know that's it's Ron and Hermione. But
permanently or temporarily? She ain't said nothin about that has she?

Am I building a case here of what?

[All crack up]

JKR: - hints. ANVIL-sized, actually, hints, prior to this point. I certainly
think even if subtle clues hadn't been picked up by the end of 'Azkaban'
that by the time we hit Krum in Goblet...

Yeah as I said before, I concede that she dropped ANVIL-sized hints (talking
now about Ron/Hermione, not Harry/Ginny). Yes she dropped ANVIL-sized hints that
the hbp-phenomenon would happen. But that didn't stop her from dropping some
subtle Harry/Hermione hints along the way did it? Namely in ootp...

Should we be called delusional for ignoring the ANVILS? no! because "ANVILS"
doesn't mean Harmony is a "false belief" for book 7! "ANVILS" foreshadowed hbp,
ootp forshadowed book 7!

*snip*

I want to make it clear that delusional is your word and not mine! [Much
laughter.]

Because Harmony is not a "false belief"!

*snip*

JKR: Well I think anyone who is still shipping Harry/Hermione after this book
-

after this book"= Book 7. Anyone who is still shipping Harry/Hermione for
book 7-...

ES: [whispered] Delusional!

JKR: Uh - no! But they need to go back and reread, I think.

Anyone who is still shipping Harry/Hermione for book 7- needs to go back and
reread=got alot of work to do. Those of us who are still going strong for book 7
(after this book) have to reread. Remember, JKR likes shipper-talk. She wants us
to do the work. How do we do the work? by rereading!

I mean, Mellisa is talking about laying things on tables and JKR is suggesting
that we reread if we're the tough shippers who are still shipping Harmony for
book 7. I think it's a hint to do the work and find out for ourselves if it's
over or not!

ES: Thank you.

JKR: Yeah.

MA: That is going to -

JKR: Will it make your lives slightly easier?

JKR completely MISLED Emerson and Mellisa. Instead of laying it on the table
for real and saying "it's over" she told us to "reread" and now Emerson and
Mellisa think their lives are so much easier.... ahahahaha... !

Mellisa wants her to lay it on the table and she could have done so easily then
and there, but she instead does the typical evasive JKR thing.

Her message to us is "reread" instead of "Harmony is over". I've reread already
JKR, and I still think there's as strong of a foundation as ever for Harmony in
the end! Please make it happen!

---------------------------------------------end of highlights----------------------

I think that's quite enough, though there's lots and lots more including an
explanation that when JKR called Ginny the ideal girl for Harry, she only meant
that Ginny was like Hermione, whom Harry's destined for.

Five pages of arguing follows in which some people try to explain why this
analysis is problematic and others rally around the Harmonian flag. Happy New
Year, everyone. May it be full of mind-boggling wank!

Who knew Jo is so cold and calculating when it comes to who snogs who?

When book 7 arrives, I'm sure reading their responses will be the highlight of my year.

I like how Arm Wild picked apart the interview, I wanna play!

(Emphasis mine)

If JKR hits us with HHr as her final ultimate romance, after hbp,
it would definately seem "crafty and involved". It would definately seem
"clandestine". It would definately be "underhand". This is romantic intrigue! JKR could be telling us that hbp was part of her "intrigue", setting us up for HHr!

Okay, so JKR is involved in a wicky game of ultimate, and got in trouble for repeatedly throwing the frisbee at the Harmonians. That she was hitting wasn't the problem, but that she was using an illegal double-meat underhand pass is what got her in hot water.

The ref told her to not pick on the short-bus kids, and JKR resolved to become a sneakier, perhaps more romantic player.

Poor JKR. She's sadly underestimated the crazy when it comes to the Harmonian end of the H/Hr fandom. Apparently she was supposed to say "now we know it's Ron and Hermione, NOT Harry and Hermione who will never, ever fancy each other, snog, shag, pine for one another romantically, go for a hippogryph ride, or share toast again, forever and ever, AMEN."

And even then, they'd probably find a loophole.

::shakes head, sadly::

If JKR hits us with HHr as her final ultimate romance, after hbp,
it would definately seem "crafty and involved". It would definately seem
"clandestine". It would definately be "underhand".

