dharmabum makes a post in babylon5 askingWhy there are so many Russian B5 fans. petshopboy1983 thinks it's because one of the characters, Ivanova, was a Russian. A lively yet polite discussion ensues. The Russian fans think that Ivanova came across more Jewish than Russian. The Jewish fans think that Ivanova came across more Russian than Jewish. Some people think that she mostly came across as an American.

petshopboy1983 thinks people are stupid to disagree with him because it is canon that Ivanova is from Russia, not "Jewlandia" or the "I wish I were American Freehold" and isn't afraid to say it. Repeatedly.

Not a big wank, I grant you, but I was amused by petshopboy1983 getting his fanboy-knickers in a twist when people ignore him and keep talking about Ivanova's lack of Russianness even though he keeps telling them that its OMGcanon.

Plus, Livejournal-based B5 wank is such a rarity it needs to be preserved for the posterity.

edit: Fixed some buggered coding and a few typos.

I don't understand what the Jewish vs. Russian debate is about. My girlfriend and one of my uncles are both Russian-American Jewish atheists. Am I supposed to go tell them that they have to pick just one of those aspects to identify as? Because so far as I can tell, they're ethnically Jewish, Russian by ancestry, American by birth, and atheists by belief, and that all seems to jive with me. Or does the fact that Russian Jews were forced to live in ghettos to make convenient targets for the Christian Russians for a few hundred years completely negate the Russian-ness? Because dude, so far as I can tell there's a big difference between Russian Jews and, say, African Jews. Or at least as much difference as their is between any other Russian and any other African.

My brain hurts.

Well, it's an unfortunate reality that Russians generally don't consider Jews as Russian, they consider them Jewish. It's a cultural unpleasantness that has yet to disappear.

"ethnically Jewish"? This is something I've never quite understood: technically Judaism is a lifestyle based on one's philosophical beliefs, right? So how come I hear a lot of people even today referring to it as an ethnicity (I suppose the same could be said for Muslims...)?
Of course, in the past I have often described myself as a Jewish atheist for lack of a better phrase. Recently, however, I've learned that the term I was looking for was an "agnostic Jew"; not quite sure, though... *shrugs*

Yeah, she is. ;) Jewish ethnicity, Russian background, and was probably educated very early in English.

Really, that's not a stretch, considering that that's pretty much Walter Koenig's life story.
