We're BETRAYED!! - Another QAF Wank

Anonomous posting on wank_report about the latest kurfuffle within the B/J faction of the QAF fandom. Almost a year after the series has ended, fans are still wanking about the ending.

It all begins with the posting of a question and answer period with Shawn Postoff at the Queer as Fans convention:

Gaedhal gets permission to post the recap from the main HOR Sweetmadamblue.
The fans of course, are still outraged at the ending and begin the Cowen/Lipman bashing.

But wait, could it be that one of the reasons some people loved the show so much is that they *actually had some talent??*:

Of course not! And arrogant CL apologists are not welcome here! BTW, the *secret* group told us who you are!!

The wank continues until Hephaestion moves it to a new level. What do any of you know, you're just straight women!

Wow. Something scared off the punctuation in that recap.

I love Hephaestion's contemptuous "LOOKIT ME" dance.

Fuck, this fandom is batshit crazy.

You know, being a big fan of the show myself, the only that really bugs me is the fact that I'm considered a "lesser fan", per se, because I was a bigger fan of Ben/Michael and Emmett/Drew than Brian/Justin. My enjoyment of the show didn't revolve around Brian/Justin...maybe that's why I enjoyed the show to the end. And it may be why I'm not really considered batshit crazy myself.

Hear, hear. I'm a Micheal fan, regardless of whom he ended up with (as long as it wasn't with Dr. David but well :D), I loved Ben/Micheal most of season 2 and 3, and stopped watching the show in season 4 because I couldn't get HBO. But I shied away from the fandom all that time. Because what little I read made me feel as if I was going to be crucified for not caring for Brian/Justin as a couple...

IT wasn't so much crucifying...more along the lines of "Neener, neener, neener! Mikey sucks! B/J rocks!!11!!!" I was just pretty much always treated as though I wasn't a real fan because my enjoyment of the show didn't lie with that specific couple.

THat's awful. I did got flamed once when I dared to mention that I thought Justin deserved something better than what Brian offered him, which was when I said "Well, then... have a nice day" and left. REading this and the old vodoo wank? I can't say I'm sorry.

I love Michael too! That's why I never dived into the fandom, I had no idea that Mikey was such a hated character, dude for what?

It seems like they not only hate the character, they hate the actor who plays him as well. Hal is a sellout for going "mainsteam" or summin like that.

From what I gather from this wank, the writers had an ax to grind with the actor who played Justin?

Well, he was Brian's best friend since childhood, so, really, knew him better than Justin. Also dared to interrupt Brian's first time with Justin (I mean, who does Micheal think he is, telling Brian that his son was being born), told Brian repeatedly what a bad idea was to get involved with Justin and wasn't all happy when they finally got together. Also, he wasn't immediately on board with the Justin love, and since he loved Brian, was being petty and jealous. Oh, oh... and played right in with the system when he got married to the man he loved. Bad, bad Micheal.
Hal, besides going 'mainstream', is not gay. And apparently, Hot. So... He was an easy target.
But then again, for what little I understand of B/J rabid shippers, any one not seeing the true love between Brian and Justin either is a) blind, or b) has an ulterior motive. So...
(I know I'm going to hell for this, but I always thought Justin would have been a lot more interesting as a character if he had, I don't know, died either in the S1 finale, or later on due to that. BUt that's just because I thought the character lost direction around S3 so...)

I like Hal but he has made it sort of easy for a lot of people to dislike him. In a notorious interview, he compared kissing a man to kissing a dog. I believe he meant it in the sense that neither turns him on and not in the homosexuality = bestiality sense, but it was still a loaded and dumbass comment to make when trying to promote a show about queer culture. A lot of Hal haters latched on to that, as well as other similarly controversial comments, as a reason to hate him. They're grasping, IMO, but Hal's inability to be diplomatic made it easy for them.

I must be a lesser fan than you because I didn't give a toss who wound up with who, I just hoped Emmett would find a guy that'd treat him right and not die.

To be honest I almost stayed out of the fandom totally after coming across some comments that couldn't distinguish Hal from his character of Michael and recaps that went on about the B/J scenes, but I kept asking myself what about the other characters?

There's that certain faction of the fandom that if you don't see Brian and Justin as the epitome of a gay romance (to many of the B/J fans Brokeback Mountain's story just didn't cut it and doesn't have the chemisty and feeling of their OTP) you're pretty much blind and not a true fan. Their zealous and batshit loony in their screams and cries. They like to believe they're the only ones in the fandom most of the time (thus the convention being by invitation only).

Yeah, but at least they give the rest of the fandom their daily dose of shits and giggles. It's like a crack addiction reading through the posts like this wank, I just can't seem to turn away from the utter ridiculous. I'd bring in the manips, but the manips almost seem to make me shudder worse.

It's like the change of seasons. Every 6 months, something else comes within their group that's wankable.

That caught my eye for a worrying moment, seeing as how Lipman is my last name, and these bitches better not be talking 'bout me behind my back or I will kill them and make it look like a bloody, painful accident.

But then I realized it wasn't me, and it was all good.

Not exactly. The QAF pairing DID happen (in the very 1st episode, in fact) and continued on and off for all 5 seasons, but in the series finale the writers had them split up. The wank it created was awesome.

I think I'm just bitter cause I didn't get an invite to The Gay Community.

Oh, please. QAFUS sucked after the first season because that was when they had to stop following the UK format. A little enforced creativity is a dangerous thing.

[info]wanktastic
2006-03-02 07:41 pm UTC (link)
Eh, I think the best seasons were 3 and 5, so IMO that's not necessarily true. And, really, a lot of the plots that worked in the UK version didn't work in the US version, and some of the US version plots wouldn't have worked in the UK version. QAFUS had a lot of problems but not faithfully following the UK formula through the entire run of the series wasn't one of them.

It isn't that bad if you view them as two seperate entities. In my experience, people like what they saw first because they ended up comparing them and that's not fair to either series (after the first season of the US at least). They were also designed to appeal to different types of audiences, so they're going to be different.
