Hm, I didn't think it was Gail and Lea but Gail and some other person on this Lea's journal....

And I love it when Lea paraphrases Jon Stewart. That ep. of the Daily Show was brilliant.

A bit of background here

I read part of the drama last night, but I was feeling sleepy, well-fed and a bit cold. So, as far as I can remember...

Lea Hernandez has been angry because she hasn't been getting the credit for revealing how abusive Tokyopop's contracts are. Or so it seems. So, she decides to quit comics when someone reveals that Frank Miller asked for an "ass shot" of Vicky Vale in a script "All Star Batman and Robin". She claims that she's had it with an industry that is sexist and that tolerates sexual abuse, so she's quitting.

Only that she's not quitting comics. She later clarifies that she's quitting the "business of comics". But, of course, she will be working in her own work, available soon! It's good that she never liked the comic business anyway, although she's been on it for years.

I don't know when or how Gail Simone walks in. But given that she writes "Birds of Prey", starring three scantly-claded-but-very- strong heroines, I can understand why she might take an issue with her statements, if she did.

II might agree with Lea's points had it not been for the tiny detail that she forgot that there are titles without gratituous cheesecake that feature strong female characters. I can immediately think of "Fables", "Astro City" and of almost everything that Alan Moore created even if someone else has continued it (like "Top Ten"), but there must be more.

There are plenty of things I can think of, personally. One of my favourite passtimes for a while was watching Lea and Lisa (Jonte) arguing with people back on the V. We used to refer to them as Patty and Selma.

I'm pretty sure most of the comics she refers to are in the quote from whomever it was that started off her rant - thus, she wasn't the one directly mentioning them. She merely didn't go on to mention the wide variety of comics with strong female characters that aren't full of crotch.

As a man, I have no problem with a troupe of male strippers.

I also have no problem with boobies, even if I don't get off on it: yes, it's excessive, but it's better than going out of one's way to reduce any sort of sexuality in comics.

It isn't just women. No, the guys aren't scantily clad, but they're pretty damn hot and there's plenty of fanservice concerning them- especially Nightwing, especially his fine fine arse.

Correct. "Fanservice" is a pretty sexist concept because it assumes the fans are people who want to see underwear or other softcore wannabe shots.

This is funny. Just before I came over here and saw this wank, I was reading Gail's (supportive) comments on Ronee Garcia's interview with Lea, Colleen Doran, and someone else (about sexual harrassment in the comics industry).
