Con troubles?
It seems this year's Ushicon went horribly. I keep finding wank on both sides, in Marzgurl's LJ especially this thread, and this from one of the con heads. I can't quite figure out what's going on, other than it won't be held next year.

ETA: I think I might have figured it out. Partially, anyway. Marzgurl had problems getting her press pass, wasn't allowed to film in the dealer's room, and thought everything basically sucked, so she said so. Calls of entitlement whore by [info]driftpeasant, and lots of wanking between them and other random friends, [info]gonsai and [info]gaara_shinobi. The other entry in the journal of [info]snaketao seems to sum up as UshiCon goers suck, a lot, and people were arrested, and they're sick and tired of this, so they're not doing the con anymore.

From [info]tintedkun,
And then you wonder why many people just don't want to do this any more.

Gonsai - we (security) did NOT "shadow" you or Kris, for your information. You're not that important. Hell, I seem to remember going out of my way just to make sure your sword was returned to you, despite the fact that you have apparently gone out of your way (as have many who have replied to this post) to make the con experience an experience that has drained any willingness to continue doing a convention.

Marzgurl - the same goes for you, and that is exactly what you've done to dick me over. Truth be told, if it weren't for asshats like you, there would be no such THING as staff burn-out. I'm honestly glad I wasn't at closing ceremonies, as unlike the rest of the staff, I would have had to taken that outside immediately, and you would have been in for one hell of an argument. </b>While I admit things didn't go smoothly the entire con, you've made too much of a damn ruckus for what small crap did happen to you. You know what that tells me? You're spoiled to hell, and I have no respect for people like you.</b>

Let's just say you aren't as popular as you like to think you are, and your self-imposed power-trip will end in a burning heap as they usually do. I'm honestly hoping to be there when such a thing happens, as I'd like to see it commencing.

And as a side note, you mind explaining just what the hell I've done on the boards as a moderator to be called a nazi? I need a good laugh, after all. And before you even say I deleted personal opinions, if it's shit like calling one of our guests a hack, that's going to get deleted. I personally would rather see our guests happy than some idiot who can't keep their vicious opinions to themselves.

From [info]moryath
Lady, what you don't know about conventions (or Ushicon) could probably fill an olympic-sized swimming pool, so I'm going to try to fill you in on a few things.

"I want my Ushicon back." I was volunteering at Ushicon before you ever went to one. I understand the underlying reasons it was created. I understand the philosophy behind it.

Allow me to clue you in.

See, here's the thing. Ushicon was created because anime fans thought A-Kon had gotten too big, too powerful, and too asshat-laden. While technically "fan-run", A-Kon was beyond pointless. They didn't feel respected as fans when they went to it, and there was no maturity to be seen. A-Kon in this regard, hasn't changed - though last year's was certainly a low point, since the dance competition mysteriously vanished and they had wonderful amounts of "fun" with the video game setup.

Oh, by the by - remember A-Kon's video game room? Gee, four screens of Soul Calibur, four screens of Halo, three of Smash Brothers, and nothing else, all the time? Here's a hint. It gets that way because the video game room is where the 12 year olds whose parents dropped them off for the weekend gravitate. Nothing more, nothing less. Sad but true, get used to it. If you want anything else in a video game room, you'll have to work hard at it and be ready for a bunch of prepubescent asshats whining about wanting to play Halo or Smash Bros all weekend long.

Getting back to point: Ushicon was created by mature fans, for mature fans, who wanted to go to a convention and enjoy themselves. They wanted a convention where they were able to have a good time, enjoying things.

They wanted a convention where real fans were respected.

Unfortunately, with success comes asshats. Lots and lots of asshats. And with asshats comes security nightmares, and customer service nightmares, and everything else.

Every time they had to compromise - putting extra security measures in the dealer's room or elsewhere, being extra careful about the badges, or whatever else - it's because, in a previous year, some asshat did something phenomenally stupid. They tried to warn people this year. They did their level best.

The sad truth is, conventions are not what they once were. A few years ago, they were real fun, and part of it was that the people going to conventions really liked anime, respected the people trying to put on a fun time for them, and wanted to enjoy being part of a community.

