U2 tour postponement wank
Does wank on a band postponing a gig go here or on otf_wank? I'm taking a punt and putting it here. It's a fandom.

So...a lot of fans, including me, had the rug pulled out from under us late last week when U2 announced a short-notice postponement of the last ten dates of their Vertigo tour. Yes, disappointing as hell and a MAJOR inconvenience and out of pocket expense* for those fans who had non refundable airline and hotel tickets. BUT - and here's a pretty big BUT - for this band to bump TEN sold-out gigs, there's gotta be a pretty big reason, right?

Well, there is. The band is being cagey and saying it's a "family illness". Unconfirmed reports have it that it's most likely The Edge's eight year old daughter - suffering leukaemia. Hear that? Leukaemia. If that's true, where the hell else is he supposed to be apart from at her bedside? (And even if it's not true, it still means one band member has a relative ill enough to force this measure, so it still sticks). And lastly, from a purely selfish fan's point of view - what kind of a show would these guys manage to put on with this black cloud hanging over them?

MOST fans, the sane ones out of us, while disappointed at best and out of pocket BIG at worst, are able to put this into perspective (WHO'S having the worse luck here, after all?). Some of 'em, however, can't seem to look at the big picture here.

The more vitriolic stuff - some of which I hear was aimed at the kid, for godsake (I'm Childfree but not that stupid) - was deleted by mod, but traces remain...

Someone named fly so high:

For !@#$ sake! Can't anyone be allowed to express themselves here, when was it the last time you saw them,huh!........if you don't like what some people have posted keep it to yourself....i know maybe thats what i should have done with your post.....but Christ, i've just about had enough of fans (some that have already seen U2 on this tour) chastizing other fans......GET KNOTTED!!!!

Hmm. The thing with stepping outside fanfic-based communities is the literacy level just PLUMMETS.

Reply from Dave C, a grown up:

Oh, come on. Give me a fucking break.

It's not about someone "expressing themselves". It's about someone bitching that they have to wait a whole other couple months to see the band, when someone very close to a band member is gravely ill.

I'm sure U2 didn't want or plan for this to happen. They aren't doing this to jip Australian fans out of a show or two. The decision to postpone was probably well-thought out and carefully discussed at length before the decision was made. Considering the lengths that U2 have gone to to perform every night on a consistent basis (Bono having to take oxygen during set breaks of Popmart just so that he could sing, for example), we know that this HAS to be quite serious for them to postpone an entire leg of the tour.

The fact that someone has the sense of entitlement that they should be so upset that the band has to postpone a show for a couple of months because a family member is that ill is disappointing. I'm aware that he or she later in the post expressed best wishes for the ill person, that's fine. I'm not upset at them, just sort of disappointed that they put their desire to see the show above the band's desire to be with a sick family member.

Christ, it's only a couple more months. I waited 8 full years to see a show too (became a fan in '97 and saw my first show in '05), so I know what it's like to wait. But in a situation like this, I find it difficult to understand how anyone can fault anyone associated with the band for postponing the show.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

The anger wasn't appreciated, BTW.

There's tons more, the board is huge and busy. As I said, I think I only caught whiffs of the wank - I suspect there was more.

Dive in.

*Re the out of pocket expense stuff: Old and wise concertgoers, like yours truly, never, *ever* book non refundables where concerts are concerned. Once bitten, you know.

Aha. I think we found the core of the wank.

There's some nice side-wank about this going on over at LJ on [info]axver's journal. He manages to sum up alot of the nastier fans reactions with his stupidity and selfishness:

axver needs to shut his damn piehole. Some of us couldn't even afford to see them once when they were in the States, and yet he's being a total pissant after having seen them multiple times and apparently being able to afford to follow them over the ocean.

And if speculation is correct and it is Sian who's down and out, then more power to her daddy for wanting to be with her.

Mmmmm, entitlement wank. Particularly nasty spooge. Get out your hazmat gear, everybody.

I've been a fan of U2 since 1983 and I've never seen them in concert. Would I be sad if I'd bought tickets and the show was canceled? Sure. But I'm a big girl and the illness of a family member would be enough for me. Lord almighty, what a stinking lack of perspective.

