Wank begets more wank.
This is only a potential wank in its early stages of progress, but I wanted to make a record of it as early as possible, because it's kinda amusing to see these "live," at the very moment they happen:

Remember that Mary Sue wank?

Some of you might've noticed in some of the replies that it made it onto LJ Drama as well.

Well, it turns out that the person who did the writeup was DL aka Quasidan, who is well known to always make comments in such a manner as to rile up the readers, regardless of whether he actually honestly believes what he's saying or not. So naturally, his summary of the story is chock full of digs at the whole concept of fanfiction writing in general.

The thing to keep an eye out for here is the replies, as people have started to take the obvious bait and begin politely attempting to edumajacate DL and change his mind. Watch as other people come in to bait them some more by writing deliberately inflammatory statements such as: "Even good fanfic is fucking stupid. People should come up with their own material instead of plagiarizing someone famous." With material like this, it's only a matter of time before someone's temper blows.

Like I said at the beginning, this hasn't reached wanktastic levels yet, but hey, the original LJ Drama post is only a day old - let's give it a break, shall we? During the wait, I recommend perusing the replies from some of LJ Drama's past entries - there is much, MUCH wank to be found there, and the melodrama and stupidity shown by some folks is sometimes even bigger than what the original submission was. Feel free to share your favorites in the replies!

Even better...

::twitch:: This ... thing ... I looked at Quasidan's userinfo, because that name was familiar. I remember seeing it in other communities.

And this thing has the gall to call fanfic writers "losers" and it has a hideous little blinkie default icon? How teenyboppery.

But I like that icon. Care Bears bring out so much nostalgia for me. ;_;

Anyway, guys... seriously. Like I said in the original post, I wouldn't take anything he says to heart, especially when he lists some of his own interests as being "anti-quasidan" and "quasidan_is_a_fag." If that ain't the mark of someone who really doesn't take any of this shit seriously, I don't know what is.

Certain posters who're obviously going out of their way to kiss the asses of the LJ Drama admins in their replies to all the different submissions are an entirely different story, though. Those amuse me to no end - sometimes I've posted my own opinion of something there myself, and while sometimes I agree with the LJ Drama folk, there are also times I disagree with their behavior. Simply put, those who act as if the admins of the site are somehow infallible and above scrutiny are as much of a laugh riot as the people that wind up there.

Er... they have chanslash listed as an interest.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't chanslash a form of fan fiction? A rather pervy form, but a form none-the-less? Because if it's not, I have to go flame the hpchanslash list now. They're not writing real fan fiction!

Not that the rest of the interests seem serious. But still.

Oh, that's what we anime/game fans know as shotacon (or shota for short), which is short for shoutarou(sp?) complex. (Which is basically like the male version of the Lolita complex, often known amongst the Japanese fans [and their Western counterparts] as lolicon. Er, as you notice, the Japanese fans [and again, their Western counterparts] have this [sometimes obnoxious] habit of abbreviating their terminology in a "cute" manner.)

Anyway, while we're in this discussion, can anyone explain to me why and/or how it wound up being called "chanslash?" I'm afraid I'm a bit unfamiliar with "Western" terminology at times.

Re: ::reads::

I think it actually comes from the anime terms, actually, with -chan being the suffix for children. Chanslash and Shotacon tend to be used interchangably in a lot of circles.

At least, that's the only thing I can come up with.

Well, the way *I've* heard it used before was in regards to two little girls. (ie, -chan slash). Mostly I've heard it in reference to Tomoyo and Sakura, things like that.

Never heard it used for boys before.

To me, the word slash indicates 'fan fiction'. Just saying 'chan' (or 'shota') would indicate a wider range, but including 'slash' rather points to fan fiction.

Damn, I saw this last night and was too lazy tired to link it. What cracks me up is the fact that their community has pretty much the same function as the MSR, even though they try to deny it.

And why does everyone have to have the last name "Sheets"?

I didn't read that remark as denying the charges, but rather as "well, what we mock is a better subject than what you mock." (Sort of like the "My hobby is better than your hobby" attitude.) Still, I wouldn't take it too seriously, especially given who said it.

As for the "Sheets" thing, I have no idea what's that about. It also shows up in the replies if you're reading them via the popup (rather than the archive link), so it leads me to think that it might be a mistake someone made or something they forgot to take out before they uploaded that newest layout/comments template.

I don't know if it's the morning caffeine talking or what, but posts like this make me want to roll my eyes at all sides till I'm dizzy.

Everything can be proclaimed as lame if your outlook is jaded enough. This doesn't strike me as particularly original or insightful, nor is it all that funny. I don't know, maybe I'm just being my lam0r self here, but in things like MS Reporting (and FW reading) what usually amuses me are the bizarre quirks people have, and not so much "OMG u r sux0r!!!11" YMMV, of course.

A person could go on a scoffing spree and denounce everything, but what good does it really do? Sure, fic has an element of "why don't you put that energy toward writing something completely new?", but then, it can be fun to write and fun to read. You can say that about anything. So who cares?

I'm such a lam0r. I'll be over in the corner singing "Kumbaya." I blame the caffeine.

Addendum - Yeah, it's a little embarrassing (coming from the ficcer side of the pool) that people are upset about a blatant troll. But I can't harp on them all that much, at least not yet. The posts I saw were lecturing and not hysterical.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]aruru
2003-07-03 06:04 pm UTC (link)
Oh, I'm not harping on them either (yet), but I just find the whole "going in and attempting to lecture" bit just unintentionally adding fuel for the potential wank by falling for the oldest trick in the book.

