World of Warcraft- the Pandas are Coming!
I'm not part of the fandom in question, but found this via another thread.

Purchasers of the exclusive Collector's Edition release of World of Warcraft received, in addition to other goodies, their choice of an exclusive in-game "pet" not available to other players. Some purchasers opted for the panda cub. Aww.

So, present day, and a Blizzard event in Korea (where the CE was never sold) is offering its attendees (who may be from North America) panda cubs for their WoW accounts.

Minor wank breaks loose. To be fair, some of these people reasonably feel that the CE was misrepresented as having content that would only be available to purchasers.

However, you've got those who view panda ownership as some kind of exclusive club...

You're missing the point. It doesn't matter if over a million people had the collector's edition. The point is that they are all part of a group of players that own a collector's edition of World of Warcraft. Now when you see a panda, you won't really know for sure. To me, that takes away a lot from the value of having a CE panda cub.

And those who think this constitutes legal consumer fraud.

The World of Warcraft Collector's Edition "exclusive content"
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/misc/insider/021/collectorsedition.html

The "exclusive" Collector's Edition Soundtrack CD
(Sold for a time on the Blizzard online store)

The "exclusive" Collector's Edition Art Book
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=1q6Fap0DUo&isbn=0744007259&itm=4

and now...

The "exclusive" Collector's Edition Panda Pet

are now being made available to people who didn't purchase the Collector's Edition of WoW.

I wonder what U.S. business laws have to say about this?

Deceptive advertising?

Breach of contract?

Fraud?

Others have difficulty with the concept of ownership.

I don't care if they are from Mars - hands off my panda.

Quite a bit of difficulty.

Defend what? My right to keep what I paid for? To not be robbed? OMFG! - now, I don't necessarily mean just you Caerah - not trying to flame you or anything) but . . .

What planet are you people from?

And then there's this...

Why cant you make a walking fortune cookie or something else if it has to be asian

I'm not sure whose side the next poster is on, but damn if he doesn't sum up my feelings.

BUT... BUT... Baby pandas!!!!

I've never understood why pandas are cute. They are big, smelly monsters that laze about all day and eat innocent leaves. Not cute, to me.
Now koalas! THOSE are some cute animals.

Have you ever cuddled a koala (the way they do at some large reserves, zoos, and amusement parks?) They're heavier than they look, the male has a nasty retractable talon (like a velociraptor, really!) and they almost invariably decide to take a crap on your shirt.

They do take an adorable photo, though. But if you want to take a photo with some REALLY adorable animals, go to SeaWorld. Bypass the swimming-with-the-dolphin bookings (though they're cute too) and book a ticket to go swimming with the seals. Now there's some adorable animals with the temperaments to match.

While there is a thread about misjudged animals, I would like to say that as much as I love horses, most of them are not the majestic friendly human and/or dog like creatures you see in films.

They are great big wooley cats with hard feet. You're more likely going to be nuzzled if they can smell food on you or if they have an itch, rather than if you're upset and need a comfort.

And if they have an itch, you'd better be at least 150 pounds, wearing treaded shoes and have a firm stand on the ground so you don't get knocked on your ass.

I've also heard that dolphins are bastards.

Now, rottweilers and pitbulls are VERY misrepresented dogs. They are fantastic furry balls of fun and only assholes trying to be gangsta will train their dogs to bite and be assholes. Pitties and rotties are too squeeable to hate. *cuddles rottie*

Seconded!

Though tragically the show jumped the shark just as they finally got it together. But in my personal canon, Frasier ends with the line, "buckle up, Niles" and the two of them escaping from Daphne's wedding in the Winnebago. Omg the love!

Like someone pointed out, the trip to Korea isn't cheap for most WoW players, the number of people attending the event will probably small (compared to the number of players). So it's not like everyone that plays WoW will get a panda.

btw this reminds me of the LJ wank about the number of icons for the free users...

I do agree, though, with the person who suggested a different special pet for Korea, at least a different color or something. I can understand being annoyed that your unique thing that you paid $30 extra for is no longer unique.

OK, this sounds like what they did was Blizzcon and the murloc pets. But it seems like, first off: the event probably has an entrance fee (which make up for the "zomg they're not paying for it" thing), and the pet is a reward for that. Second, most of these people will be playing on Korean servers. The people who bought the CE will probably never see their pwecious panda sullied.
