Homestar Runner, wanky?
You'd be surprised...

Because nothing upsets the delicate balance of the universe like a web cartoon being talked about in *gasp* a "teenie magazine".

Yep, it's basically the same "VETS VS. NEWBS!!!111" wank that goes on in pretty much all of the fandoms these days, isn't it?

I like how the poster is so against "Seventeen" magazine and its readers, yet apparently hasn't really bothered to cancel her subscription or clean them out from "under [her] bed". You don't have to bash something that everyone else is bashing in order to be cool, you know.

Pretty much. But, come on -- it's Homestar Runner. A web cartoon about a kid with a speech impediment and no arms, and all of his wacky friends. And it's not like it's been around for that long, anyway.

This is just like the time Audioslave got a review in some teenie magazine. A couple people were up in arms about it because for some reason they didn't want certain people exposed to, what is in their opinion (and in mine), good music.

I love the "shut up bitch" chick. Jumps in with both feet, lots of backpedaling after, and some truly whacky comments in between. *two thumbs up* Fine holiday fun.

Hey, with an LJ name like "gacktforever" and the J-Rock community's penchant for bitchiness, you *know* it's gotta be wank! :D

The day I saw a kid walk into Hot Topic wearing a Homestarrunner shirt, I knew...

I knew this wank was well on its way. Yay!

And of course, in all this bitching about other people liking their completely mainstream (for the net) entertianment of choice they ignore the true problem of H*R popularity: too many people saying "TROGDOR TEH BURNINATOR!" at innappropriate times. I swear, one of these days the net is going to be nothing more than muscular armed dragons and people berating the fact that other people like muscular armed dragons.

*nods* after my friend showed me Homestar Runner, for a week or so it was fun to go "TROGDOOOOOOR!!"Then we sort of forgot about it and stuff. But... it's everywhere now.

I've never understood the obsession with Trogdor, anyway. That SBEmail was funny as shit, but...I'm confused.

Is there some sort of fandom joke that I'm not getting?

I think the obsession (at least with me) is the fact that it's NOT supposed to make any freakin' sense at all. Kind of like how some of my other favorites are stuff like the email where Strong Bad does that "C'mon get in the boat, fish fish!" jig, the rave music email, or the "fhqwhgads" music video, for that matter - none of them ultimately make any sense at all. ^_^;;

That little Trogdor "arcade game" in their games section is the shit, though. XD

That's part of it. The other part of it, for some people, is that it's like a supah-sekret code, seperating you and anyone else in the know from the plebes.

Or something like that. I just like it because it's funny. *shrugs*

I don't think so.

HR's been REALLY big (as in UNAVOIDABLE big) for the past six months or so. It's been on NY1 (a cable news station in NYC) and God knows how many other places--and this was pre-Trogdor, I think. (The Trogdor SBE hit about six months ago, right?)

Oh, it has, it has. It's just that these folks in the wank seem to be totally clueless that their precious little fandom has been "mainstream" for the longest while already. Pfft.

The very first reply by that "ninjer" dude owns me. :D

And hey, I used to subscribe to Seventeen back when I was in my early and mid-teens. Am I somehow now less of a fan than they are because my "dirty little sekrit" is out?

Oh yeah, and I just saw this line in one of the replies to the first reply thread:

I can prefer that Homestar Runner doesn't become a big hit with the Aryan Nation, for instance, because I would rather not be associated with those types. I don't think that is an unreasonable thing to want.

Quick, someone invoke Godwin's Law! The whole debate should've ended a lot sooner! :D

One last quote for the road:

Hopefully homestarrunner.com's humor will filter out all those dumb "trend whores" who just don't "get it"..leaving the site with a fairly semi-intellectual and not overly large fanbase.

Homestar Runner humor is intellectual? Or even "semi"-ly so?

Could've fooled me - I thought it was supposed to be mostly goofy and random entertainment.

But the Strong Bad e-mails make really d33p allusions to many intellectual things! Like... really old video games... and, uh, "The Neverending Story"... and cold ones. Er, yeah.

Dude, there was one that referenced The Neverending Story? How could I totally miss out on that?! Link, please? :D

(See, I'm more of a casual fan that reads the ocassional Strong Bad email, so I'm woefully PLEBE. XD)

*contemplates drinking that last Sapporo in the fridge* Mmm, cold ones...

It's the most recent SB email. When the paper comes down at the "end", just keep waiting for a little while longer. ;)

This is something akin to the phenomenon you see where some anime fans will throw a fit every time a new anime is licensed by an American company. Basically, in their view, the only anime that should be accessible to anime fans are fansubbed anime... and if you're not in an anime club or if you don't have internet access, TFB, you don't deserve anime. It all boils down to the fact that they felt they had something special and secret up until all those horrible HORRIBLE American companies had the audacity to make it available to everybody!
(Though, yes, there have certainly been some downsides to it... but I'd say there's probably more up than down.)

Geez, I'm just entering anime fandom (as in "I only know the CN dubs" n00b-ish), and I already see the old guard's point. Ick.

We first need to find out if she hates yaoi and yuri too, though.

And if she "washes the backs off of catgirls everywhere" or whatever as well.

You know, despite it being mentioned months ago in the Techno email. OMG CONSUMER WHORES!!!!!1
