Strong female characters with powers are just blobs of cliche!
Even the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom isn't free of wank, as demonstrated when [info]fairsmithchild shows the community of [info]avatar_fans when she rants on how the only female main character, Katara, is a useless blob of cliche.

I'll copy the entry in question here, because the community owner believes that the internet is made out of sunshine and rainbows and people shouldn't fight in her community.

I think I might be alone in this but doesn't anyone else think there's more to Avatar than who's ending up with who? It seems to me that the majority of the posts lately have been Avatar fanfiction and fan art. My disgust for fanfiction aside, there is plenty to talk about besides who you ship. So in an attempt to break up the monotony of fanfiction and fanart pimping posts, I propose a discussion:

I think females in Avatar have been cheated. Of the five main characters, only one is female - the poorly written, blob of cliche known as Katara. Whereas the four main male characters are all governed by distinguishable and well-defined personalities, Katara is completely inconsistent. Case in point: We never see Katara doing anything even remotely athletic, and suddenly in "The Waterbending Master" she's flipping all over the place like a frickin' water ninja.

Not only is she completely stereotypical and bland, the writers have the gall to make her stupid! For example, in "The Great Divide" she takes the proffering of food on the justification of "Well, if everyone's doing it, then I guess it'd be okay." Not to mention her rampant gullibility.

And OF COURSE it's the female character who has the amazing healing ability (as if she needed more upgrades. What is she, Tessaiga?)

So, are the Avatar writers/creators ever going to write in a decent female lead character? They obviously are capable of doing so, judging from what they have done with the male chararacters (Sokka, Aang, Iroh, and Zuko are all deep, unique, and fascinating characters.) I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Zuko's sister is any better.

I'm surprised this didn't turn into a shippingwank, considering the first part of the post.

It seems that everyone politely disagrees with [info]fairsmithchild, until [info]amurderofcrows lays the smackdown on Fairsmith, who apparently does this bashing thing a lot.

[info]chirachira suggests that Fairsmith put this bashing/rant in her journal, to which Fairsmith says "So do you mean I'm not allowed to discuss anything controversial on this forum? What is the forum for but for discussion?". A few commenters decide to set Fairsmith straight on what is a "discussion" and what is "bashing".

Fairsmith then whines about opinions, where she gets served by [info]amurderofcrows, who calls "Troll". Fairsmith does the classic "I thought we were friends!", which doesn't seem to work on Crows.

[info]akavertigo steps in with the Troll calling in the form of a photoshopped image. This spurs the usual "Haha, you winz!" vs "SO immature!" miniwank.

There's a little bit of everything if you look at the rest of the wank, but Fairsmith stopped responding to them all (lack of witty comments?).

D'awww, the Avatar fandom is growing up!

Edit: It appears that Fairsmith has been deleting her own comments and her friends are coming to her aid (in the comfort of screened commenting, of course). There might be more to this wank than what we see!

Plus! I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but fairsmithchild did respond to one of my comments, then deleted her comment before I could reply in turn. I think I still have the comment-notification, but can't be sure.

Still have it:

In response to my comment here (second one in reply), fairsmithchild wrote:

that might be because you guys arn't discussing Katara, your discussing
me. I don't see a point in arguing about your flame. You're having fun
after all.

--none of which I thought to be true. By the time I'd checked my e-mail a few hours later, she'd deleted the comment and hasn't reposted it to correct typos or the like. (So, yeah, there's the possibility she's deleted other comments.)

Interesting! People who wank usually delete their comments to cover their trail of stupidity.

It seems Fairsmith is confusing people liking Katara and defending her for "hating" on Fairsmith herself. Weird!

Oh, fandom! Will you ever stop being so crazy?

The post at avatar_fans covers the thing I revile most in Avatar fandom (the rampant stupid, the Katara-bashing, the ew-fanfic-is-gross, etc.) as well as the things I go all gooey for (the intelligent discussion points others bring up, how mature several of the fans are, etc.).

In conclusion, o shit your icon. *HEARTS*

If anything, it just proves that Avatar is more of a "fandom" now. I mean, what fandom isn't complete without fanfics (which I love) and then the wank that follows (character bashing, paring bashing, Trolls, and all of that stuff)?

And I have mad luff for my Star Wars icons. Especially Llama Llama Ani. XD

There's someone who's done that to me several times in [info]fanficrants. Mebbe she's scared.

It was very weird -- I thought LJ was just playing the crazy not-working-omg game again. (But oh man! There's more than one person who does that? How obnoxious.)

It's very obnoxious, especially when she deletes after I've typed of a reply explaining why she's so very wrong.

I've accidentally done it a few times myself. Make a stupid mistake, delete with intention of fixing a mistake, computer crashes or internet dies and I forget later. But oh well.

I was a bit annoyed, as I'd been planning a response and then, WHOOP! the comment isn't there when I hit the link. I briefly considered c&ping the comment notification and responding in a fresh comment, but decided that would, uh, be exceptionally wanky (+ catty to the extreme).

(Oh, yeah, I've done that once or twice myself, ahaha. Ahem.)

Have possibly done that. "I'm sure you didn't mean to delete this, so..."

Someone named maugh replied to my comment in screened mode... -_-;;

hrm. well, it sounded civil to me. (if you think that's angsty, you haven't been around the net much.) furthermore, I'm one of her friends, and I am not as unhappy as she would say. (and I share her loathing of fanfiction.)

The series is cool, REALLY cool, but you don't have to like EVERYTHING about something to like something.

and you don't have to get personally defensive when someone dislikes a character.

I still don't quite get how her response had anything to do with what I said. -_-;;

Is maugh a member of the community? I know members of the community have their comments automatically screened thanks to a past wank back in, what, June? (I don't like the screening rule myself, but c'est la vie.)

...but man, wtf.

re: the screening

So, the question now is of course, with the several things that several of us dislike about a_f, do I ask eree to let me take over avatarfans in a fuller manner, so as to make it into a real community?

-Candice

And yeah. maugh is one of fairsmith's minions. I'd guess maybe even an IRL minion.

And now everything makes sense. I was wondering why someone defending their friend's "honor" would screen their post.

It's the classic "net friend to the rescue!" ploy. They never make any real sense, aside from the "You're fighting with MY FWEND!!!one231!" aspect.
