Brokeback Mountain / Twinkledru wins at coming out
In which TwinkleDru is brave and Jack and Ennis are total pussies. (Oh! Did I say "pussies"? Whoops. I meant "cowards"!)

There are many, many choice pull-quotes from this wankery. But, really, it's the discussion of privilege (make sure you spell that right) that's my favorite part. Or the part about how (semi-recently) "coming out in a red state" is akin to what the boys of BBM went through. Oh! Oh! Or the part where she gets her ass handed to her about calling someone out on their spelling (she does tutor part-time, though. And points to her for apologizing!).

Good stuff here.

[ETA: Original wanky post deleted or flocked. Dang. Maybe the poster regretted submitting herself to the Wank Report?]

I liked Nathan Lane's comment: "You're in the middle of nowhere! Get a ranch with the guy! Stop torturing these two poor women and get a room! What's the problem?"

I think this part of an anonymous comment was hilarious:

so they “want their cake and to eat it too?” tell me, what exactly is the point of a cake? is it something to look at merely? birthday parties at your house must have sucked.

Alright, kids - let's see how many times in one rant we can use the following phrases:

"Straight White Male Privilege"

and

"have their cake and eat it too"

Ready? Set? GO!!!

Even after reading her post, I never did manage to figure out why it's bad to want "straight white male privelege". Or to have your cake and eat it too. ;-)

Or maybe I'm just reading it from the wrong perspective, and she didn't mean it was wrong, just that what the dudes in the movie did was wrong. Or something.

So, who wants cake?

I saw the film two nights ago. I think it, and the story, are absolutely brilliant... I'd like to see it again. But I also agree with what TwinkleDru had to say here:

[T]his is, at its heart, a story of two people who destroyed a lot of lives by wanting to be true to themselves and simultaneously retain their Straight White Male Privilege. I can get behind that as a cautionary tale, but it's not being told or read as a cautionary tale, from what I've seen -- it's being read as a Big Tragic Romance, something beautiful and even admirable.

... but it's not.

And that, I think, is one of the elements that makes this story so powerful. Two selfish, frightened men who are so desperately in love that they do the only thing they think is possible. They cheat. And that, ultimately, was their own downfall.

I found TwinkleDru's post to be rather accurate.

Not directed at anyone in particular, except maybe my last Literary Criticism teacher, but why can't it just be a story about two guys? Not everything needs to be wrapped in a thick layer of Symbolism and Deeper Meaning.

Embrace your shallowness, people, and go see it because Heath Ledger is in it, angsting over and periodically fucking Jake Gylenhaal. Go watch a good story with awesome visuals. Have a whole tub of popcorn while you're at it, and be entertained. It's okay. Really.

Let me see if I got the cake-thing down. It's obviously something about extramarital affairs but er. So if you have cake it means you love someone other than your partner. If you EAT your cake, it means you also screw them.

I feel like being evil and asking, what if your wife bakes and decorates a cake for you? Can you have AND eat it, then? Or what if your wife wants a piece of the cake, as well? Mmm, cake threesome? What if your wife bakes a cake for your kids?

And the Big Question: what the fuck are you supposed to do with your wedding cake?

What a stupid comment that one is only allowed to correct people's grammar or spelling if one is a qualified teacher. Rubbish. I've known qualified teachers who couldn't spell themselves and who would have no business correcting others.

All it requires is being right oneself; and doing it gently and politely and only when really necessary or as a friendly gesture.

I'm pretty sure Jack and Ennis didn't want it both ways. They married because that was what people did and people who didn't got beat to death and dragged by their penis until it pulled off. Odd that they wouldn't be here and queer in 1964.

I got from the trailer that this was not a healhy relationship. That their feelings for one another and inability to admit their gay or even just in love was going to fuck them and their families up big time. Yes they were scared of the homopobia if they came out but that does not make it any less shitty what they did to their wives and kids. "Having your cake and eating it too" is what caused their downfall. It was tragic and romantic becuase the characters made stupid desperate descisions.Romeo and Juliet were stupid and desperate too.

I think there's should be a substantial separation in our understanding of "what Ang Lee says about his film" and "what the film itself shows."

Of course, I also feel this way about books, and in HP fandom that's considered wanky.

Wait what huh "makes her a bad slash fangirl"? For this instance, let me just clarify that I think of slash as gay fan porn - that's how I've come to interpret it. There are lots of arguments for and against that definition, but just for the sake of this comment let's set those aside. I'm pretty sure this film isn't slash (seeing as it has plot and depth and all that good stuff), and in fact going to this film just because you like gay buttsex is going to leave you sorely disappointed.

SPOILER WARNING, SORTA I GUESS?

There is only one sex scene and it's incredibly quick, and not very erotic. It's unlubricated and pretty much sounds and looks painful.

The movie is 130 minutes long, and 129 minutes of that is long, slow drama. But hey, you slashers have fun with that 60 seconds!

Returning to Brokeback Mountain specifically, can it be frightening, even dangerous, to be gay in a hostile climate? Oh, hell yes. As someone who was out in her public school years, hell yes.
Because coming out five years ago (or around that, she's 21 now, according to her info) as a female highschool student in Washington DC is SO the same as coming out as a male ranchhand in the south in early sixties.

Only not at all.

For something really wanky, read this article about how Brokeback is "raping the image of the Marlboro Man."
In "The Marketing of Evil," I show how the Philip Morris Company made marketing history by taking one of the most positive American images of all time – the cowboy – and attaching it to a negative, death-oriented product – cigarettes.

Hit the pause button for a moment so this idea can completely sink in: Cigarette marketers cleverly attached, in the public's mind, two utterly unrelated things: 1) the American cowboy, with all of the powerful feelings that image evokes in us, of independence, self-confidence, wide-open spaces and authentic Americanism, and 2) cigarettes, a stinky, health-destroying waste of money. This legendary advertising campaign targeting men succeeded in transforming market underdog Marlboro (up until then, sold as a women's cigarette with the slogan "Mild as May") into the world's best-selling cigarette.

It was all part of the modern marketing revolution, which meant that, instead of touting a product's actual benefits, marketers instead would psychologically manipulate the public by associating their product with the fulfillment of people's deepest, unconscious needs and desires. (Want to sell liquor? Put a seductive woman in the ad.) Obviously, the marketers could never actually deliver on that promise – but emotional manipulation sure is an effective way to sell a lot of products.

The "Marlboro Man" campaign launched 50 years ago. Today, the powerful cowboy image is being used to sell us on another self-destructive product: homosexual sex and "gay" marriage.
Then click on one bloggers brilliant response.

Who knew that smoking = teh gay? Or that boykissing causes lung cancer? Also, what if Hollywood made a sympathetic movie about incest or pedophilia? Which are both as "evil" as homosexuality, natch.
Do we understand that Hollywood could easily produce a similar movie to "Brokeback Mountain," only this time glorifying an incest relationship, or even an adult-child sexual relationship? Like "Brokeback," it too would serve to desensitize us to the immoral and destructive reality of what we're seeing, while fervently coaxing us into embracing that which we once rightly shunned.

All the filmmakers would need to do is skillfully make viewers experience the actors' powerful emotions of loneliness and emptiness – juxtaposed with feelings of joy and fulfillment when the two "lovers" are together – to bring us to a new level of "understanding" for any forbidden "love." Alongside this, of course, they would necessarily portray those opposed to this unorthodox "love" as Nazis or thugs. Thus, many of us would let go of our "old-fashioned" biblical ideas of morality in light of what seems like the more imminent and undeniable reality of human love in all its diverse forms.
Good Godwin.