That's changed, and not for the better. Sadly to say for those of us who still enjoy anime, the advent of Cartoon Network and its "big" shows has started overshadowing everything.

I seriously wish we could have an ID-checked anime convention. Nobody allowed in under 18 years of age. You'd call it fascism, or evil, or whatever else I'm sure.

But if the alternative is a convention full of 14 year old asshats whose parents dumped them there for the weekend? I'll take the evil, thanks.

And as for you going on a bitchfest because some things weren't to your liking? Tough cookies. If they don't bring Ushi back at all next year, it's because of people like you, who were more interested in either being asshats or attacking the organizers than trying to help make the convention better.

Katamari Edit-cy:
From here
What's disappointing is people who see it as "I'm paying for a weekend of fun" rather than "I'm contributing to an event for the fan community". Maybe YOUR (and I don't mean you Selphish) "one comment" or "one sign" or "one action" wouldn't be a killer by itself. But it's not by itself. You do it, and someone else does it and someone else, etc. And THEN it's too much. That said, signs were not a problem this year and one member who supported the lack of signs really made a HUGE difference to the staff.
I thought cons were about watching free anime and splurging on shit I don't really need anime merchandise. Am I supposed to feel responsible and shit now?

Is that...? Yep, Godwin's Law.

Ushicon was never that great, really.

"I seriously wish we could have an ID-checked anime convention. Nobody allowed in under 18 years of age."

y'know, that's one of the things i want at cons i go to - i'm in the philippines, and the con circuit is small right now, but i won't be surprised if it starts getting more and more attention.

actually i find myself pretty much agreeing with moryath.

we have a term here to designate the equivalent of their 14-year-old population, and believe me it's a mean term. and those kids are all over the place at the cons i go to as well, and wow if it isn't kinda odd.

still, the little children who cosplay little adorable things - priceless.

Don't suppose "In The Good Old Days, Things Were Different" is one of the laws over at jurisimprudence? Because every twat blathers on about how "things aren't what they used to be, if you don't like the way it was, you're not a REAL fan, O the decline of civilisation, blah blah."

Also, "I think you think the con exists as a vehicle to allow you to have FUN!" cracked me up. Cons = Serious Business.

Aegflota.

Who the fuck are you?

No matter how good an anime con is, there's ALWAYS people bitching and saying it's the worst con they've ever been to. Always. It's one of the irrefutable laws of the internet.

I was at Ushicon. It did pretty much suck. But I still managed to enjoy myself, despite having a boring security job, and I shall be sad to no longer have a nearby con.

But, pretty much everything being said? Word. I'd kill for an 18+ con that wasn't a HentaiCon.

Translation: Great Googly Moogly, conventions look a helluva lot different when you're running one as opposed to attending one. And one person's "real fan" is another person's "asshat".

I know all about conventions. I worked several Doctor Who cons in the '80s and a CostumeCon in the 90's. That last one convinced me that it was something I never wanted to do again, and I've stuck to it faithfully and firmly.

Oh, the stories about the Who guests I could tell...there were three decent ones overall, and the rest...

Uh huh. Okay.

driftpeasant: This discussion essentially needs to be had for the good of the fandom.

But really, oh no! People have different opinions about what's fun! Whatever will fandom do?!?! How will it survive?!

moryath I seriously wish we could have an ID-checked anime convention. Nobody allowed in under 18 years of age.

Okay, I've only been to AnimeNext '04, and Otakon '04 and '05, but I definitely noticed a large number of 18+ con-goers who could've done with a large dose of sit-the-hell-down-and-shut-the-fuck-up.

And I thought that marzgurl person was having just a usual so-so opinion about the con until the end when she started power-tripping.

Besides the blatant anime fan elitism going on, I really didn't follow the implication that cosplay has nothing to do with anime.

STAYING OFF FANDOM_WANK FOR WANKERS
[info]isntitironic
2006-02-01 11:35 pm UTC (link)
Rule 3: It isn't life-threatening.

