A bit of GAFF mini-wank over Tristan & Isolde
Doe starts a thread in Godawful Movies wondering whether Tristian and Isolde is going to suck, based purely on the music used during the preview.

Some people have better reactions than others, such as Mvctar Avrelivs's fit over replacing Wagner with Evanescence. Raven and Writing Desk gets historically philosophical by asking whether angsty pseudo-goth is better than anti-Semetic, long dead composers.

But that's not the real wank.

Anais idly relates a tale of high schoolers who had the gall not to be familiar with Romeo and Juliet.

Then the wank ensues.
Everyone's favorite Miss Kitten defends the rights of the unlettered masses. Must be really nice to be so smart that you understand many wonderful literary references, but don't you think that's fairly condescending given that you don't know everything about everything?

...Or do you?

OR DOES SHE?! DUHN DUHN DUNNNN! Well maybe she doesn't, but it's Tabari for the save! Don't be deliberately plebeian, it doesn't suit you and is more artificial than even you usually are. Oh snap!

'Plebian' is so not hot.

Tripathy gives an assist to the plebians! This is later nullified by an illegal use of a Canadian. But not before washu-hime chips in her (unasked for) two cents.

It just Goes on.

And on.

Ad nauseum

Until Doe tries to wrench the thread back on topic. It's slowed down for now.

Ordinarily I'd be indignant as hell that they were going to replace Wagner with Evanescence, but I really don't think it matters. Yeah, Wagner wrote an opera by the same name, but it's not like Tristan and Isolde is Wagner's own story.

I'm probably missing the point here, but whether or not a person 'takes' "Romeo and Juliet" at school strikes me as irrelevant to whether they know it or not. I learned a great deal more outside school than I ever did *in* it; don't people just *read* any more? Missing cultural references is not a question of whether one has been taught a thing so much as a question of whether or not one is awake; not knowing R&J is less to do with inadequate education than with can't-be-assedness. Now, if someone despises Shakespeare and doesn't want anything to do with him or his works that's cool with me; I feel it's their loss, but then there are areas of popular culture (like anime for example) which are a closed book to me. I'm missing something superb but my brain just doesn't work that way, so I can quite get to why a person wouldn't relate to the plays. What I'm saying, however, is that we are responsible for our own cultural choices and that most of us are working, or have worked, in opposition to an unsympathetic education system, so blaming 'school' for gaps in our knowledge that we could actually have filled ourselves just doesn't wash. Surely it's better simply to say that we're really not interested in a thing and to leave it at that?

the_android - LJ user but your system doesn't recognise me. Weep.

First of all, I'd put Romeo and Juliet at the level of Basic Cultural Awareness. Kind of like knowing that Darth Vader is a bad, bad, man. And while there are probably people raised within Western culture who don't know these things (my parents, up until a couple of years ago, for instance), it is fair to say that they should know, and have no right to complain when other people assume that they do.

Describing knowing the ending of Romeo and Juliet as 'understanding wonderful literary references' is like describing knowing that tomatoes don't grow on trees as 'being some kind of plant scientist'.

Nothing's better than watching people with absolutely no knowledge of decent literature other than having watched A Muppet Christmas Carol arguing about Shakespeare. I'm all for them having an opinion, but sometimes I think postmodernism really owes a lot to society.

Come ON, teens know how Romeo and Juliet ends! I'm with the 'it's basic popular culture knowledge' group. Hello, I have NEVER seen an episode of any Star Trek series ever and *I* can name characters and crap like that. And you don't need to read Frankenstein to know that there's a doctor who creates a man out of dead bodies and bad things happen. It's basic knowledge.

Although comparing Star Trek and Shakespeare is an insult. Sorry Bill.

The movie is certainly going to suck, but it is all for the better then that they don't use Wagner's music. Not to mention that nothing goddamn *happens* in his version of Tristan, unless you like lots of "erotic screaming". I made it through one Tristan in the house, so I am set for life.

Well, I happen to agree that it'll suck, but not because it's in any way related to Wagner, but rather the fact that it's a teen chickflick and those movies are universially sucktastic.

But yea, whatever.

The really funny part about all that soundtrack fuss is that trailers NEVER have the actual movie soundtrack on them (or at least rarely). Ever notice how often you watch a trailer and think, "Hey, I know that music." That's because the trailers are designed and released long before the movies are scored, so there are no soundtracks to put on them. So all this crap about them using Evanescence in the film is probably dead wrong. Though God knows I'd rather have angsty Goth than that blowhard Wagner. Besides, if they use Wagner's Tristan I won't be able to get Excalibur out of my head the whole time.

If by "wonderful literary references" you mean "references that so utterly pervade the culture that it requires an act of will to remain oblivious to them," then, sure!

It is a tiny difference between knowing every Shakespear play by heart and knowing that Romeo and Juliet die. Or do you feel discriminated as not being an expert about the history of the shipbuilding industry because you don't know that the Titanic sank?!

And, oh, the movie song...

The first thing the T&I preview made me think was, "Evanescence? Is this whole movie going to be set to pop music like A Knight's Tale?"

The second thing I thought was, "Why is Rufus Sewell always the bad guy?" Seriously, why?

Also, I read T&I in high school and for the life of me cannot remember who bites it at the end or if they both do. Either way, I hope death will be set to some quality pop wailing.

And the only thing I want from that movie is for someone to finally - FINALLY - write some Tristan/Mark porn.

...Wagner was patroned by Ludwig II.

He automatically wins. Cause, I mean, Ludwig II. All hail the insane, gay, castle-building king of Bavaria!

Is there a law that says anyone who uses "plebe" as an insult in a non-satirical fasihon automatically loses?
