Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:fandom: shortpacked, godwin alert, webcomics

There's been some wanking going on over at Shortpacked! recently. The most recent storyline has had Amber, one of the two main female characters in the strip, talked into going around in her underwear so she'll be so "intimidatingly hot" that one of her coworkers will stop hitting on her. This doesn't work.

The day of that strip, in its newspost on the Shortpacked lj community, an anonymous comes in and asks the strip's creator "Plz plz plz, Willis, don't ruin Amber with [premarital hanky panky] like you trashed Joyce n' Walky. Show some love to us prudes you used to be a friend to. :("

People don't respond well to the idea that characters not staying virgins until marriage makes their relationship trash, but it blows over fairly quickly.

But then, in the next day's new post, Willis brings it up again:

"Don't try to tell me that Joyce is "trashed" because someone put something in her hole down there. You're not going to win me over. You can tell me she may have made the wrong decision for all sorts of rational reasons, but do not try to tell me that she is a worthless human being now. It makes me sick. If the state of a girl's hymen determines how much you care about her, like the flip of a switch, you've got a way worse problems on your hands than whether you slept with somebody or not."

Things are peaceful for awhile, people either agreeing with that section of the post or ignoring it, but then the anonymous comes back. And gets wordy.

Highlights include the mouse equating being a prude in this day and age with either being a German Jew in 1945 or being someone accused of witchcraft during the Salem trials, Willis being "as much a caricature as your strip" because he doesn't just let bygones be bygones about the "trashed" comment after the mouse said it was just hyperbole, and a bunch of people getting pissed off at the mouse trying to make themself out as a victim.

Dude. I was just reading this. Literally. I'm still in the middle of it. I thought I'd forgotten to switch pages when I came to approve your post.

But it seems like being a prude these days is like being Jewish in Germany, 1945

Ok no mention of Hitler or Nazis per say, but seems like Godwin's to me.

Same here, although I don't think the person who likened the mouse's overreaction to the Mohammed cartoons scandal was any better.

P.S. Icon love.

It's Walky!

Mention of David Willis always puts me in my happy place. ;____; I salute him, as one of the funniest Transformers fans ever.

Seconded, especially with the little comments and comics making fun of the fans who take a cartoon and plastic toys far too seriously.

And then there's the comics that I relate to on a deep and emotional level:

That would be me right there.

So if we revoke Ethan's drivers license, we won't need to nuke the Middle East for oil?

So, I take it this Willis guy enjoys internet fights? 'Cause that's some excellent trolling on his part.

I was wondering if this would make it here. Mouse lost any meager bits of credibility he had after the German Jew comment, obviously, but I suppose I can understand Willies wanting to defend his strip to the end/mouse moving on.

I COULD have instead written:

"Dear Mr. Willis. At this late date, I would like to point out that your Chapter X Episode X of "W & J", I would like to neutrally submit that I thought the main character's engagement of pre-marital relations to be oddly discordant with the rest of the series message, but I wish in no way to convey any sort of judgement upon your work and hope something similar won't be forthcoming blah blah blah"

... Man, I wish I got formalized reviews like that. Much giggling would be had.

Dear anonymous,

As a fellow prude, please allow me to say this:

STOP BEING ON MY SIDE, YOU'RE MAKING MY SIDE LOOK STUPID

Someone disagreeing with your belief that there should be no sex before marriage=/=Nazi like persecution. Please.

I had a few more choice comments for you, but I gave up swearing for Lent.

Also chocolate.

So I'm kind of crabby.

No love,

Rachel

The underwear thing is all a ploy to ward off a guy.

And it's not working. *G*

Don't take shortpacked to seriously. Even when the DRAMA tag is pulled.

Well, yeah, I get that, but doesn't that imply that NO, she would not have interest in premartial sex with him?

The drama is what's confusing me. I'm not trying to take the comic seriously; I just want to know what the fuck that mouse is on about. It makes no sense!

Oh the mouse is complaining about one of the female character in another comic he did having prematiral sex. I think the mouse was going 'oh no your going to ruin Amber too."

In Willis' earlier comic, he had a very uber christian girl named Joyce. Who was also kind of completely insane. She'd lie to her parents about being married to this one guy and stalk the poor bastard (but she was very sweet at the same time) and uh, then she got kidnapped by aliens and started working for the government.

And had superstrength (I think. I know she had a jetpack). Anyway, five years of plot and her getting closer to her boyfriend and they just snap, have lots of sex, then go and get married like they were planning anyway.

And her parents still didn't believe her. Yes, I know that's a lot of tl;dr but I loved that comic. So very much. ( www.joyceandwalky.com )

ANYWAY. Amber is the shy girl in Shortpacked and has recently become sexy to ward off nerds. Somehow this leads the anon to spazz and think she'll get character development too or something.

.... I wasn't aware that 'virgin' was an actual demographic that could be persecuted. That's like persecuting people who haven't been bungie-jumping.

IT'S SO FUCKING STUPID.

(Of course, there are people who will give you shit because OMIGOSH U NEVA HAD SEX U LUSER, but you just tell those people to fuck off.)

'Kay, that mouse is clearly a complete idiot. He invoked Nazi Germany. And jumped to nutty conclusions because a character is in her underwear.

Plus, she's hawt. Glasses + a little tummy = awesome.
. . . stop trying to confuse me, dammit.

First, I'm so, so glad that I stick to the BLC forum (and trying to avoid the posting problems I've had writing fanic) for this fandom. Second, the nonny is waaaaay outta theiir league going up against Willis and his legions. Evens the ones who don't approve of PMHP are better at it that this. Third, a DW/CS iicon AND a YJ icon. This is officially my foverite wank o' the...month (so far).

" But it seems like being a prude these days is like being Jewish in Germany, 1945."

Jews in WWII-era Germany had a loud minority, politicians in their pockets, noisy campaigns about censorship, control of most of the news media, and passed laws preventing women and homosexuals from exercising basic freedoms?

Wow, my history books were waaaay off. :(
