It Ain't Harmonian. Yet.
The Stanford Daily takes a swipe at JKR, along with a bajillion other pop culture icons. It's satire, much like the infamous Onion article about JKR's tea with Satan.

However. You can't make fun of JK and get away with it in this fandom, no siree. Small, but hell, it's HP. You know it's not going to stay there. Free speech be damned!

Anyone want to take bets on how long it is until the Harmonians claim oppressrusion (or however the hell they spell it) for not mentioning H/Hr?

eta; Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

eta2; The crazy is reaching new and exciting levels. Apparently someone has emailed The President of Stanford about the article.

To Mr. Lin:

I must say, you've got guts to post here...and I admire that. While my plastic wand is carefully tucked in my cape for the next fight, I'll use my quill here. Seems to be more effective these days.

Like Melissa, I've spent quite a bit of time, even sleepless hours last night, thinking about what you wrote in your article. While I enjoy satire as much as the next person, I don't feel you should have used ANY living person in your 'bound and gagged' scenario. Even if you had used Anne Frank's or JRR Tolkein's, both now deceased authors, I would still be incensed. In fact, why did you have to conjuer up that dispicable image at all? Having it flash on our TV screens over and over isn't enough?

You are insensitive, crass and obviously cold-hearted. To write a 'Guide to Effective Terrorism' and then attempt to make it a satire smacks hard in the face of all of us who care about the human struggle...insults those who lost loved ones in all our recent attacks: 9/11, 7/7, the USS Cole, the embassies around the world, Israel, Spain, Indonesia, Japan and other places. Furthermore, don't you think that 'vaguely Middle Eastern-looking men carrying large firearms' is a case of profiling? I know several Middle-Eastern-looking men who wouldn't harm a fly! Maybe they'll want to meet you in some dark alley next week. Do you not have any compassion for your fellow man? I would think that you have a brighter future with Al Qaeda, writing training manuals for them. I'm sure Osama will welcome your resume.

If you take so much joy in writing gruesome images, I'd say you have a future as a novelist in the fiction genre. Give that a try, why don't you? Stephen King will welcome the challenge there.

Instead of sending you an email, I sent one to John L. Hennessy. Know who he is? You should. He's the President of Stanford University. I hope he gives you a call; tells you that your services at The Stanford Daily...no, your ENROLLMENT at the university...is no longer needed or appreciated. Heads have rolled in the past for lesser offenses. You see, with your so-called satire, you brought down the house in which you reside...the great and honorable Stanford University. That alone should bring shame to you.

If I were Jo Rowling, I would be sending my team of well-versed attorneys to your doorstep because, as we all know, writers must take responsibility for their actions. Just go back three weeks to James Frey and you'll recall what happened to him. I doubt he'll get a single publisher to print his next work, which only means he'll have to self-publish...an expensive venture. And then who'll buy it? He's nothing but a washed-up, would-be.

So, I'll leave it to this. I have other, more important social, political and national security issues to think about; emails to send to CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX and the White House. No more posturing about what you said or the responses that I wrote here.

I actually feel sorry for you, Mr. Lin. With your last name Lin, I assume you are Chinese (yes, I could be wrong and forgive me if I am). However, all my life I've always admired how the respect for family and honor has been passed on down through the generations of the Chinese families. Too bad, you didn't learn anything from your ancestors. You will have to deal with that shame all by yourself.

You do have writing talent, Mr. Lin. Next time, I hope you channel it in the right direction. Good Luck.

Whereas I spent sleepless hours last night re-reading 'Diplomatic Immunity' by Lois McMaster Bujold. I think I got the better deal there.

This is just...it's...on so many levels...

I don't know where to begin. Should I start with the "stereotyping middle-easterners while making assumptions about Chinese honor"? Or maybe the "you should be EXPELLED for this"? The "sleepless nights over his article"? "Writing terrorist training manuals"?

Gah...

Does anyone want to fill her in on the fact that Anne Frank is nonfiction? Or does this mean that she equates The Diary of Anne Frank in the same category as HP and LOTR? My mind boggles.

I think that joking about bad things is so morally reprehensible that it justifies me wishing bad things upon you in earnest.

I hear Osama wants a matchmaker. He's too shy to approach Saddam on his own.

You see, with your so-called satire, you brought down the house in which you reside...the great and honorable Stanford University.

Criticism is Stanford's kryptonite. This is why it stives so hard to maintain a low profile and never offend anyone.

You know, I disagreed with the article, I thought it went way too far, but that letter is no better. (No rhyme intended).

I saw their points, but trying to get someone expelled? Does the writer have any idea what she could do if it worked? Not that I think it would, but imagine she did. The guy could have a horrible time getting into another college, and a horrible time getting jobs for the rest of his life.

All because he used the wrong examples at the wrong time.
