Small Sailor Moon Drama
The story according to the mice on wank report: Lori, aka Sailor Moon, aka Usagi Kou, found the post her ex-boyfriend made about her on Pocky Box and was Not Happy. When DJ Ranma S tried to diffuse the situation, she took him off her friends list. He retaliated in kind and made a public post, which includes the usual complaints about Lori and advises her to seek therapy.

Comments have been disabled but abuse of the English language abounds in the screencaps. There's also a reference to a lawsuit in the post; does anyone know what that's about?

(For bonus fun, Lori Kou disses another cosplayer’s outfit here.)

(ETA: For super-extra bonus fun courtesy of [info]braisinhussy, some more Sailor Moon drama can be found here.)

Another ETA: We have some
information about the lawsuit. Thanks anonymouse!

But wait, there's more!

[info]narcissam, without any regard for her safety, has bravely transcribed the phone post. *salutes*

Much thanks to [info]komorebi for the info about the bannings and revokation of awards.

Finally, a big round of applause to the mouse on wank_report for letting us know that there’s a movie in the works. Enjoy the preview of Tuxedo Mask Origins, everyone!

It's not over yet!

DJ Ranma S lj was suspended! Word is that Lori got him by claiming he posted her real name. s0nified has this to say on the subject. Thank you, anonymous, for the info!

Another ETA: DJ Ranma S is back.

Okay, last one: DJ Ranma S got his original lj back. The post about Lori had to be removed, but a mirror can be found here.

Re-posting from another thread. Backtrack through this baby from December, and you can see the whole kerfuffle of her Naruto group being disqualified by way of Lori's sandbagging, and their cry of unfairness. The AUSA cosplay coordinators note their being harassed by Ms. Kou, and the notice of her awards being revoked from prior conventions, and threat of permaban if she kept it up. Wow.

Marty Gear was involved? Then it's serious business - not only is he involved with cosplay apparently, but he also has a long history of very active involvement in the International Costumers Guild (ICG). The ICG folks don't put up with sandbagging. They also tend to be the folks running the non-anime SF convention masquerades (like WorldCon), so if Lori tries to sneak under the wire and compete in one of those (where the rules are usually tougher and more enforced) she'll be caught. Cosplayers are starting to show up at the gen SF cons, and many of them are encouraging it...it brings younger folk in at the door, and they see this as a good thing.

Thank you very much for that link! I'm boggling at Michi Tofu who is so eager to take the blame for Lori's behaviour. That's just sad. I'll add this link to the main post, thanks!

You're welcome. It's Wank-n-Bake, and I hayulped? Always happy to bring more kleenex material.

What does sandbagging mean?

From the third draft of the International Costuming Guild Guidelines Comittee...

It's unsporting to enter a costume that has won a major award in a larger masquerade with relatively stiff competition in the same division at a smaller masquerade with less competition. This is often disparagingly referred to as "sandbagging.

Well, it's nice to know somebody references the website I maintain. :)

As an example, let's say a miracle occurs and I win a Best Novice award for my Junior Birdman costume at Worldcon. I then enter Archon's competition with Junior Birdman as a Novice again. Costumers generally believe that if you're good enough to win with something good enough to win an award or two, you should move up to the next competition level. This puts you in a better peer competition, spurs you on to work harder on the next costume, and most importantly allows permits the Novices to battle amongst themselves for "Best Of".

I will also note that you might get away this behavior once or twice. But costumers are a chatty bunch, and word gets around. If a judge recognizes you or your costume and finds out you're not competing at a high level, he or she will sometimes pull you aside with the MD and "suggest" you compete up. Other times he or she will simply tell the MD to do it.

Do it often enough and you will see what utter furies the older costumers can be if you piss them off enough.

Hoo-boy.

I think I understood that. Maybe.

If I make a costume of ... Anime-Girl, and win in the novice costume award this year at ... AnimeCon... And I go to AnimeNeoCon with the same costume, I should enter it into the next level?

Right?

And she didn't... she won in one place, then went to another place and won there too?

Yup and yup.

The idea behind it is to allow/make you compete among your peers. What Usagi has been doing is basically akin to a college student competing against sixth graders. It isn't fair by any means.

By the same token, if you've racked up several awards as novice for different costumes, you don't HAVE to start competing as a Journeyman...but the gentle peer pressure of other costumers will URGE you to do so. Pierre Pettinger, Marty Gear, and a few others are masters of the art. I have seen it happen and it's incredible to watch.

this is probably why I don't enter competitions...

Wait, so if I make my first costume ever and go to Convention A, enter as a novice, and win an award, then I go to Convention B (let's assume this is within the same couple of months) and do the same thing, that's sandbagging? The level of costuming hasn't gone up, it's still a novice costume. I would think that if I make new costumes, then I should move up a 'rank.'

It seems to be more of a question of:

if you go to BIG Convention A, enter as a novice, and win an award in competition with LOTS of other people, then go to SMALL convention B, with substantially fewer people, you shouldn't be entering as a novice.

Ah, I see. I guess if a movie won an oscar, it wouldn't exactly move on to smaller film festivals to seek awards.

Usually, too, once a costume has had a major win, you don't compete it down. If you win, say, 'best in class' as a novice at Worldcon with your costume of 'The Amazing Rando', then you're not going to compete that same costume at small regional or local 'Middle-of-Nowhere' con, except as an exhibition piece.

Basically, if your kickass Inu Yasha wins Best Novice in Show at Anime Expo or Otakon, then taking it to Tekkoshocon, Sakuracon, Anime North, Anime USA, etc, and competing in the novice competition is sandbagging.

Several of the cons I attend now follow ICG rules and now have a rule that says if a costume has won a major award you can't enter it again.
