The House fandom is generally reasonably sane, as long as you do not touch shipping issues. But there is that obligatory "I watch "House", therefore I am smarter than the stupid multitudes of dumb" wank that is bound to appear, either from a troll or from a sincere wanker.

And lo and behold! rdrunner82 wanks like there is no tomorrow: Just shows how sad America is when the best show to come along in years can't get higher ratings than the shows rated higher than it is (since I'm not supposed to mention those higher rated shows by name, but if it makes it even easier to understand, replace the words "the shows rated higher than it is" with the titles of the higher rated shows.).

People try to temper s/h/it down in a bit wanky "without "American Idol" there would be no House" kind of way, but here comes inevitable I am entitled for my opinion bit. Then baked_goldfish brings the ultimate "I made a dean list, therefore I am smart, and therefore fans of AI are all smart" oldie but goodie.

Don't miss the "your grammar sucks, therefore you are stupid" sideshow, and ""the best show to come along in years can't get higher ratings then the shows rated higher than it is" does not make any sense" comedy. Nope, nothing new, same ol', same ol'.

I love House and I've never seen American Idol but I really don't see where that gives me any extra I.Q. points.

(And I got lost when he started talking about the beginning days of Fox. They used to broadcast some utter crap that was painful to watch, now mercifully forgotten even by me.)

In general, crappy shows where people make fools out of themselves *are* popular because a lot of people want to switch their brains off when they watch TV. (Or, indeed, when they appear on it.) So what? The world is full of nincompoops. Their tastes have to be catered to as well as everybody else's. Good plotting, acting, characterisation etc. have never rated quite as highly as pure dumb idiocy with the general public because some folks just find thinking too painful. Intellectual capacity doesn't come into it; bad taste is universal.

...I really like House. It's an interesting show with medibabble, interesting characters and good production/writing values. It rarely makes me start to chew on my own spleen from frustration (unlike the latest CSI season.)

However, it's hardly the televisual equivalent of War and Peace, is it? It's a medical show where they have spliced in a few detective archetypes - basically Sherlock Holmes and Watson - to make it different. It works, and very well, but it's not a show that you must be a brain surgeon to enjoy. Unless they are hiding mathematical side-splitters in the show like internet easter eggs.

Five premmies + two cane waves + Cameron being self-righteous = Hysterical laughter from Professor Hawking?

(I don't like Cameron. You may. I don't care.)

I'm still kinda shocked that the entire concept of "Popularity of Show A can help Popularity of Show B, via lead-in" seems bad to these people.

I mean... American Idol is like a hot dumb girl with a lot of money. She may not be smart, but she's hot and rich, and this makes her popular. So if House is a bit smarter but not quite as rich or pretty, by hanging around with American Idol it gets to benefit from the popularity of having a hot rich friend and look far superior in comparison. Win/Win!

It worked for 24 when it had the AI lead-in. And it's currently working for Veronica Mars, as proven by the delay in episodes until America's Next Top Model starts up again. Oh, and it worked for Arrested Development when Fox scheduled it right after The Simpsons (gave it high enough ratings to warrant a full second season, but the show tanked when it was moved to another night).

I got a different read of Baked_Goldfish's post--it seemed to me that they were deliberately hyperbolizing how intelligent they were, then pointing out that they watch AI as a means of breaking the stereotype of dumb AI fan. It's also possible they really weren't making stuff up, but even then I don't get the impression they're saying that just because they are intelligent, all AI fans are as well; just that all AI fans aren't stupid.

I made the Dean's List in college more than once without trying, majored in econ and math, am working full time while working towards an accounting masters, keep up with current events both around the world and in my own backyard, read War & Peace by the time I was 11, love me some Liszt, qualified for Mensa . . .

Methinks the lady doth protest too much...

Besides, what the hell does liking Liszt have to do with being smart anyhow? Or reading War and Peace for that matter? My money's on the people who were smart enough to spend their time having fun before they were eleven.

I'm not personally much into AI or its ilk, but I'm not going to pretend that makes me smarter than the average bear (especially considering my scary Big Brother fangirling this summer, heh.) Nothing wrong with mindless entertainment, really. If rdrunner82 wanted to rant about reality shows, they could've picked something like The Swan--now there's a disturbing show.

So we're not allowed to watch both?

oh, housewank in the morning. nothing smells sweeter.

i think it's just - people like that show. people are more likely to know what "American Idol" is, even if they haven't watched it. it's a cultural phenomenon into itself. and it may not be the "smartest" thing out there, but it does sort of bring America together in a weird way.

meanwhile, i could do without it pre-empting "House, MD", but that's just me. ;)

Painfully proper grammar and badassery don't quite mix.

"You've picked the wrong bitch with whom to start a fight."

That's quite funny to me.

The wankers seem to have forgotten that House regularly ducks work to watch General Hospital and moster truck racing. He'd probably love American Idol.

I was highly-confused for a moment because the OP's username is very similar to my best friend's, and I had a moment of "WTF, I never knew she watched House! And I never knew she posted in comms at all, much less just to wank, either!" Then I looked closer and was relieved.

Anyway, wannabe-intelligent babble is very amusing. "I WATCH (insert "smart" show) AND MADE GOOD GRADES IN SCHOOL SO I'M MUCH MORE INTELLIGENT THAT YOU PIGS." :D Mindless entertainment doesn't make you stupid- heck, I love "Dancing with the Stars" and "Supernanny" and still seem to be able to operate a computer without wanking.

O Housecomm, how I don't miss you. But, hey, I'm always glad to read Housewank without having any part in it. Sometimes it's better just to watch the show. I miss the good old say when that's all you did, without having to be part of some community/message board. But I suppose those day are gone.

Am I the only one who doesn't actually like House?

And I suppose you all intently watched AI's momma, Star Search? Wonder why it wasn't #1. Some good people came from that, the comedian Sinbad for one.

Man, anyone who recommends the comedic stylings of Sinbad has GOT to be a troll.

I love how the one commenter gets all offended about the "burning gays at the stake" thing and another commenter comes in and tries to downplay it with "it's just a joke, like saying you agree with Hitler!" Because that's a thousand times less inflammatory.