The world will not end if not everybody likes the same slash pairing as you. The world will not end the day your favourite series is dubbed. The world will not end because 12-year-old girls in cat ears are allowed into your anime convention. Actually, none of these things will even cause a mild interruption in the world, never mind its end. The world is thirteen thousand kilometres across, weighs six septillion kilograms, and is orbiting the Sun at one hundred and ten thousand kilometres per hour. It takes more than a fandom squabble to bring about the end of it. Trust me.

Should you find yourself worrying about the fate of the world while involved in a fandom squabble, follow these steps:

1) Stop typing.

2) Take ten deep breaths. Maybe play some Yanni.

3) Ask yourself: will this matter in a hundred years?

4) Heck, will it matter in one year?

5) Will it even have a bearing on what I eat for dinner tonight?

6) If the answer to any of the above is 'yes', turn off your computer and go take a walk before repeating from step one. If the answer to all three is 'no', go on to step seven.

7) Either reply treating the subject with only the seriousness it actually deserves, or turn off your computer and walk away.

What's disappointing is people who see it as "I'm paying for a weekend of fun" rather than "I'm contributing to an event for the fan community".

Dammit, I've been tricked again. I've been going to conventions as an excuse to travel and hang with my friends. I don't want to contribute to the fan community because I hate most of them.

And 18+ over rule isn't going to stop all troubles. I know some people 18+ who knew the rules, broke them anyway, then bitched about the staff enforcing those rules. Even one of them said he wasn't going to goto the con anymore because it wasn't "liberal" enough. I don't know what that even means.

I'm sorry, I can't take anyone seriously who uses a marbleized background and Comic Sans.

Just... As an anonymous fan, let me say this much to various con-staff, as there seem to be plenty here.

Yes, you don't get enough credit. Yes, I've failed to thank you people properly, yes, it's a hard and thankless task, and there are always the complainers...

So, umm...

Just remember that it is the work of you guys that has granted me, over the various conventions I've been to, the greatest 13 days of my life. You people, in running the convention, who give thousands something to look forward to, who reinvigorate the otaku spirit, who inspire so much fun...

Since I haven't given it to those for AnimeBoston '03-'05, or Otakon '05, or Ohayo '06... Since I haven't given it to the other con-staffers around the world, who while I may not have gone, have certainly helped the anime community in countless other places, let me say it now...

THANK YOU.

Is there some law that any bad thing that happens in anime fandom must be blamed on Cartoon Network?

Ironically, the cons that are becoming older are trying to attract younger people. I get smiled at a lot, and I'm 21!

Both times I went to Ushicon (2002 and 2004), I only went for one day... and didn't stay the whole day. Yeah, wasn't that impressed.

I don't like cons because I tend to lose a whole lot of money when I go. Only to come home with crap that I don't know why I bought them.

"Fushigi Yuugi Character Pencils?! WTF?"

Dude. I can't believe that this is THAT important. Rofl.

And the one who's bitching about being called a man? She does look like a man. >_>

Yeah, Ushicon basically sucked it this year, so Marz was basically stating the obvious.

But I had fun hanging with people that... uh, I already hang with a lot anyway. Or at least talk to online.

It's funny how anime can turn otherwise rational people into total assholes, isn't it?

So anyone wanna basically sumerize the Drama-rama that went down at Ushi-con this year? I'm a glutton for con gossip.

Con staff = lollerskates

The only thing funnier than congoers bitching is con staff bitching. For every ten staffers who show up for the weekend, work hard, and go home happy there are one or two who make it their entire life. The con is their baby, and anyone whose opinion differs is stepping on said baby's face. And they react like that's what you just did.

I started out as one of the former, and when I caught myself being one of the latter*, I got the hell out. A lot of staff burn-out occurs when people let the con eat their lives. Sure, con staffing is a fun and rewarding experience, but the drama whores, power players (with the bizarre need to be the top nerd in the pile), and general nonsense that happen can be just noxious.

People need to take a step back and say "Hey, this is a convention about cartoons and comic books! Why am I taking this so seriously?" a little more often. Especially old-schoolers who've been in it for a really, really long time.

I seriously wish we could have an ID-checked anime convention. Nobody allowed in under 18 years of age. You'd call it fascism, or evil, or whatever else I'm sure.

uh, wow. I thought most cons were 16+. Maybe that's just us crazy English people.
