BRPS wank
[info]naiveprophet: Tragic past =/= Mary Sue! Child abuse and car accidents and bad childhoods happen all the time in real life! (She later implies she may have made up the now-edited-out story about her nephew)

[info]therikkster: Telling stories about family members on the internet is bad, mkay?

iwanttobeasleep: Just because it happens doesn't mean it's good and some jumping to conclusions that [info]naiveprophet insinuated that gay people are bad parents.

First of all, where did you get your icon? I just watched Teen Girl Squad for the first time ever and I have fallen in love.
Also, I'm with naiveprophet on this one. The internet is anonymous and if you would like to tell someone about yourself, that's fine. I don't find that story of hers rude.

I'm with TheRikkster, even if the story is true she still has no right to tell it because it's not her story.

I have to ask how would her nephew feel if he found out his aunt was relating his childhood trauma to complete strangers on the net in an attempt to justify wangsty Mary Sue characters?

Anyone have a screenshot or at least a paraphrasing of what she said about her nephew?

It was a long tale of the trauma her nephew had suffered, including, but not limited to sexual abuse, and forgetting how to read, with quite a bit of detail. To justify her mary-sue character's backstory.

Because, personally, I think my characters are wonderful, well developed, and interesting.

Heh. Ok. Now point me to someone who doesn't.

Me!

I have a couple of OCs that I think are Mary-Sues, or at least are heavily underdeveloped. I say this and people tell me to STFU (in more words and without the swearing), no they aren't.

It comes down to one thing- if you're writing professionally and you're successful at it, you obviously have something going for you that redeems the flaws that you may have as a writer.
Anne Rice. Mercedes Lackey. Piers Anthony.

Not to mention, what if the nephew wants to use his past in an RPG, and he's told "it's been done"?

Political correctness can be good, but here, therikkster is just blowing things way out of proportion. Wank? All I see here is on TheRikkster's hands.

I see nothing wrong about the mentioning of that "nephew". Who's that? Where is the face? His name? He'd not even be able to tell it's his aunt who posted it. He'd not notice it's him. And chances are, he's not even around. How many abused people have aunts? A WHOLE lot.

And to be honest. If that posting shocks you, please don't enter germany and if you do, avoid history at all costs. Historical discussions will kill you by your fuming outrageousness. Especially if it concerns Berlin in 1945. You'll find a lot of "rape" in connection to "mother", "grandmother" and "aunt". Or "sister".
Not to mention stuff in connection to "Auschwitz". Yeah, all the "abuse of relatives" going on in my country. Alert the internet police!

Really. What naiveprophet did was nothing exceptionally bad, and her basic point seems pretty correct to me. Tragic past DOES -NOT- equal Mary sue. Period.

Huh. I'm actually with therikkster on this one: using your nephew's trauma as an excuse to write your own Mary Sue and then telling people about it online is just...wrong. You're not anonymous online, and anyone who really believes otherwise is deluding themselves.

It's not her story to share. It's not her story to share around, get sympathy votes and use as a justification for her character. It's his story. And if she made it up -- that's just...urgh. Disrespectful.

I'm going to crawl back to my rock of "holy shit I hate humanity" right now.

I think therikkster is being ridiculous. Using your nephew's trauma to justify your Mary Sue is classless, I'll agree with that. But the idea that you need a person's permission to use their story as inspiration in your writing? Bitch, please.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it only a Sue trait if they go all "WOE IS ME!" and use it to gain pity?
