Boondocks wank (2 in 1, I must say!)
Since the Martin Luther King Jr. Boondocks Special, the cartoon and comic got a lot of flack for its use of the N-word, especially from Rev. Al Sharpton. Boondocks Creator, Aaron McGruder replies via random other press releases, and of course, his comic, which is found on LJ as the Boondocks Comic Community.

Lots of people toss in their 2 cents on use of the N word. The comments have since been locked, though the comic itself (dated 2/6/06) can still be seen on the main journal page.

[info]dyvinesweetness lays down the law on the N word and other forms of bad language.

"Please be advised that the word is NOT allowed here. NO variations of it (outside of "n-word"). I don’t care if you spell it with an A, 3 G's or 5 Q's. I don’t care that Aaron says it. I don’t care if your best best best good Black friend let’s you call him/her one. And I certainly don’t care that you feel as though you have created an air tight “theory” as to why saying the word will “end racism.” No, I cannot be swayed on this so please don’t try. And whining about me taking away your “voice/freedom of speech/blahblah” only makes my ban finger itch. In addition, other potentially offensive words are off limits. This includes, but is not limited to: faggot, bitch, retard, you get the point."

On this corner, Diet Snapple remarks that Dyvinesweetness is so 'un-McGruder'. In another little corner of the thread, someone brings up the first amendment.

ETA: c/o [info]anabelle_lee -- Diet Snapple, after the smack down. As Monty Python would say, 'Help! Help! I'm being oppressed!'

Counter-productive?

I've never seen so many people in one place all getting their knickers in a twist in the name of political correctness, but the best and most shining example was the person who applauded the moderator for 'calling a spade a spade'. This one will have British fans rolling in the aisles, although it probably doesn't translate; 'spade' is another and probably even more opprobrious euphemism for the 'n-word'.

For the record, I've never quite understood how a word in and of itself can be harmful; it's the intention behind the word which is more important. Admittedly in an online community that's a difficult quality to judge. Some people throw around, in ordinary conversation, words which others would never bring themselves to utter, whereas some others are so sensitive that perfectly ordinary words like 'fat', 'gay' or 'mad' will send them off into paroxysms of rage. We have to negotiate a compromise which works for the greatest number of people whilst still allowing others to express dissent. I'm not sure heavy-handed banning is the right mechanism for this, but OTOH the mod is perfectly at liberty to do that if she so chooses.

One of the few things I managed to learn at uni was this: "Language is a process, not a product". It's constantly in flux to serve the changing needs of its users. That, I'm afraid, can be a very uncomfortable thing to be involved in at times, with varying interpretations of a single word meaning a lot of different things to different groups. Maybe we all need to remember that before we claim to know exactly what so-and-so meant. The chances are very good that in fact we didn't know anything of the sort.

You know, the first ep of "The Boondocks" summed it up quite nicely:

White Woman #1: *whispers* I thought we weren't supposed to use that word anymore?

White Woman #2: I think it's only okay when they use it.

I'd love to see the "It's just a word/My best black friend lets me say it/You people use it yourselves" crowd test the theory that it's okay for white people to say it by going to Englewood or Compton and using it.

What kills me is when people start screaming, "If you don't use the word, you're just giving it power!" N-word (the one that rhymes with "she-grow") please! Using it gives it power and makes people think it's just OK to say it around whoever they want to. My ancestors were oppressed and insulted by the word. I find the word insulting and refuse to let my kids use it around the house. If you want to call your best friend that, regardless of race, that's fine. Just don't come around me with it because a beatdown will be had by all and I don't care what race you are.

My brother unfortunately decided he had the magical ability to redefine the word and remove any inherently racist connotations. He says when he uses it he means someone who is unrefined and uneducated, an ignorant fool - and I always ask him why he doesn't just say that then...there are a million words in the dictionary that mean that, why he had to choose the incredibly racially motivated word while being a large white male living in the rural South is beyond me. Because I'm sure when he gets pissed and yells it at people (which he does), they are not going to know that "his meaning" is not the one people connect with it.