I mean, really: So some random person on the Internet (in this case, a "known" person) doesn't understand why some people like some random choice of hobby and makes an uninformed opinion about it. So what? The person's not only entitled to that opinion, but additionally, it's not like this is the first time it's happened, and it won't be the last.

The humor of the situation lies more on whether the person in question fails to realize that other people might not understand his own choice of hobbies and think him "freaky" or "lame" for them, and of course, said person then throws a tantrum when this is pointed out to him/her.

Now, I'm no "expert" or "insider" on DL/Quasidan or any of the other LJ Drama folks, but from reading the site on an occassional basis, I can tell the following things:

-The people running the site are intelligent enough to realize the humor/irony of the aforementioned behavior.
-The people running the site are also VERY fond of creating their own drama within the replies. (Which, regardless of whether you approve of it or not, makes sense - how are they going to keep their particular brand of "notoriety" if there aren't people that hate their guts?)

Based on that, then it's only natural that DL wrote what he wrote, and repeated the same attitude in his reply.

Simply put, the dude's perfectly harmless. He's kind of like an archetypal trickster - with his dicking around, he amuses some and infuriates others, sometimes even does both at the same time, or infuriates or amuses the same individual spectator at different points*. The only "power" that he has is the one granted to him by the people that take his antics to heart.

"So why the hell did you post this here, then? Isn't that giving him what he wants?"

Simple: I figured that, given the nature of this community, other people would see the inherent humor of the whole situation that I'm seeing (MSR members getting a bit antsy when an "outsider" finds not only the Sues funny, but the whole concept of fanfic itself.). This is why I made it a point to emphasize (particularly for the folks who're not familiar with LJ Drama) that the antics displayed by the person who did the writeup are nothing new or unusual coming from him, which is what the people who replied to him attempting to lecture obviously missed.

These are all just my personal observations, though. I could be wrong.

*[I can't say the same for some of the people that reply there, though. While there are plenty who seem amusing and interesting enough on their own right, there are also plenty others who are far too obviously a mere bunch of yes-men that play along and parrot anything said to keep some sort of imagined "favor" with the admins of the site. But then again, this is nothing new or surprising to me, I've seen it before on sites with similar natures to that of LJ Drama. *shrug*]

Well you'll forgive me if I really don't see how antagonizing a group of people for no real reason is supposed to be funny, humorus or entertaining.

It's like teasing a dog with a treat, sure there may be some humor in the dog antics but that doesn't change the fact that action itself is cruel.

I mean baiting people into arguments is NOT a talent one should be proud of. It seems more sad and pathetic to me. This person can't seem to think of intelligent topics, so instead he posts inflammatory comments to make people pay attention.

Note that at no point did I say the behavior was fair or acceptable.

Analyzing and attempting to understand something, or even finding certain aspects of it fascinating/amusing, is not the same as condoning it - if it were, then psychiatrists would be the first people applauding all the crazies such as myself folks they deal with than trying to cure them.

So yes, I do think his action was wanky as hell, but I'd be lying if I denied that my first reaction at seeing the post was to grin knowingly and go "Oh man, this may open SUCH a can of worms if the MSRers that submitted the original incident get ahold of it." And maybe it's my own odd sense of morals, but I find these antics far more forgivable than say, those of the genuinely elitist/holier-than-thou snot types.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

I don't know the backstory, but I read it as genuine and baiting. The baiting part is clear, and it's no big secret that that will set off a lot of people - but it didn't really seem like a wink-nudge comment from someone who actually doesn't mind fic. But then, I can't speak for anyone else.

And about the trickster bit, I have to concur with that. Generally there's some meaning to a good trickster bit, not just "let's poke sticks into the monkeys' cages to make them howl."

I have to stop analyzing humor, because I am a big, big wanker. Shoot me.

Oh, my bad - I did not mean my little "analysis" to imply that he may not have meant what he said this time (Personally, I didn't get the feeling that it's a wink-nudge comment in this particular case, either.). However, I did point out in the original post that it was obvious to me (due to being an occassional enough reader of the site to recognize patterns) that he did these things - and I quote: "regardless of whether he actually honestly believes what he says or not." (Perhaps I should've made that part a bit more noticeable for the other readers by ictalizing or bolding it, as it's in the middle of a small paragraph, and that point might be missed if you skim-read what I wrote.)

I'm sure there's a few people who're wondering why am I going through so much "trouble" to "defend" these folks (who are complete strangers to me, btw - I do not seem to revolve remotely near any of their circles), and I'll answer why. Simply put: to me, the people running LJ Drama are, at the core, absolutely NO different at what they're doing there than what we are doing here in F_W. They simply have a different comedic approach. And honestly, since when was humor anything but subjective?

So really, y'all: Sit back, relax, and be amused by both the MSRers who can't see transparent baiting for what it is, and those peeps who will come in to mindlessly back up whatever DL/Quasidan says because of some self-styled perception that the site is ANYTHING other than ONE BIG MOTHERFUCKING JOKE*. Because I don't doubt that eventually, at some random point in the future, the guy's going to turn around and bite them in the ass HARD, due to that very nature of his you see now. And of course, it will be beautifully hilarious when it happens, as they'll never know what hit 'em. :D

*[And a self-admitted one, too - from what I remember reading, the very reason the owner came up with the idea was because her own journal and persona was constantly finding itself at the center of many a melodrama.]
