"I'm sick of Pyramid Head Being the Sepheroth of Silent Hill!"
As some of you probably know, Silent Hill, the horror videogame series by Konami is going to be made into a movie.
A picture of one of the more iconic monsters "Pyramid Head", along with an interview with the Director, Cristoph Gans, and the music composer Akira Yamaoka was posted in the Silent Hill community.

All's fun and good until aethrykitten chimes in with
"ZOMG I'M OFFENDED THAT GANS IS SEXIST!"

After a bit of back and forth, wherein Aethyr is told that they're over-reacting, We see that Aethyr makes a scathing post to Silent Hill fans in their personal LJ, generously notifying the fandom that they're leaving forever!

Christophe Gans attempts to justify the changing of the main character in Silent Hill from a father to a mother:

We realized after two weeks in the writing process that Harry was actually motivated by feminine, almost maternal feelings. It’s not that he’s effeminate, but he’s acting like a woman. So, if we wanted to keep the character, we would have to change other aspects of him…so to be true to the character, we changed Harry into Rose.

O_O

...I... just.. f... wh... I cannot tell you on how many levels I find this offensive. Let's stick to pure gender offenses, ignoring creative offenses and the bullshit of changing a character to stay true to their character (???). It's girly to care about your children? You HAD to change the character to a woman because he was acting girly by LOOKING FOR HIS LOST CHILD? If he were a real man, he would've just gone home without his kid? O RLY? I.. wh.. m..

My god.

I... am not going to see the movie in the theater now, like I'd originally planned. A sexist pig like that doesn't deserve my fucking money.

Fucking sick.

EDIT: Fudged up links fixed. Thanks dodyskin.

I have to admit that I thought that changing the main character from male to female was absolutely unneccessary, because what decent parent of either gender wouldn't go chasing after their young daughter in a situation like that? And I liked the first one best too, I admit, because that was my introduction to the series and so when I saw Silent Hill 2 I was expecting it to expand on the whole Samael thing and stuff, but it was completely different so that threw me for a while, I must admit. Not having gotten all the way through SH4 (yet) I have to say that so far SH2, while being a wonderful story of introspection and of how James' true enemy in the game is really himself and his own guilt, seemed to be just a story that happened to be set in Silent Hill as opposed to being about Silent Hill, so I guess I like it the least of the three I've seen all the way through (which doesn't mean I don't like it, I do.)

Still, I think both sides are being a little wanky here. They're both overreacting way too much. Aethyrkitten overreacts and takes some comments the director said way too seriously, and then Shadowtherat (and to a lesser extent deaf_euphoria) overreact to aethyr's overreaction. Wow. *brain hurts*

So, not wanting to bastardize an original character = sexist?

I just read this tonight. Gans has made a couple misogynistic statements in SH interviews, but I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and blame bad English or something.

All in all, I don't care too much about the changes, since this is an adaptation, and looks very much to be a GOOD video game adaptation. I'm so excited. :D

**wonders why people think its a dress**

If I am not mistaken (and I may be, I am quite often), isn't it an apron? I just finished SH2, and I could swear hes wearing a long apron like thing. But beyond that....

I am so excited to see a pic of PH....now we just need a pic of the grey children (sp?) and I will be happy. I need to find a copy of SH1 and SH3.....I just finished SH2 (got the crappy ending) and am pretty much at the final fight on SH4. I like the series more than RE, I must say.

I've thought Gans to be a mysogynist since this interview. But that one was hilarious, so I forgave it. *loves the bit about the nintendo machine* This one is so serious and boooooriiiing.

I'd have liked the main character to stay male, too, but that's mostly because I enjoy seeing good-lookin' men act emotional and cry. I'm just sexist in that way.

After seeing what was done with Resident Evil, I'm less concerned about mysoginist preconceptions of women and hope more that it doesn't, y'know, suck.

Even if the thought of somebody's skin being ripped off makes me queasy enough to say, "Hey, I might not want to see this movie, as awesome as it sounds."

When I first found out that Rose replaced Harry as the protagonist, I chalked it up to the usual horror film:female protagonists formula.

As for Gans' comments on the gender change and how the character is motivated by feminine/maternal feelings, I wonder if he's actually referring to how Rose also seems to be chasing after and trying to find out more about Alessa, if only because of the resemblance between Alessa and Cheryl.

Harry is boring and knows only one phrase: "Have you seen my daughter, Cheryl? She's about -this- tall..." Keanu Reeves would have been cast perfectly in that role.

At any rate, the movie actually looks pretty decent. I'm looking forward to it and Cybil's shiny ass.

We realized after two weeks in the writing process that Harry was actually motivated by feminine, almost maternal feelings. It’s not that he’s effeminate, but he’s acting like a woman.

This is kinda - mmph. It intrigues and perplexes me! also I think it kind of got wonkified in translation because French to English isn't the easiest thing ever. everything loses ome in translation.

I think Gans is talking more about the feminine maternal aspect that drives women to beat the mortal shit out of carjackers who've failed to notice their baby in the backseat. The 'why we do not get between lioness and cubs
issue, kinda.

But it IS a goddamn weird thing to say, and not the most eloquent way to put it/translate it/whatev'. Maybe Gans didn't have a close thing with his dad, or some such doodah.

It doesn't sound MISOGYNIST to me so much as just bloody peculiar, and usually my Freudly Issue Alarm is quite sensitive.

Then again maybe Gans is just a weird artsy and that's that.

Although - bitchin' bitchin' Pyramid Head design. He(?) looks goddamned terrifying. XD

Christophe Gans is directing this? OMG. Now I'm totally going to see it, to see what his twisted mind can come up with when he's provided with an actual budget. Misogynist, whatever. Male, female, whatever. Never played the game. But I'm a HYUGE fan of Brotherhood of the Wolf, and as long as no one starts whining about the French Revolution, I'm bound to enjoy this one.

Never played Silent Hill.

Never had much of an opinion on horror movies.

Watched trailer.

Honestly, it's just because it's a movie... to be successful, a movie has to appleal to a more general audience, including macho guys who would say "HE'S SUCH A PUSSY!" And certain others that WOULD comment "That should be a girl!"

It's not really sexist so much as the overall view... Like it or not, most of the world IS sexist. I can tell you from my own experiences.

So please, don't put down this work, which Akira Yamaoka says fits everything that Silent Hill is just because of a gender change... Give it a chance.

I really didn't see that as sexist. Well, maybe in a purely theoretical sense of "you're assigning certain emotions to certain genders" but not in a "making women lower" sense. If anything I think it's a good thing that they didn't say "We must have a male main character."

I'm more upset (kidding, kidding) that he said a 40 year old woman wouldn't play Silent Hill. I just got a PS2 I've barely played with, and I'm almost 39. Then again, Silent Hill would probably give me nightmares and be way too hard for me.

*goes off to try Katamari Damacy*
