Venom Cock Part Deux
Someone has the temerity to give Touched By Venom a decent review. Not even a glowing review, a decent review. One that contains some contrarianism towards the whole 'venom cock' circle-jerk that, as a semi-pro devil's advocate, I can certainly relate to.

For some reason, [info]nihilistic_kid decides that any kind words for Janine Cross constitute both intellectual dishonesty and pissing in his own personal breakfast product of choice. Now, I myself have the love of lengthy, ornate, pseudo-intellectual invective down in my heart to stay, but this guy just rides his pony til it's chapped. Highlights include Latin and declarations that anyone who doesn't agree with him can't read.

Elsewhere, he takes a claws-out swat at the Strange Horizons editors.

I was surprised to see "Mary Sue" mentioned in the original review:

She [Preeti] wishes that Zarq, Venom's protagonist, were more Mary-Sue-ish...

Didn't realize "Mary Sue" was used outside of fandoms. Yay, learning.

He's got a good point about Cross handling sensitive material poorly, but it's counteracted by this whole "I smell shit under my lip" attitude. Liz is certainly a bitch in her responses, but is it really that much of a crime to have a differing opinion?

And if it is, can I be spanked too?

I was mildly impressed that there was supposed to be some sort of redeeming social value to this book, but then I got lost in all the droning pretentiousness and passed out.

On the other hand, "That'th a cock, hey-o!" should be used in conversation more often.

Many books that deal with similarly disturbing, brutal, "adult" themes and issues have met with popular acclaim. Suzy McKee Charnas's Holdfast series takes place in an extreme post-apocalypse patriarchal dystopia where women are raised in filthy slave pits. The free women, partly parthenogenic, have sex with horses to start their pregnancies.
Dear Liz Henry: Alldera's situation as a slave, along with the beatings and rapes, wasn't glorified. The horse bit was also seen as extremely perverse by the characters who weren't genetically engineered to use it to basically clone themselves, and while celebrated by the Riding Women, wasn't sexually glorified by them or glorified by the author. And at no point did any female get fully circumcised while severely underage and then get off on having a possibly sentient animal stick his tongue in her. There's the thematic difference. Read the series again.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the show Touched By An Angel in their heads when they see the title?

Forget the whole "Venom Cock" bit -- I kept on getting mental images of Della Reese in black vinyl driving around in a convertible to visit the weak in spirit and cheer them up by poisoning them by touching them with these big bat wings on her back.

Come to think of it, though, if THAT'S what the book had been about, that would be AWESOME.

'A Decent Review'
I'm going to have disagree right there. That, wasn't a review. A nice piece of propaganda, with a good helping of sermon, a dash of bs, and a sprinkling of guilt-tripping for added flavour? Yes. A review? No, and I might be wrong, but there seems to be a whiff of pretension as well.

There was little to nothing about the actual book in all that mess, but boy was there plenty of salesmanship! I'm sorry, but when you need to sell a story based on the merits of other books/works, instead of the story itself, there's a problem with the book. If you need to sling around feminist buzz words, to make it sound oh so progressive, instead of saying what exactly is in the text, that makes it such a proposed ground breaking piece of work, there's a problem with the book. If you need to lift whole quotes from Amazon.com, to bolster up your own review, there's a problem with the book.

This is weird.

Reading Liz Harvey's review, I can't help but think: "Hey, I'd like to read that book."

But I HAVE read that book. It's the same book that -- as spoken by the heroine's mother when she is discovered as a maker of urine jewelry -- closes out a scene with:

"Oh no, Zarq, make no mistake. She doesn't like me, but she will not tell. She'll pee for us."

...

I can only guess Harvey is writing from an alternate universe.

Her tone was far too defensive for anyone to take seriously, and it sounded too much like an advertisement. In essence, highly unprofessional, and something that publishers should not be proud of publishing, online or off.

The brief excerpts she posted from that book didn't help make her case either, except perhaps to encourage people who are fasinated to trainwrecks to buy it.

This book tortures the female protagonist so much that she reads like a My Space journal, with even more adjectives. That, to me, isn't particularly feminist, it's just plain gratuitous. Not that it should be full of polemic; I read for a story and unless female characters are actively and obviously discriminated against in authorial voice I don't -care- about deep and significant gender issues in books that aren't about those. However, even the brief excerpts of that book that I've read made my eyes burn so badly I can't even laugh at the thing.
