RENT wank ahoy
It's been quiet on the RENT front. Too quiet.
Then, suddenly, a lot of intro posts all at once. A lot of questions that could be answered with a simple Google search. Some people call troll but mostly answer questions thoroughly, if not pleasantly.
So, [info]rent_head1996 takes it upon herself to post a notice.
I know this is gonna go on for a while and people are going to argue with me, yell at me for acting like the head, and call me an a--hole and worse but I really felt like I needed to make a comment on the state of this community.

In the last week or so, there have been many questions that are either A. in the movie or the show B. if you look for five and a half seconds you could find the answer or C. have been discussed to death. Please people, research and know something about Rent before you come here. We're happy to answer your questions, but it does get tedious and boring.

Second, and most importantly, there have been many many more attacks and arguments. It seems every single email I get is nasty and sarcastic. Please people, if you don't agree on what someone says, disagree with their statement politely! Most of the time someone says one thing and they are attacked with twenty or so replies. I don't think we exist to bring people down, we exist to have fun, no matter how idiotic that sounds. No one likes to get beat up emotionally.

Please take this into consideration next time you post.

I'm not entirely sure which emails she's referring to, but most of the resposes I've seen were civil, and keep in mind she's hardly the mod. RENT mod doesn't like having his omnipotence challenged, but has yet to respond.
Even after she posts that, people are still playing nicely within the comm, but since she's hardly the mod, people call her on it by anonymousing in her personal journal, which she is foolish childish kind enough to share with us within the comm.
Honey, you're not the mod of the Rent lj community. You've been around for what, five minutes? You have no business posting what you did in that post. It's not like you're this huge Rent expert. You're obviously a movie fan who has seen the show perhaps a couple of times, and I'm betting AFTER you saw the movie. Am I right? Leave it to the mod and the fans who have been members for years to smack down the newbies. You're a newbie yourself, and an annoying one, so just shut it.
So, n00bs ask questions, fangirl creates wank, and I have my first post since getting my journal from [info]anon_no_more. I'm sure the fur will fly once the RENT mod gets wind of this.
Secretly? I'm betting [info]rent_head1996 is the troll.
EDIT: [info]rent_head1996's journal is bahleeted. Boo.
EDIT2: [info]princess_di becomes my new hero for laying the smack down. Well, as much as has been laid at the moment.
Yes the incessive posting about shit that has been beaten like a dead horse is getting annoying. but fully acknowledging it is totally unecessary.

There is a FAQ sheet on this board. all you have to do is link it up and welcome newbies by explaning that.

If you think this board is bad with the snippy and snarky comments and belittling newbies. you aint seen nothing. This community got NOTHIN on CB. If you think this is bad, you couldn't last a week on CB.

lastly. that annoymous poster. eh we all get them. Calm down your fangirling and all will be good. Everyone should be careful with what they type. most Rent fans get snippy because they dont like being categorized with the kiddies that have been through the Wicked phase and had the whole ZOMG Idina!!!11!!1!!1! thing and then bringing it towards the current Rent cast and that movie cast as well. To many the show is a precious entity and they have to be strong and nasty to try to keep it that way, since the movie brought in a new slew of fans that are kind of ruining the fun for most people. I'm not saying that you were in the Wicked phase, but I'm saying I've read some of your posts and reviews...tone it down a bit. And that goes for everyone. Yes Rent preaches love and acceptance. But all shows have some message, and the fans are even worse than this. Rent is not the ends all show/movie. there is other shit out there. I'm not being nasty or anything. I'm just known for laying down the truth, and yo the truth may hurt. /endrant

EDIT3: In an attempt to...well, I don't exactly know what, [info]mister_fister essentially reveals that they've only experienced RENT through the movie.
For as many times as I've seen the movie version there were several things I missed out on. Sometimes I am online (such as now) and I have the TV/DVD on and I'm not paying 100% full attention to what I'm watching. It also helps that I have A.D.D. *sighs*
Most of you have been very friendly and nice about questions I've had but I thought I'd share how I figured a few things out myself.

I didn't know for sure if Collins had Aids. When Angel tells Collins she has to go to the Life Support meeting she says its for people with Aids (like her). If you listen close you can hear Collins say "me too". I never heard him say that.

