Dominic Deagan rape wank
*write up taken from wank_report cause I'm too lazy to do it myself. But it was taking too long to show up here( the wank starts on page 3)

Over on this thread in the Dominic Deegan forums

http://forums.keenspot.com/viewtopic.php?t=84069

Backstory: one of the female characters in the comic is revealed to have undergone a rape at the hands of a recently introduced character many years earlier.

For the first couple of pages, there's friendly discourse on the moral issues (namely, raping someone to save their life). Enter Fuego Fish. Fuego Fish accuses everyone in the thread of defending rape, and accuses Mookie (Dominic Deegan's author) of being a hack writer and a misogynist. Several forumites respond. Everyone just gets angrier and angrier. Fuego Fish later posts a low-quality comic in the comments which involves a stick figure raping Mookie.

It's a healthy sized wank. 200+ comments and growing.

Er, someone got raped to save their life? Huh, I think some women would prefer death in some cases.

What's worse, a friend of mine once stated a desire to start a comic but was afraid that he wouldn't be able to make it look as pretty as Dominic Deegan.

And then I laughed until I soiled myself.

I think this comic is one of the (extremely) few stories that involve rape, and have the rapist not be utterly evil and the act get SOME reasons other than the normal ones. He still did a crime, though. I can understand both the rapee(?) forgiving that character(and I mean in a non-Stockholm sense) or hating them. In this case, the character in question apparently did both. Shortly after she literally bashed his face in with a hammer(not in the funfun anime sense, but quite literally).
Other characters? Another character basically flips out over it, happy over it she is definitely not. If you want to accusse the author of being a misogynist, you'd only have a point if you'd take the clothes he uses for his female characters as proof. This scene here does not really work, and thus this Fuego Fish really exxagerates a LOT.

The proper usage of this plot device is rare though, most stories that involve it fail there. It's a plot device that, in my opinion, should not be used. In this case, it kinda works. Hack writer? I'd not say so. Misogynist? Don't think so either. Using a plot device that, really, should probably not be used? Yes, I'd say so.

How come two comic things I like involve that stupid device -.-;

Yes...regardless of how talented the writer is, rape is just one of those issues that I think people should generally avoid.

Point in context - I was scouring through FF.net fanfic the other day (I know, I know...for shame), and I came upon a fantastically well-written story that had me hooked the whole way through...and then it's revealed at the very end, barely a two line mention in a paragraph, that two of the "involved" characters had a history of rape between them. As well written as it is, that had me do a double-take, and even if the rest of the story was clinched wonderfully, that one addition still gnawed at me until the end. Given the context of the characters, I suppose it would be befitting that she would forgive him (they *are* vampires after all) after a few centuries or so, but to to later fall in love with him? That one reference left a bad taste in my mouth long after I finished the story.

Compelling as the drama of rape might be to work with, it's just a topic that flares tempers too much.

I have to disagree.

I don't like the idea that rape should be hidden, and it that it should never be discussed or used in a story.

I agree that rape isn't a topic that should be used lightly, but I really do think the author handled it tastefully and had a good reason for including it in the story.

I don't know whether to agree or disagree with you or not. On the one hand, I've used rape/sexual abuse as a plot point myself ...

On the other hand I just read Spider-Man/The Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do. Oh my God, usually I like Kevin Smith. Usually he can write GOOD dialogue. So why the hell did he have The Black Cat say something as horribly cliched as "We must stop the cycle of violence!" on every. single. freakin'. page.

... *Tries not to wank at the troll* Seriously, Dominic Deegan is NOT serious business. The troll seems to be complaining about another badpast!Female character, and, well...

Let's take a look: Stonewater himself watches his hero die protecting Melna and her mother; then watches Melna's mother die after killing the killer; then tries to save Melna from death, but to 'claim' her he has to consumate. He REALLY doesn't want to do this, but he HAS to save her, because he's a basically good guy and found everything that lead up to this horrifying and couldn't just let them kill her for being a female orphan-- and he wants to follow in his hero's footsteps by showing her equality. He tries to calm her down, tries to explain, can't, and in desperation carries on with the consumation, but with deep deep feelings of GUILT. Then she smashes his face in with his hammer, runs away, and they don't see each other for years.

In the interm, Melna gets over it all, heals, copes, and kinda turns into an ultra!feminist, but is really pretty well-adjusted, all things considered. Stonewater is still guilty over it all, and is absolutely shocked by seeing her again drumming for the concert.

... So, troll, Stonewater deserves to die why? He's not "rape-happy", and did everything to avoid the rape that he could. >.> Sometimes, people do horrible things for all the right reasons.

(Also, it's not like there aren't male characters with OMG Trauma. Let's try, oh, Dominic and Gregory? Or did you miss Their Brother The Infernomancer Who Killed Lots Of People And Experimented On Gregory And Was Very Very Bad? Or Szark-- I hope I spelled that right-- should he be killed, too, because he's a murderer? Nevermind that he was under demonic influence and has MAJORLY reformed into a very very very good person. To the point where, even though killing would be perfectly justified and easy and would stop the pain from his wound for a little while, he DOESN'T because he's trying to stay good.)

[/taking Dominic Deegan as Serious Business]

Dude, kinda wonder if the troll has read the archives. XD;; He's complaining about issues that have already been covered.

Actually, I think this person put it better than me:

"I don't know. I've recently been drifting away from the notion that doing evil creates an imbalance - retributive justice, I think - and I gather Jesus wasn't too big on it, either.

Rather, what can be done to prevent further evil should be. Here, Stonewater has no volition to repeat the act or any like it, took no pleasure to create an aversion to, and definitely doesn't need to learn the errors of his ways. As a rare thing for those in his position, he knows he was the worse tainted.

I do agree with the hammer. Both needed that."

It seems the semi-troller is backing his statements with an eye-for-an-eye morality, whereas most of the forumers feel that either it's already been reached, or follow a prevent-further-evil moral system. It's setting him against the masses, thus making him look like a troll; but not without reason, because he does make wanky coments, and he's not exactly reasonable about his views, either.
