Bite-sized Nintendo Hotlinking wank
So we all agree hotlinking is bad, right?

Well, apparently if you are hotlinked, swapping out the offending item for something else is being a stupid petty bitch.

The 'switched' video is no longer working, but the wank remains.

ETA: My friend who showed me this link in the first place has found more! The thread at NintendoGal's forum where we can see the replacement video. Sadly, no goatse or floating turds. But it does mean the wank is just that much more over the top.

What's he on about? Replacing hotlinked images with flashing neon pink and green ones that read "I am a bandwith thief and I like little boys" is a time-honored Internet tradition.

I prefer to replace images with a photo of two gentlement pleasuring one another, and the legend "I hotlinked this image! Boy, am I an asshole!" Not only is it educational and slash-friendly, it's also illegal on the teen-friendly forums my hotlinkers prefer. Take it down or get banned, chico.

Urban legend right here, then. Too much trouble-- I just change the file name so the hotlinker gets a red X. I don't see the point of giving them another image of approximately the same file size to hotlink to. Also, I really can't be arsed.
Also, I have a really good hosting plan so even when faced with huge spikes in my bandwidth, I don't get any overages.

I discovered hotlinking to my wallpapers (by MySpacers, no less) while I was at school, so I had to replace it with something appropriate. So I found a really bad pic of Richard Simmons and I added in big rainbow letters, 'I Love Dick!'

Ahh, and the mandatory "You can set up your files to disallow hotlinking!" whiner shows up. Anyone who's tried this knows that some sites can get around the .htaccess files, along with some individual computers. Disallowing hotlinking doesn't solve the problem by a long shot.

I've always just changed the filenames and kept a few copies of goatse floating around for that purpose.

You can change your .htaccess file so that when someone tries to hotlink, they get served a different image that the file specifies. You can serve different images for different directories, etc. Try Googling for .htaccess and hotlinking.