I was also unclear as to whether or not Roger had Aids or if it was just his girlfriend that was positive. Listening to One Song Glory I heard him say "virus" and "before I go". I quickly put two and two together. Going with the flow when the group walked out of the Life Support meeting Collins told Roger he was proud of him.
I never noticed that either, lol.

Again these questions had already been answered by you guys but I thought I'd point it out anyway. It was one of those "ohhhhhhhhhhh" moments.

Happy Friday♥

This one is just kinda weird, but is a bit...preachy? So I'm expecting wank, especially in the wake of the other nonsense.

Oh God, since the "I went to see Mark Cohen but got a rude Anthony" Anthony Rapp book signing explosion, I took the RENT comm off my f-list, so I missed this one.

hey, that's why I'm here :)

my fandoms have been lacking in wank, this was the best I could come up with.

So because there are communities with worse attitudes means that uncivil discussion should be tolerated in that particular community? Right...

rent_head1996: Yes, I said I am not a Mod, but is this a communist society run by the few people who've seen the show 712121 times? No. It's a democracy run and controlled by the citizens (members) themselves. Anyone can post their concerns and people may listen and they may not.

YOU DAMN COMMIES

Anyway, Anthony Rapp is going to be at my school promoting his book on Monday night. I'm so going just to see if he's as wanky as alleged.

I dunno, I went to one of his book signings and he seemed perfectly pleasant, especially in the face of hyper teens who wanted him to say, "Speaaaaaak!" into their phones for their voicemail messages, flirty girls unclear on the concept and somewhat frightening men wanting to make him a gay icon.

So, I guess if he is wanky (which, granted, he has been online), his fans can be pretty wanky too. ;)

I saw him at his book signing in NYC, snapped a few pictures on my phone cos I didn't want to wait in line or buy shit, and left. He seemed nice. ^_^

WOW. Did he watch the movie with his head in a paper bag?

Heh, apparently this is a pretty common misconception. I wrote one RENT fic a few months ago and someone on my friends list (a normally perceptive person) said that it had never fully hit her that Roger and Collins had AIDS until she read my story. I think the film fails to emphasize that point.

But but but April wrote "we've got AIDS" on the mirror! Is that not in the movie?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]exdee
2006-03-04 05:44 am UTC (link)
nope, I think you just see Roger and April looking at her test results and it says she's positive; you can't even tell from the movie that she kills herself.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]dandywolves
2006-03-04 05:44 am UTC (link)
nope. they show a paper with her results on it, but it's never directly implied that they both have it. I mean, you'd think it would be obvious, but most rent fans are brain dead.

[info]wanktastic

I'd say it's directly implied Roger has AIDS when Mark tells him to take his AZT, the whole "AZT Break" segment in the middle of "La Vie Boheme," and Roger's part in the "Will I?"/Life Support meeting scene, all of which were in the movie.

most rent fans are brain dead

And that's the real problem.

[info]livii

Or what about the "AZT break!" "You". "Me." "You." "Mimi!" or however that goes.

And Angel singing the line "yes this body provides a comfortable home, for the acquired immune deficiency syndrome" and Collins replying "as does mine"? Or maybe that's not in the film, hum. But you'd think the whole "we go to an AIDS support group thing" would be a hint?

And I'm not even anywhere near a RENThead as I saw the play once on stage and the movie once, and listened to the soundtrack maybe six-ten more times.

Not snarking on your friend, but terribly curious.

AZT break is still in the movie, but "You Okay Honey" is pared waaaay down. It's basically the first fifteen seconds, and spoken. "We've got to hurry; I've got a life support meeting. It's for people with AIDS. Like me." "And me." But Collins' response is very quiet, and he's not facing the camera. Apparently lots of people missed it.

I got that Collin had AIDS (has only seen the movie) because he outright said so, but I wasn't fully sure if Roger had it. I knew his girlfriend did. The movie alone seemed to imply that April died of AIDS.

No. If it was originally open, but got flocked after the wank hit the fan I think its okay, but locked stuff is verboten. The best you can do is paraphrase it, and even that's iffy.

I'm surprised by the amount of apparently deaf people in that community. Even if they've never seen the original. They're all shouting, "I never heard Mark say 'Take your AZT!'" or "I never heard Mimi say 'AZT break!'" or "I didn't catch that Roger had AIDS at all!" (which pretty much translates to "I never listened to One Song Glory!") All of those things are plain as day in the movie and the movie soundtrack. Ladies and gentlemen, clean out your ears!
