"Charlotte Bronte would be disappointed"
It all begins innocently enough when [info]nostalgia_lj posts a short Dr. Who fic based on a dream in her journal--originally friends-locked, but unlocked after recent events. All goes fairly well until [info]spiralsheep comes along and is moved to give concrit, and [info]thedorkygirl, one of the fic's original betas, is moved to respond.

As often happens when two editors meet upon the field of grammar at dawn, wanky hijinks ensue.

After a lengthy debate over such earth-shaking matters as proper capitalization, antecedents, and whether or not "air of determination" is properly a cliché, during which the two parties very politely and formally attempt to verbally stab each other ("Editors and academics don't generally base their linguistic theories on google hits!" "I'm certain that editors and academics do, however, try to back up their statements with some sort of fact/actual detail instead of making sweeping statements."), spiralsheep starts to sigh, and express how bored she is. A lot. Still, the average viewer looking upon this might get the impression these people weren't wild about each other, but everything was reasonably polite and nothing to call wank over, right?

Oh come on. You knew it couldn't possibly be that easy.

spiralsheep decides to publicly comment on the matter in her own journal:

I gave a constructively critical comment to a friend on her latest fan fiction and her batshit insane, 17 year old, American, beta-reader (that's wannabe editor for those of you who don't speak fanfic) has now spent 13 comments trying to convert me to her bad English. Sadly her English is so bad that she doesn't even understand the polite corrections with which I kindly, but stupidly, provided her. One of her mutual lj friends has now turned up and joined in while claiming to be a random passer by. ::headdesk::

The moral of this story: no good deed ever goes unpunished redux.

And then continues on in the comments:

I thought the exchanges were variously interesting, witty, laughable, and batshit insane. This evening (my local time) has given me a better understanding of several aspects of fandom which tend to puzzle me. It also fitted in with my general experience of the day. If you check the post preceeding this one you'll see that I talk tolerantly, possibly even lovingly, of the eccentricity and barkingness of my neighbours. I find people, of all types, endlessly fascinating and your friend is no exception. I can only hope that people allow me the same leeway when I'm taking my turn at being batshit.

thedorkygirl has her own response to that:

"I can only hope that people allow me the same leeway when I'm taking my turn at being batshit."

Dude, I already have.

The pretention is so stiffling with these people.

And this is FANFICTION, people. Please, it's not the Great (insert country here)-ian novel; don't wank as if you're Anne Rice with lit cred.

Is the whole "I'm really bored by this conversation and so am expressing it in emotes" thing an official corollary to the "I'm replying to every comment because I don't care" thing, or are they separate wanky behaviors?

"If the book is alive then it needs another clue to that. If the book isn't alive then "an air of determination" is a meaningless cliché because books don't have airs."

Perhaps I'm batshit to think "personification, please" when I read that.

Unless the technique became meaningless, therefore unworthy of spiralsheep to consider.

You know, it baffles me how Doctor Who, which is one of the wankiest fandoms I have ever stumbled across, only seems to end up on f_w for only peripherally related things, like grammer and racism. Where's all the "it isn't canon" and "the Doctor is half-human" and Nine/Rose shippers vs Ten/Rose shippers vs "The Doctor is asexual" types?

Still, poor Nostalgia. It was a good fic, it doesn't need this rubbish associated with it.

Bad Good English v. Good Bad English

Who will win?

This would make the best old west fighting game ever. But only if Bill & Ted narrate.

See, I should check fandom_wank lots, and not depend on the LJ feed to get me here. All the good comments have already been made! Unless everything fun happened after I went to bed, as it often does. *sulks*

In all fairness, Charlotte Bronte was disappointed a lot.

...I'm just amazed that Nostalgia_lj managed to stay out of the wankfest. Props to her for being able to keep her cool.

Um. Why is this page so incredibly wide? Side-scrolling to read comments is ANNOYING.

this tasty morsel from the little Denzel-is-racist-becuz-he-won't-kiss-white-girls-onscreenOMG side trip:

it shouldnt make it worse that its a white women they are being left for. it should hurt regarless. thats really stupid rationale.

OMGWHYYYYY CAN"T PEEPLE CNTROL WHAT THEY FEEL??? HOW CUM NOBUDY REALIZAS MY WAY IS BEST??? (EVENIF THEY DUN NO MEEEE??) IF I RANTH WORLD EVERYTHING WULD BE PREFECT!!!

I love it when wankers start dictating to the world what everyone's emotional reaction to a situation "should" be, as if you could just hand your hypothalamus a rule book on how emotions are to be used. And of course they would be the only people expert enough to write that rule book, because they're the only ones who know exactly what reactions the world's population should have to any given situation. That always tickles me.

Is there a [info]jurisimprudence law covering this wank phenomenon? It's widespread enough!
