How to lose any respect your daughter had for you
On the New HermionePotter.net site, Dementor149 posts the essay "Through a Parent's Eyes" - basically, just your basic Harmonian essay about why Ron's wrong for Hermione, and how bickering is ever so evil, only with the phrase "as a parent" added at random intervals ["To me, as a parent, that is stealing"] Otherwise, pretty standard Harmonian essay, except for this passage, near the end of it. I'm going to quote a little more than is necessary, just to provide the context that makes it so amusing:

Why did I spend so much time on the relationships within the story? I feel, as a parent, that stories geared for younger audiences need to have healthy lessons on life built into them. Authors that write for young people should be held to a higher standard than those who write for more mature people. Young teens need to read things that will reinforce the moral lessons that are being taught by their parents. Stories engage us on many levels, open our minds to new ideas and increase our understanding. They serve us with examples of the way we should behave and how the world works. I want my son to read things that will help him understand the way the world works. I had hoped that he might find some of that in the Harry Potter books. As an ex-Satanist I appreciate the innocence of her magic in the series. Now that I am a Christian I appreciate the Christian symbology and for the most part the good, moral behavior of her characters. Where she has shown that her characters make mistakes I have an opening for discussion and an opportunity to teach. It is only at the point of the relationship issues that I fear Rowling may be making a mistake that I cannot justify to my self and use her story text to teach what I want for my son to know.

...However, that's not the reason it's here. It's one of the comments:

Tora1 - February 21, 2006
As a parent myself, I applaude you for your essay. It was beautifully written and speaks such an amazing truth! I know all to well how our curent pop culture affects our youth. My daughter recently ended a relationship with her boyfriend of three years, only to turn around to date another boy. They two constantly bicker, I am so worried for her, she says she's in love. I only foresee a sad and lonely and painful future, rife with divorce. Thank you for this essay, I plan on showing it to my daughter!

...She's going to show her daughter an anti-Ron/Hermione essay to show why she shouldn't be dating her current boyfriend. If only we could see that conversation.

"Rife with divorce"? Is their future marriage going to be so bad that they'll have to get divorced more than once? Is practicing some bizzaro form of reverse-polygamy legal?

In the cause of stating the bleedin' obvious:

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are *drumroll perleeze* Fictional Characters.

None of this happened. Ever.

*whispers conspiratorially* It's all made up. It doesn't matter.

It's a story. Durr.

And I like that story lots, but couldn't care what direction any of it takes, so long as it stays entertaining.

Okay. Haven't read any Harry Potter. At all. Yeah, wierd, I know. But, what is the point of this again? Satanism is against Ron/Hermione? God loves Harry/Hermione? Satanism loves God? And stories open people's minds, but only if the parents approve? I'm so confused.

I just clicked through to the essay now and I have to say, this gets me the most:
I was completely taken in by Rowling’s literary legerdemain. Like many I expected a show down with Snape and instead found a possessed Professor Quirrell.

say what? literary legerdemain? Rowling couldn't have made Quirrell the more obvious villain if she'd depicted him with a big tattoo on his forehead saying 'I AM THE VILLAIN'.

She says 'many'? Seriously? Like who?

While I supposed it depends a bit on one's cultural experience as to what constitutes 'cliche' and what does not, but...

R/Hr == cliche, evil and unimaginative
H/Hr == groundbreakingly unique and inspiring

does not compute for me. If the single most featured female character gets the hero in the end, that feels cliche to me.

Unless Hermoine is the avatar for the socially disenfranchised, ie the bushy-haired, buck-toothed (fat, glasses-wearing, unsporty, unpopular) female readers. In that case, how dare the writer pair the 'hero' with someone who is pretty, popular, sporty (H/G).

To me, H/Hr itself perpetuates the fairy tale cliche, aka Cinderella.

Not that I particularly care about the ships in HP, which are at best an amusing sub-plot. I'm just sayin'...

And damn... and these were clean pants, too. "Mop on Aisle 5!!"

Oh my god. I worry for this parent's state of mind. They are not Christian - they are schizophrenic and in the grip of a chronic religious delusion. Whatever the case, they are five beers short of a six-pack and the sixth can is already opened.

Get her daughter out of her hands and stop her having any more. This is distressing.

I would like to see the memo where it says "Constant bickering = ZOMG SHE IS GETTING BEATEN", because that's what the above basically says. =/

Dementor149 is my new favourite wanker. I found this brilliant exchange between her/him and a doubter on silverwisps forum. This Page

TheCookiesAteMe: I just want to see evidence. Not subtext, not symbolism, but real evidence that Hermione loves Harry.

Dementor149: I Corinthians 13 verses 4 and following, New International Translation.

Love is patient and kind.
Hermione was patient with Harry during the Firebolt incident, she accepted his overtures when he got his broom back. She was patient with him all during the OotP when we were all suffering capslock!Harry. Though she did become irritated with him. She has treated Harry with kindness and understanding no matter what situation they found themselves. Like after Harry found out about Sirius' supposed betrayal of his parents and when he was sulking becaused he feared he was possessed by Voldemort.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Contrast her behavior with Won Won. She thanked Harry for his praise of her in HBP but she has never tried to boast of her intellectual superiority over him.

It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Compare her behavior with Harry and Ron over all the books. Who has she been rude to? "...the emotional range of a teaspoon" ring a bell? She constantly worries about, frets over, and cares for how Harry is feeling or what he is doing. In the first five books how many times has she been angry with him? I'm sure there are a few, I just can't recall any right now. She was most angry with him because he wouldn't listen to her about the Half Blood Prince. All the times Harry has preferred Ron over her and she always continues to sacrifice her time and energy to help Harry do what needs to be done.

Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always hopes, always trusts, always presevers.
She gave of her time to teach Harry what he needed to know to protect him aginst the dragon. She (and Ron) tried to shield Harry from Sirius. She has always trusted Harry to try to protect her. She has never waivered from acting in Harry's best interest even when she was the only one to do so, like during the time she was the only one to believe him when he said he did not enter the Tournament.

Last but not least she kissed him at the end of GoF.

Or do you not accept the Bible as giving a definition of Love?

TheCookiesAteMe: Actually...I don't. I'm atheist. Or maybe agnostic -- I'm not sure. In any case, I'm not Christian, and I don't view the Bible as holy. I do think that love is all (or at least many) of those things, but I also think that friendship is.

Anyway, this isn't the place to debate religion. This is a place to debate Harry Potter, and I think that evidence should be kept as much to the books as is possible.

Caina: Would you have said that the evidence should be kept as close to the books as possible if he'd quoted the Quran, or Pullman, or Austin? Probably not, huh? One doesn't have to believe in God to realize that the Bible (as well as many other religious books in the world) has a lot of common sense wisdom in it. And Dementor149's quote was a very good definition of the better qualities of love, regardless of where it was quoted from. He's not trying to debate religion. Many people quote sources outside of Harry Potter to support theories or opinions about things inside of Harry Potter. The Bible is another book, regardless of whether or not one believes God exists or not. No need to get upset about someone quoting a passage from the Bible that doesn't even mention God, or any other deity. That was a deity-free quote, you should remember. Now, if he were to try to force you to believe in God, then I'd have to step in and say something. I see nothing wrong with the above passage to give voice to Dementor149's definition of love.
