Shoplifters of the world, unite and take over
More Moz wank, from the increasingly-reliable morrissey-solo boards.

Seems that two songs from the new album were leaked, and were linked and discussed on the boards. As a result, the site owner gets a nasty note from Morrissey's lawyer asking for the links to be removed. The site owner fires back with a "contact my lawyer", posts about the current controversy, and asks that in the meantime, readers should not post links to illegal files.

Cue the ranty.

There's this:
Dear God, you just know what 'JoeMoz' was like at school - 'please Miss, can I clean the board please Miss' and 'Miss, it was Johnny that threw the paper plane, Miss' and 'Miss, I would never post an illegal link Miss, it was those other nasty children'. You can just imagine the little prig being duffed up on the playground and thoroughly deserving it.

And this:
it could have an impact on magazine reviews too' - oh what nonsense. All the music mags and journos have already heard it. All the reviews have been written and in most cases already published. Morrissey's promoters are crap at organising ticket sales for concerts, but I detect a clever head leaking album tracks. Moz is a multi-millionaire, and this will be his biggest selling album ever, so lets not have any of this 'Let's avoid wrecking the event' nonsense, please.

And my personal favorite:
The way Morrissey allowed Sanctuary to exploit and milk loyal fans last time around, I couldn't give two shits if the whole album leaks out.

Frankly, I think they leaked songs on purpose to help hype it anyway.

Sanctuary and the lawyers - they can go fuck themselves! Everyone here's gonna buy the album anyway. Duh.

Who cares about Sanctuary anyway? According to the business pages they're a sinking ship.

Morrissey, if you were so punk rock you wouldn't be angry over this. Hell, you should be tickled that people care enough to leak and download your songs.

Lots of fun to be had, especially if you have strong opinions about filesharing.

Hey, I got to use [info]sparklehorse's Moz icon!

He used to be. Before he was in The Smiths. I wish there were MP3s of Morrissey in The Nosebleeds floating around. Even if the lyrics were...less than stellar...my status as Dedicated Obsessive would be cemented FOREVAH!

I asked this kid that'd been fobbed off on me by his parents what he wanted to listen to and he said: "Anything punk! Like My Chemical Romance!"

So I put on the Ramones and wandered off. He apparently was very affronted.

I wouldn't have been so kind. I would have put on something like Christina Aguilera, and then said "she's just as punk as My Chemical Romance" when he made squawking noises.

...stuff from You Are The Quarry was available well before the release date. Don't remember any complaints back then. And even if I'd got the entire new album on mp3, I would buy it anyway, because it's Morrissey*.

I reserve the right to download Viva Hate, though. Because I bought that on tape years ago, the tape just DIED, and I'm sick of hearing "Late Night Maudlin Street" sounding as though it was being sung underwater.

...and I shouldn't be this excited about the leaked songs. I will never get over Morrissey! NEVER! (I'mgoingtoseehimhahaha)

Oh agreed. I bought 'World of Morrissey' after all, and I'm fairly certain I already had all the songs on CD. Besides, you don't get the shiny cover to look at unless you buy.

Exactly.

I've long said that if the record companies are going to tell me that I only have a LICENSE to the music I pay for, and can't do with it what I see fit, then they're going to have to accept that I believe my license entitles me to free lifetime replacement copies of any song I ever paid for.

Somewhere. Somewhere on the planet, buried by the dust of a thousand storms. Bastards. Don't leave your torch behind. A power-cut ahead. 1972, you know.

Morrissey invented 'Life On Mars', clearly.

I love the leaks, man. With some of my favourite artists, the demos are generally far better than the end result anyway, so it's nice to have both.

Here's my reasoning: If I'm going to download one song, it probably means I wouldn't buy the CD anyway because that was the only song or one of the few songs I liked. If I download everything, I'm going to buy the CD, especially if I've bought that person or group's CD before and liked them.

[info]judyhazeleyes

There was a big war in the Jason Mraz fandom around the time that the first single from his second album was leaked, and the argument people kept using (because the eebil downloaders kept saying that yes, they'd still get the album) was that now nobody would buy the Wordplay single.

The general reaction to that was "... singles? Does anyone buy singles? Do they even SELL singles in music stores anymore?"

Oh, I'm not laughing at all, they're a brilliant idea! I think that if record companies are going to persist in signing talentless artists and handing them one decent song to record, despite the fact that the internet has given people the power to avoid the subsequent albums full of crap filler, they might be wise to return to the single format in a bigger way. I only scoffed because i really and truly do not know of a single music store in my area that sells them.
