Entry tags:fandom: battlestar galactica, feminism: you're doing it wrong

It's Starbuck's womb, we just live in it. Or something.
It's only been a few hours since the season finale of Battlestar Galactia, and I'm sure there's plenty more wank out there already, but this bit just struck me as quite funny.

Over in battlestar_blog, fanbitch posts a rant on the characterization of Starbuck in the last part of the episode.

So. Kara married Anders. How does that make you feel, fanbitch?

Instead of being all about kicking Cylon ass and being independent and strong, they castrated her and now she's being a good little wifey taking care of her sick hubby. Oh, how cute. Can I puke now?

Got it. You feel nauseated. But can you tell us more about the horror of this brave new world?

It's just the fact that IN THIS CASE, children and love and traditional femininity are being used as tools to tame the women. They are used as evidence of how docile these women have become. It doesn't matter if they still wield weaponry. They're weak in spirit because all their fire goes out when babies and boyfriends get involved.

Are there any parting ultimatums you'd like to offer? A farewell swansong, perhaps?

Sorry, Moore, but I'm not buying into it. You just killed off the best female character on TV. I'm not going to watch the pale substitute you're going to try to feed us now.

Several people try to point out to her that Kara and/or Anders could possibly have a job as police/security on the planed. She responds with the rather nonsensical Neither of them were in uniform. Security officers would have been, 24/7, in those circumstances.

PAJAMAS ARE A SIGN OF WEAKNESS! Changes of clothes are a symbol of patriarchal oppression, apparently.

Because at the moment we saw her she was in civies, this MUST mean that She had no career other than being married to Anders.

And let's not forget Cally, who only joined the fleet to pay for dental school. She's pregnant and married! Obviously this must be wanked about as well.
She was in ruffles, man. Ruffles.

She may as well have been barefoot and chained to a kitchen.

There are thousands of civilian women who could be brood mares. Why make her do it? Surely the colony needs her mechanical expertise more than it needs her uterus.

Accusations of conservatism and offended liberal responses.

And why should we listen to fanbitch? Sorry to get like this, but I've been studying gender issues for almost 20 years.

And, I just now see this, mystickeeper namechecks FW. Hee.

For the coup de grace fanbitch offers up a complaint in her personal journal textualdeviance, complaining of the reception at the battlestar_blog.

First ever posting. Hope it qualifies/entertains a bit.

ETA: Wow, I'm newish around FW and didn't realize the depths of the deep, dark well of scary crazy that I'd stumbled upon...

I'm amused to see she started commenting again, but then froze comments.

Now there's this thread, which starts with "women can so be castrated!" and ends with:
Oh, and you misspelled "hypothalamus" and I have no idea why you think the suprachiasmatic nucleus is of any importance, since it's only involved in circadian rhythms.

That would be so, so hilarious if she wasn't dead serious. What the frak are you even talking about?

And some tl;dr in her personal journal. Oh, look, larger boobs. Whoopty. Can we discuss organic chemistry now, thanks?

And these little "Mrs. Toms" out there merrily swallowing the kool-aid and bitching about women who don't toe the line are nothing more than acolytes to anti-feminism. So if you disagree with her you're also racist?

[info]voodoo_in_tx points out this thread for some choice hypocrisy in action.

Damn.

Here's to hoping you never, ever stop wanking.

I apologise in advance for the mental image that may conjure up

For a minute there, I thought Starbuck's The Coffee Place was mentioned, and I thought "Man, if I could live in a Starbuck's womb and drink Chai Lattés all day..." and then I realized it was Battlestar Galactica wank, not overpriced coffeehouse wank.

So granted, I've only watched the episode once (and my Tivo cut off the first eleven minutes, so I think I probably missed something vital) but...

She may as well have been barefoot and chained to a kitchen.

Did she miss the part where Cally and the Chief were leading a radical movement to raise the proletariat up and strike back against Baltar the corrupt bourgeoisie?

(Also- is there any evidence that Tyrol is the father of Cally's baby other than the fact that they were standing next to each other at the union meeting? Did I miss a memo or a secret message something?)

And, in general, I'm not sure you should be surprised that there are going to be lots and lots of pregnancies on a show about the attempt to re-populate the human race, and one in which one of the lead female characters explicitly talks about the need to have babies in the very first episode. Bah.

Okay, leaving aside the plot of said episode (which, since I don't get SciFi, I don't know, precisely), but when you have a limited population and your stated goal is preserving the human race, wouldn't everyone be expected to reproduce? Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't more genetic material=better? Frankly, I would expect, with such a small population, polyamory or serial monogamy would be nearly a standing order, just to spread out the genetic pool as wide as possible.

I'd also like to state, for the record, that it's possible to be a strong woman and a feminist and still like children, even (gasp!) want one of your own. Having children does not end your life/career/what have you. It just changes it. In dire need, you send parents to work with the babies strapped to their backs.

