Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye
On the Morrissey-solo board, someone posts the cover for Moz's forthcoming album, Ringleader of the Tormentors.

As my spouse put it, "One thumbnail image, 105 comments."

The general response is mixed, but there's some good stuff. For example:

Crikey. Who the FUCK let this go out the door? Another BAD ORDINARY CHEAP SHITE FONT slathered in two minutes on a CRAP PHOTO! Anyone on this fuckin board could do better in 15 minutes with the free software they got with their scanner.
DISGRACEFUL....
And this from a man who designed some of the most iconic sleeves during TWO decades! What the Fuck happened to his taste?
And:
The cover is THE BEST!

The cover art- when presented with the title of the album- is ironic, clever, intriguiging, and dramatic.

What could the concept be? Conflict, victimization, and survival are themes that come to mind.

What would you say if Morrissey actually made it to the Grammys or some other award show? Would we even want that to happen in the first place?

Love always,
Ken Stavitzke
And:
Regardless of what one thinks of the actual photo (personally I reckon it looks fine, much better than YATQ) I think there is a kind of ironic tie-in to the title.

Ringleader of the Tormenters kinda implies a sort of simmering ultra violence. And yet what do you get when when you look at the cover?

A kind of beatific serenity, Moz instrument in hand about to make beautiful music.

I think it ties in perfectly with Moz's whole outlook on art. I've always believed he's gravitated to art that is both violent and yet poetic and fragile.

Think of "the Queen is Dead" where Moz sings about some reasonably violent and revolutionary ideas to amped up music and yet........there's great poetry in that song.

Maybe I'm extrapilating the point out a little but that's what I see in the album cover. A sense of violence in the title combined with an image of beatific serenity.

Oh Moz you're such a ironic wag!

Really it's small and cute, as wanks go, but hey, it's Morrissey wank. That has to count for something.

Looks like just about any other Morrissey/The Smiths album cover to me.

I suppose it's not cool anymore to only give a shit about the actual music sammiched between the art.

Wow. Morrissey wank. Over an album cover.

Just... wow.

Can I wank over how New Order's newest album says 'No' and it's a deep and metaphorical statement about the restraints society puts on itself? Can I? Can I?

The best Morrissey-Solo wank ever was when someone was trying to prove that MORRISSEY IS A HETEROSEXUAL DAMMNIT, by quoting "William, It Was Really Nothing."

w00t. Tickets for where I wanna see him go on sale today!

And unless I go to bed soon, I won't be up in time to book. Ah, stuff it. *plans all nighter writing Morrissey songfics starring Snape&Dumbledore*

...er, slightly more on topic, is it just me, or is Morrissey not holding the violin properly? I get the feeling my teacher would've smacked him for that wrist position. but it's been years.

Also, I'm surprised there wasn't wank about the title. What a flipping mouthful. BUT I WILL STILL BE BUYING IT AND I WILL STILL GO SWOONY WHEN I SEE HIM BECAUSE MORRISSEY IS CLEARLY MY SPIRITUAL MOTHER.

Ahem.

It looks right to me. His wrist is straight, not bent, it's just that he's angled forward, and it makes it look wonky.

Funny, last year someone posted cover and insert art from the forthcoming Decemberists album and everyone started freaking out about spoilers. I guess music-fan wank varies depending on the band.

He is getting quite weird isn't he?

Are we talking about the same Morrissey? Morrissey, weird? Never!

This is the man who has made an artform of the off-centre! He's not *getting* weird.

I can't even tell if those song-titles listed in the comments are real or fake. Those song-titles are not normal. Unless you are Morrissey.