I am sort of hoping that one day he gets a knifing. Not a fatal one mind you! But just a nice scar as a reminder that his being a white hick doesn't necessarily entitle him to do these things.

positivespace: This post totally made my day, especially after I had a run-in with someone on LJ who kept using the word "chink" (I'm Asian American) while thinking it was okay because she "likes Asians."

Oh, jeez.

Whenever people think these words are okay, I think of when I was still in high school not so many years ago, and a Filipino girl was called a "chink" by one of the school idiots and was in tears for most of the day.

The dictionary has other words for us all to use. I think they shall suffice for many vocabulary needs.

Maybe one day they will be "just words" and we can all throw them around, but that day is not today.

That was actually the first Boondocks episode I had ever seen and it had me laughing so hard I fell out of bed and my cackling woke my mom.

Why is that signifcant?

I hate the "n-word". I do not use. I do not tolerate it. I will kick anyone's ass who uses it in front of me, regardless of their race. I don't buy into the bullshit that by using the word, you take away its power or that because rappers use it, it's okay for everyone else. That is pure bullshit.

Everyone knows that word was used as an insult against African Americans. There's just no way to get around it. And I'm not some person who hangs on to the past to hate other races. I just believe in facing the facts and history and acknowledging that it happened.

That being said, I found the episode very humorous. I don't feel as if it was disrespecting Dr. King. I feel it was trying to say: Take a look at yourself, Black America, and see how far you've come, but how far you've still got to go. It was said in a politically-incorrect manner, in a humorous manner, but said nonetheless. You just have to think that if Dr. King were around today, he'd be outraged. That's all the episode was saying to me.

For some people to get up-in-arms about it is bullshit. There are plenty of more upsetting, important things to piss blood over than a damn cartoon episode. Some individuals will do anything to distract themselves from the important issue.

Y'know, I do get it. I still twitch (and I mean physically, so much so that people have asked me if I'm alright) when I hear the word 'fag' in certain company, and 'schizo' as an insult makes me want to spit razorblades...

... but I just can't imagine being that angry all the time. Does that make me a bad half-gay/crazy person? I dunno. I just twitch, sigh at the ignorance and move on.

Sorry, this kinda wank doesn't really bring out my funneh. I'll move on.

Hmmmm. I still remember the taste of Irish Spring the first (and last) time I said that word. I had picked it up from my friend across the street, who was speaking of some new residents on the other end of the neighborhood. My mom was so pissed at me. It was my first encounter with racism. I was 5.

I rather like to agree with a popular black comedian who says "There's black folks and there's niggers. I love me some black folks, but I sure do hate niggers."

(Okay, even QUOTING that was stressful...)

Slurs in themselves point out the negative of any group. I don't use the terms as the comedian did above, but I substitute the word 'trash'. There's white trash, black trash, etc, and I find it comes closer to what people are actually trying to express, that these are undesirables. A black person who builds his own business out of his garage is an asset to society. Same with a white person. But if that business is drugs, in either case, the 'businessman' is trash.

But is society more forgiving of the trashy behavior of some people versus the trashy behavior of others? Why are white and hispanic trash painted as the dregs of society, when rappers exhorting the use of drugs, guns, Stereotypical Rap Sex Objects, etc (something most people consider trashy) are glorified? What does this say about society as a whole, that some trash is more acceptable than others?

I love the enlightened posters who threaten beat-downs and slaps upside the head to anyone who would dare use the REAL N-word in their presence.

Because physical violence against a human being is so much more acceptable than using a 2-syllable word on them. Yeah.

In addition, other potentially offensive words are off limits. This includes, but is not limited to: faggot, bitch, retard, you get the point."

Um, no, no I don't. "Potentially offensive words"? Shit, I've gotten into fights with people over the misuse of the word "want". Does that mean "want" is an offensive word? No. You can't say that you can't use "potentially offensive words" because everyone's offended by something different, you fucking stupid ho.