Also, bitch. Please. Just because Cally happens to like ruffles doesn't make her a bad person or a bad mechanic, just one with questionable taste.

Ah, so that's who someone on FW was talking about when comparing Starbuck to Susan Ivanova from B5. I was wondering "Starbuck? Isn't that, like, some character from Moby Dick or something?"

You just killed off the best female character on TV.

She'd have to be pretty damn kickass to be better than Ivanova.

Yeah, 'cause the real Starbuck was a guy.

I never did get around to watching BSG, but I know Ms. A. Ah, how I know Ms. A. :)

Sorry to get like this, but I've been studying gender issues for almost 20 years.

It's sad, really. Twenty years of alleged 'study' and she's still not twigged that she's

a) married to teh penis-bearing OPPRESSOR!!!
b) probably not really as 'queer' as she thinks she is.
c) Desperately in need of a new debating technique, because she's still using the old tried and tested 'Raise hell, insult everyone with sweeping generalisations and then RUN AWAAAAY, RUN AWAAAAAAY!'

So MsA deletes her MsA LJ (all the better for possible future journalistic employers to not see the crazy!) but continues the batshit in Fanbitch. Ahh, it's so beautiful.

"Not to get too meta-feminist here, but typically uber-femme clothing is symbolic of submission because it's designed to either be childlike or to enhance a woman's "assets" for her use as a sexual servant."

Or, ya know, IF YOU FUCKING LIKE THE CLOTHES.

My feminism includes being able to wear whatever the fuck I want, so fuck you, MsA. Just because I don't want to wear non-gender-specific Hawaiian fugly shirts doesn't mean I couldn't take you on, or any man.

My assets include:

My Brain
My Voice
My typing voice
My creativity
My sanity (yeah, I know, you miss the boat on that one, bitch)

My tits? They're there. I don't go shaking them in employers' faces. Never got me hired, either. (well, I'm pretty sure they didn't)

20 years of gender studies? You keep saying you're early 30s. So you were a bitch at age 12? Get your facts straight.

GOD, she just rains batshit down all around her.

I almost hope she gets a job as a columnist somewhere, so I can send letters to the editor saying "why'd ya let the batshit in?"

P.P.S.: This thread: http://community.livejournal.com/battlestar_blog/127471.html?thread=1127407#t1127407

Where she talks about how the only power a woman has is outside the house....

This, from a woman, who, for the better part of her marriage (to a man, no less! *gasp*) HAS. BEEN. A. HOUSEWIFE.

Nothing more, nothing less. Her "career" consisted of creating fansites.

If that black pot talks about that kettle anymore, it's gonna corrode and die.

Why, WHY has my lovely little fandom where I could easily side step almost all the wank just EXPLODED into a fiery trainwreck of wanky doom in the past two weeks? Jesus frakking christ on a viper, this is ridiculous.

Now I have to admit, I'm not digging the whole Kara marrying Anders and running around being a nagging fishwife thing, but I'm also trying to suspend judgement until we know more than FIFTEEN MINUTES of air time about what's been going down on New Caprica. For a moment I almost started to agree with the original batshit in that suddenly we're really lacking in women in positions of power. However, Cally was kicking ass and taking names as her little post-communist union leading self, and Kara's last line in the episode is talking about how they're just going to have to start fighting until they can't fight anymore again. So it's not as if suddenly they've all turned into Bree from Desperate Housewives or June Cleaver or something.

Sigh. I may not be thrilled with the direction the show is going in, but christ almighty, how about we calm the frak down a bit here gang.

This message brought to you by the Board to Prove Not All Lee/Kara Shippers Are Certifiably Insane

I missed MsA. in her Domlijah days of glory. I feel so honoured to see her at work real-time, instead of reading through archives to appreciate the insanity.

DEAR MS A WHO IS SURELY READING THIS:

I would like to bring to your attention some really terrible television shows that are NOT AT ALL worth your valuable time or intellect. These include: House, Numb3rs, Veronica Mars, American Idol, Medium, The Shield, Everwood, Grey's Anatomy, Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck and The 4400. I implore you to please nott waste your time watching these shows, or joining any livejournal communities for them, or writing fic about them, or participating in any fannish discussion about them, or even just thinking about them IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.

You see, I watch all those shows, and I assure you I have spectacularly bad taste in entertainment. Ask anyone! It's true! So take my word for it. Those shows all suck. A lot. Please stay far, far away. Thank you!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh god, I *thought* she sounded familiar. She does the same here, if anyone wants to check out some fun Wanking In The Blog Of That Guy Who Writes Lost action.

Well not really wanking, more as spreading her fandom disdain seed.

It would only be okay for those characters to get married if it was subsequently made clear that they quit their jobs and stayed home all day yet never did housework, instead spending all their time posting on the intarwebs about the oppression of (possibly, maybe, supposedly) gay actors.

That would be feminist. All else is pain, horror, degradation, and ruffles.
