"Will & Grace" Wank
Over on willandgrace, cyrus_of_persia has written a rant about how he feels "Will & Grace" is doing a disservice to gay men and to women in general, due to Jack being an effeminate gay male and Grace being "dainty"/"effeminate". The rant itself is very wanky (basically asserting that everybody who sees the portrayal of a stereotype of a gay person or a woman automatically thinks all people within that group behave that way), and demonstrates either a woeful lack of knowledge about the show (since when is Grace "dainty"?) or a gross misinterpretation of what it's trying to convey. His argument is very poorly-constructed, citing only one quote from the show to back his claims up. He also almost completely ignores the characters of Will (who's a gay man but doesn't act exceedingly effeminate) and Karen (who's quite a strong female character). Apparently, he also thinks his sexuality is relevant to the argument at hand, stating in the opening sentences of his post that he's bisexual.

Not surprisingly, members of the community think he's full of crap, and proceed to lay it on thick. However, cyrus_of_persia will not be swayed!!!

rah62 starts off an argument with the OP when he says: It's *entertainment*. Feel free to hit the "off" button if you don't like it. cyrus_of_persia, however, completely ignores the point rah62 is trying to make, and for whatever reason invokes Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. This thread soon degenerates into a short round of bickering in which cyrus_of_persia tries to make himself look like some champion of rights because he critically (over-)analyzes TV shows. Bonus oh-so-clevrsmrat insult: "I feel sorry for your friends."

kuriin tells cyrus to get laid and a life. He apparently does not know how to respond to this. WOE.

Later on down in the comments, yousexxehthang points out that the OP's argument makes it seem like he's seen very little of the show. Cyrus demands how this seems to, and ignores all the other points yousexxehthang tries to make, suddenly making the proclamation that "Sometimes what is popular isn't always right; sometimes what is right isn't always popular." with absolutely no rhyme or reason behind it.

cyrus_of_persia then screams of ZOMGOPPRESSION when the_q_tip accuses him of mentioning his sexuality as an attempt to gain sympathy.

And finally, in the wankiest proclamation yet, cyrus_of_persia responds to virtualsarcasm telling him that he fails to sound smart in his argument by... ... saying he's standing up for womens' rights. No, I don't get it either.

Like a good wanka, I am saving as much of this wank I can in the case of bahleetion. Fortunately, cyrus_of_persia seems determined to bicker with nearly every commenter, so I don't see bahleetion forthcoming any time soon.

You know? Jack and Karen would love this wank.

Karen: *to cirus_of_persia* Oh honey. You really have no idea, do you. Here, have a chill-out pill. Or maybe a prozac.

And Jack:

Jack: ... I can make people gay?! I'm like Jesus! But gayer!

And, for the record, the silogisms cyrus_of_persia is using are all wrong. With cold medicine kicking in I can't really remember how it should go but I think it should go like these:

To prove her point:

Gay man are flamboyant.
Jack is a gay man.
Thus, Jack is flamboyant.

But in Will&Grace it'd be:

Only some gay men are flamboyant.
Jack is a flamboyant gay man.
Thus, only some gay men are flamboyant

OR

Some gay men are flamboyant.
Will is a gay man but he's not flamboyant.
So not all gay men are flamboyant.

thaaank you for pointing out his flawed syllogisms. that's exactly what I was going to comment on. although, I think that the point she was trying to make would be more like this:

Jack is flamboyant.
Jack is a gay man.
Therefore, all gay men are flamboyant.

I couldn't get through reading all the comments, but I can't understand why everyone is so venemously angry at the OP.

(...)

But spending some time in a Communication research class has shown me how prevalent stereotypes truly ARE in TV.

OooOooooOOOooh!! *bows to [info]bunnigurl, who went to skool*

From same user, different reply:

It *is* stupid for people to rely on TV shows for an accurate portrayl of people. But if that's all you've got, the TV is all you know.

Once again, it's great that we can decipher all of this, but there are other's who can't/don't. We just have to be aware of it. I don't think Will and Grace is negligent or is trying to perpetuate these stereotypes... they're just trying to be funny. But it's there no matter how inoccuous we might think it is.

IMO, political correct-ness is bound to end society as we know it. Ever read 1984?

To be fair, there's a difference between an honest desire not to offend people and the kind of thing that's called "political correctness" nowadays.

yousexxehthang: But I'm not going to argue with you, clearly you're one of those people who brand themselves as dissidents who exist to shed light upon the people with no minds who follow popular beliefs.

cyrus_of_persia: Popular belief? Wasn't it "popular" to own slaves in the 18th and 19th century?

And cyrus_of_persia loses.

You know, if W&G has NO flamboyant gay men, people would be bitching about that too.

This wank reminded me of the time when my aunt invited her flamboyant gay male friend to Thanksgiving dinner and he watched Friends and Will&Grace with my sister. During one part of Will&Grace he turns to her and says, "He's soooo gay, isn't he? Tee hee!"

This is going to sound mean, but this brings up a RL wank situation where I had to mediate a fight between my best friend's roomate and his ex over who got to keep the GI Joe collection.

Who cares? Will and Grace is fucking funny, if only because of Karen.

I agree. I stopped watched the show after it jumped the shark in the worst way in season 5, but Karen was one of the funniest things about the show. (As I understand it, she's pretty emo now... the horror!) The willandgrace comm is usually full of people posting icons and random Karen quotes; this is the first wank I've seen out of it, besides a bite-sized one when they did the first live episode where someone asserted s/h/it was a Will/Grace 'shipper. (In spite of the fact that, y'know, Will's gay.) They mentioned that they held onto it because it was all they had left after being disappointed by Harry/Hermione. I can try and find the link if you want to see...

The odd thing being that even if Will and Grace does have problems with its portrayals, I've never found either Jack or Will to be characterized only by that homosexuality. Does their sexuality heavily impact their lives? Sure, but that's natural. Your sexuality is part of who you are, and neither Jack or Willa are alone in this - both female characters are given equally dramatic focus in their *heterosexual* relationships.

Jack is the more stereotyped of the two, I agree, but I always thought it was meant to parody to an exaggerated degree the very stereotype it's portraying. Will, on the other hand, I've never thought of as "the other gay character" on the show. He's always just been characterized as, well...Will.

Wow. This is a situation where I'd agree with the community if I hadn't found something like this first. So it's a-okay to demean yourself as long as you're part of the group that's being demeaned? WTF kind of logic is that?

Oh wait, cyrus said something even more stupid than that. Carry on.

I hate that show, and Queer Eye, because I'm really anal (no pun intended) about GLBT characterizations, and queer people playing second fiddle to straights instead of their being equal.

But then again- I'm a fan of a certain gay male anime character who tried to kill all of humanity and is psycho as hell, and my three Rl gay inspirations are William S. Burroughs, Mishima Yukio, and Rob Halford. So I have no room to talk about bad gay stereotypes. >D