I thought Genesis fans were bad (some of them are still wanking about a concert that was cancelled back in 1992 because Phil Collins was too ill to sing), but this guy takes the cake. Heck, he takes the whole damn dessert tray.

I personally can't stand U2 and would be ecstatic if they suddenly dropped off face of the Earth, but I feel bad for The Hedge Edge and his family. That poor little girl is seriously ill, and all that "fan" can think about is how he's missing out on seeing them in concert again.

Unfreakin'believable.

Dude, my family was third balcony on the side for ONE SHOW on the Vertigo tour, and we were damned grateful that we were able to salvage that from the burning wreckage of Ticketmaster's ridiculous sales policies and the crushing weight of demand for U2 tickets. Edge's personal problems aside, any of the fuckers who've seen multiple shows on this tour, much less the ones who have the resources to follow the band around, need to shut the hell up and hold still while I kick them in the balls.

It's apalling. I understand why people are disappointed, but, yeah, a sick child takes precedence. Eight days isn't a *lot* of notice, but at least nobody actually got on a plane yet.

Mostly I just hope Sian is okay. (Though it's worth pointing out that Edge actually sued somebody to stop her illness from being reported on, so it's not like this is something the band wants to be public knowledge.)

It's possible I might've missed it while reading through the posts, but even with non-refundable tickets as far as travel goes, you can contact the airline to see what's possible to be done be it reschedule and pay a fee for it or cancel and have them use some portion of the money towards a different flight. The thing is to be polite and mannerly about it since going in like an entitlement bitch won't get you far.

And depending on things with the concert tickets, sometimes they will honour those on a rescheduled tour. I forgot which band it was but back in the 90s there was a cancellation but they were announcing like mad for people to hold onto the tickets since they'd still be good when the band rescheduled.

And as I was saying to v_digitalwytch (forgot to log in), he's talking bollocks about losing money on the airfares and gig tickets. The airlines involved in selling most of the tickets to Australia/NZ (Qantas, Air New Zealand, Virgin) all offered credits towards rescheduled flights for whenever they announce the new dates and they waived all fees. AND Ticketmaster is honouring all tickets purchased to the gigs or offering a full refund.

I need to kill it, with fire.

Interesting you say that, as apparently during the Latin American shows, he was flying home immediately after each show and not arriving for concerts until the very day, presumably to spend time with Sian. None of his playing deteriorated during that time - in fact, he learnt to play a charango!

So - that means he should do it for another few weeks!?? Doesn't that imply that when this first hit, he tried to honor the band's obligations and his family's tragedy, and found out pretty quickly he couldn't do both!?

Whoever it is that is actually ill, I wish them and their family the best. Obnoxious entitlement whores like axver should be forcibly deported from the human race.

On the one hand, airlines LOVE screwing people over who are bitches. But if you're nice and willing to pay the thirty dollar fee (The tickets cost what? Eight hundred?) then they will be happy to change your ticket. Unless it's one of those internet non refundable deals and then you're just dumb.

But anyway, I think this guy fails at getting U2's point.

As I said over on the clairvoyantwank thread, it seems as if Axver is always bitching about U2.  Every tour, every album, every promo shot and publicity stunt done after The Joshua Tree (with exception for The Lovetown Tour because, OMG, they actually visited New Zealand! best concert evar!!1) has been complete and utter shite if you believe what he says.  For everything they do, he can find ten ways he could have made it better.  They play music, he whines because it's not enough.  They put on a show, he bitches because it's not all about the music.  Each new song is a chance to argue with fans about why it's not as good as "Where the Streets Have No Name", every album becomes a lament for the good ol' days of "The Joshua Tree".  He talks about the diversity of their sound, but then openly flames the very albums that diversity comes from.

Frankly, I have no clue why he claims to like the band.

this is so very very satisfying.

i hope whomever is ill gets better soon, and my thoughts go out to the U2 fam. i have a ticket for hawaii, and i might actually be able to use it now that the tour's been postponed (bought the ticket before realizing i couldn't budget in the trip), but i would rather the tour go on as planned than someone be sick. this is a pretty, pretty wank.
