Trolls, Sockpuppets and Board Nazis...
Oh, the joys of imdb wank!

The other day I noticed a little trollish exercise started by one Herman Applebottom:

For those without imdb accounts, he asks:
What's the name of the old guy in Star Wars? He walks around with that cane with
the mosquito in it and created and park.

It seemed to fizzle out, and now it's back with a vengeance.

Others come in and ask if he's confusing Jurassic Park and Star Wars.
He is sure he isn't:
That doesn't ring a bell. I remember them going into a crazy bar at one point and cutting off a dude's arm, and he dies out in the jungle by those little creatures that spit.

CalamityJean calls troll! His sock-puppet, Rupert Goolosh comes and joins in the fun. Mere seconds later, Herman posts with a a "confession":
Thanks, Calamity. I was doing a research paper for my class as to Internet etiquette and abuse and you have helped me prove an important point. And it only took a couple of hours. This is interesting indeed.

As everyone knows that an "Internet troll" or "Forum Troll" is a person who posts outrageous message to bait people to answer.

I hope you don't mind that I quote your reply in my paper.

Thanks to everyone else that helped.

There's to-ing and fro-ing about sock-puppets:
Rupert...or is it Herman? I tell you what the people on this board are pretty clever. All these similarities are mind blowing. I mean come on this is just retarded. Just because Herman has his arm lodged up my butt and is controlling what I type is that so wrong? Oops i better not joke about that stuff or the Scooby Squad might take me seriously and think that they've cracked the case.

Ohhh, look! Now the twins are arguing with CalamityJean about an abusive pm one of them sent to her...will it ever stop?

The 'I was only doing research' excuse for trolling. Surely there's a law about that? If not, there should be!

Not yet. But one could concieveably come up with good penalties for that, such as being forced to give every member of the forum the results of your research, which must total at least 200 8.5"x11" pages with a 12 point font, double spaced, and 1" margins all the way around. At the troll's own expense.

But it's your law. [info]jurisimprudence is right there.

The amusing thing about that excuse is that I actually considered using a messageboard as a way of getting opinions on something I was researching for uni. I was told that the main message would need to included a precise account of what I was researching, what it was for, and where it would be submitted. Then I would need to get permission from each individual I wanted to quote. If I didn't, I'd fail for plagiarism.

"I was trolling for research."

Is that like, "I was only looking at the underage pr0n for research" excuse? Who over the age of 11 believes that?

It's right up there with the ones who don't start out trolling, but lay on the flameage when they don't get the response they want, THEN claim that they were trolling all along.

um-- alrighty, then. Those boards are teh crazy. I try to avoid them. I've seen "research trolls" show up on forums and in yahoo groups. I think they should be caught, tagged with a radio transmitter than released back into the wilds of the net.

God, no shit. Every time the IMDB message boards manage to tempt me back in, I lose a few more IQ points before I manage to escape. It's a festering swamp of Teh St00pid.

I suppose if they were creative enough to think of an original excuse, then they'd be able to come up with something better to do than trolling in the first place.

Do people seriously have nothing better to do? Oh yeah right a research paper. Im sure thats what collage professers are interested in, baiting people on the internet. Uh huh. *rolls eyes*

When people like that just come right out and admit that they were freaking bored and decided to be an asshat, I'll be in a better mood to forgive the crap they cause but until then....

Actually, when I was a lad, I would often have that exact scenario when playing with my action figures: my Star Wars characters would land on dinosaur planets. Even today, the kid in me is imagining what it might be like to throw clone troopers onto Skull Island, heehee!
