The Energizer Bunny of Internet Law
A few weeks ago, someone tried to post personal information on a Fandom Wank entry. The post was reported to the mods, who then deleted it, and banned the offender.

Apparently, Vanceone, internet lawyer extraordinaire, has been brooding on it ever since. On coming upon a thread where R/Hr and H/G shippers are complaining about Harmonian arguments that JKR really is shipping H/Hr, he launches into a rant about how Harmonians are now being stalked and no one cares.

Of course, since name calling is in vogue here, I guess no one will be offended if I say you have an unbelievable double standard, since I have yet to see any condemnation of THOSE theories. Oh, or any outrage at the very recent (within the past week) attempt by a well known OBHWF shipper to start a harassment campaign against a Harmonian webmaster by posting his personal contact info and encouraging harassing phone calls and letters. I can just imagine what would have happened had I posted, say, Angua's home address and phone number and encouraged people to harass her....

I'll be charitable and hope that you didn't know about that, and don't condone it. It's pretty sad that now prominent Harmonians are having to take steps to protect themselves in RL.

That's only the beginning. Accusations of a cover-up follow.

ETA: Waltraute points out that he's also wanking here, insisting the FW mods did nothing, even though they banned the offender.

ETA2: Vanceone shows up here to tell us more of his side of the story.</a>

ETA3: Vance apologizes for overreacting. Kudos to him. That takes real guts.

Well, I guess I'll say I'm sorry. I did overreact, I suppose. Not that I am sorry for attempting to defend a prominent colleague of mine, but that I reacted the way I did.

I knew I built that bomb shelter for a reason. Now all we need is for Caina to admit that HP is not her story and that she isn't entitled to a goddamn thing, and we can have our Apocalypse Party. I'll bring the vodka.

It's not likely you'll really care, but as soon as I came to this you gained a lot of respect in my eyes. Kudos.

Thank you. I've been expecting more mocking, to be honest. At least, that's what all my shipmates told me to expect when I mentioned to them I was doing this. I still expect it, to be frank. Ah, well. I'm sure it will happen, but I'd rather be mocked for saying sorry.

Taken. Now be a good little lawyer and go find some good (and I stress good) OBHWF wank so we can laugh at something different.

Frankly, I *love* good OBHWF wank. I'm just really bad at hunting it down because after I got banned from the SQ, I sort of stopped paying attention to the OBHWF fandom just to keep from getting into further wank-wars.

From what I've seen, very few people who react strongly in an online argument have the balls to offer an apology later. So, kudos to you for doing this

Thank you. We really did try to deal with this person, and speaking for myself, I really *was* outraged at trying to drag people's personal information into a shipping war.

But in general, Vance, I know you dislike us all at Fandom Wank and I won't try to change your opinion of us since we obviously hold very different ideas about mockery, but despite my teasings, I really don't think you're dirt or anything. I and half my friends have been mocked on this site in the past. Did you see that roasting of Melissa lately? Ouch! And if you want to know what's it like to be the laughing stock of FW for months at a time, just ask any of the former Gryffindor Tower members. For a long time, Harry/Ginny was the insane ship in most people's minds.

Aw. That's sweet. And it takes a heck of a lot of guts, too. Despite it all, I do hope nothing nasty came of what'sername's slip into jerkism. That really was horrifying.

In any case, you must now share in internet cookies. Massive arguments are always very stressful.

*buys you a beer*

Seriously, we're not evil fuckers here. You should hang around some wanks that have nothing to do with HP (or at least nothing to do with HP shipping) because this place is hysterical. It's just a lot harder to see that when you feel like the target.

Also? I just realized you may be thinking "OK, so the person got banned, big deal" because that's an everyday occurrence on LJ. It's not over here on JF. I am trying to think of people who got banned over here - ever - and I max out at five. And since it's hard to get accounts (which means you can't just create a sock and re-join) it has a lasting sort of effect.

Well done.

Nothing wrong with defending a friend or colleague, just be aware that there are limits to peoples' abilities to censor their colleagues and friends.