It would be even more crafty and underhanded to say Harry Potter is a seven-book series, and then turn around and just end the series now, at six. Boy howdy, nobody would see that coming!

If Harmonians can cling to their fantasies, so can I...

Why did they take it so personally? Is it because they identified with Hermione *so strongly* that they think they are her, and want to "get with" Harry because they have a crush on him? Or what?

Because most people I know who just thought Harry and Hermione were a cute couple were all, "Oh well" but these people are acting like they were just told they'll never have love in their lives, *ever* because H/HR didn't happen.

:-/

Characters I dislike together have gotten together on tv shows, and in book series (like...oh... um... Sweet Valley University) which usually leads to me going, "darn. thought they were cool" and keep reading/watching if the book/tv series has other qualities. (Or, in the case of Sweet Valley, stop reading altogether because there wasn't much else I liked about the books. Granted, they really *were* only about who was snogging who. Please to be noting this was years ago.)

I hate -- hate -- when people use dictionary definitions in a debate. You can't interpret things by the dictionary definition if they mean something else. I kind of doubt Jo got out her pocket Webster's before replying to the delusional comment. Same for the word intrigue. What matters is what the person MEANS, not the EXACT DEFINITION.

So if she had said, "yeah, they're delusional," she would have won because she confirmed that H/Hr wouldn't happen but would also lose by being OmG tEh meeeeeens!! Crazy.

I'm torn between gleefully waiting for Book VII to see what they'll say when Harry discovers Ron and Hermione snogging and getting really sick of this stupidity.

Yes, she is, but what you twits can't figure out is that she's not talking about the "soul mate love" or "true love" or the "purest of all love". She's talking about "normal love",the one most people find in real life.

Why does she refuse to call us delusional?

Because when you're the author of an international sensation, calling a bunch of children, as well as a portion of your adult readership, delusional might not make you look so great. In fact, my first reaction to that interview was that Emerson was being a bitch--not for saying what she did about Harmonians (because everyone is entitled to their smug, wanky little opinions, and frankly, who gives a shit about Emerson or who Hermione winds up snogging, anyway?), but for putting JKR on the spot like that and expecting her to alienate a bunch of her fans. (Of course, if she had known how crazy some of her fans can be, she might have wanted to alienate them, after all...)

I mean, Mellisa is talking about laying things on tables and JKR is suggesting
that we reread if we're the tough shippers who are still shipping Harmony for
book 7. I think it's a hint to do the work and find out for ourselves if it's
over or not!

This has got to be the absolute cutest situation of Totally Not Getting The Point that I've ever seen. Instead of reading it as a sarcastic and mocking suggestion that Harmonians re-read the books and look for the hints JKR knows she dropped for R/Hr, they're interpreting it as her actually wink-wink-nudge-nudge'ing them into looking for MORE H/Hr clues?

That. Is. Adorable.

If JKR hits us with HHr as her final ultimate romance, after hbp,
it would definately seem "crafty and involved". It would definately seem
"clandestine". It would definately be "underhand". This is romantic intrigue!
JKR could be telling us that hbp was part of her "intrigue", setting us up for
HHr!

No no no, they got it all wrong! The intrique clearly points to Draco and Neville.

if she really made it
"painfully obvious", then aren't we rightfully delusional?

Yes, you are delusional and yes it is painful. H/Hr shippers are very painful.

despite all the "contrary evidence" that was used to create "intrigue", in the
end, HHr is not a "false belief"!

All the contray evidence created intrigue proving that Snape and Mrs. Norris were actually lovers...

Her message to us is "reread" instead of "Harmony is over"

I don't even know how to spork that one. It sporks itself...

Oh, goody, it just wouldn't be a New Year celebration without Harmonian wank....*busts out champagne, party hat, and confetti*

Why does she refuse to call us delusional?

Simple. Because she wants your money.

Yeah as I said before, I concede that she dropped ANVIL-sized hints (talking
now about Ron/Hermione, not Harry/Ginny). Yes she dropped ANVIL-sized hints that
the hbp-phenomenon would happen.

Now if only JKR would literally drop ANVILS on the Harmonians' heads, the world would be a better place....

Why does she refuse to call us delusional?

--because delusional has a negative and often inflammatory connotation? (As your fellows have made very clear, Mr/Ms Wild.)
