BPAL Cheapens My Religion!
It's been a while since we've had BPAL wank, hasn't it? This is still pretty small and relatively civil compared to past BPAL wankery but it's still entertaining.

Last night, the lab made a big update to their general catalogue. Ayodele expresses her discomfort with some of the new blends:

The recent updates really increased my feeligns of unease about the appropriateness of commercializing cultural icons, like the Orishas and Loas. For some people these might just be nifty ideas but for people who actually have a commited practice in ATRs (African Traditional Religions) the importance of dealing with them respectfully is quite serious.

There's some agreement, some polite disagreement and respectful debating, and a bit of passive-aggressive sniping on both sides.

Then Beth, BPAL's creator a.k.a. Kebechet on LJ, responds very angrily. In fact, she's so offended and indigant that she makes a whole new entry to respond again. Commenters rush to tell her how perfect she is and defend her besmirched honor, complete with the requisite "they're just jealous!" accusation. So far, nobody has had the nerve to debate her in her own entry, although the OP of the first entry is still arguing her points.

As I said, small by BPAL wank standards, but still satisfying and has the potential to grow with Beth's involvement.

My own background alienates the vast majority of people. I was brought up Catholic, and my father was a Jewish Egyptologist. I am a Hermetic magician, and have been for over a decade. I am a member of three esoteric orders, and am also a rootworker with sixteen years experience and a practicing witch. To make matters more complicated, I am also a child of Oya, have been crowned, have received my Orishas and am working my way to becoming an Iyanifa. Still, I have the utmost respect for the Jewish and Christian faiths that I was weaned to, and I still say Rosary every night.

That's a LOT of religion there.

I'm reading all the replies about how the BPAL creator has worked to align the oils to the different deities, and meant them as offerings, etc. and I wonder how in the world she can do that unless she's doing some sort of neo-Wiccan dial-a-god thing where she invokes deities she knows absolutely nothing about.

And then I read her wanky reply, about how she has nine zillion years experience in every occult tradition under the sun, and OMG, respect HER ART, because it's more about HER ART than it is about the Gods, and I laughed. A lot.

But then, I don't wear perfume and don't really get the whole BPAL obsession anyway.

*mops up after self*

This makes me WTF.

This isn't new. A great deal of the oils are spiritually/faith based. I bought Tushnamatay and Namaste in the first place because they're Buddhist related and I'm Buddhist, and I found them pleasing. :/

I create what I'm inspired to create, and as most of our customers know, I could give a shit less about marketing. If that was my concern, I would be making Angel Fluffy Fairy Farts or Flash In the Pan Celebrity Come Fuck Me oil, because that's what sells.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind some of that second stuff she mentions. And I know a lot of people who'd totally dig the first.

I saw that post like 5 hours ago when it had no comments. My, how the wank has grown. I was waiting for this.

And wow, Beth just has religion out the wazoo. I think she's the only non-Catholic I've ever met who says the Rosary. Most of the Catholics I know don't even say it on a regular basis. I don't even say it every night, and I consider myself reasonably devout.

Huh.

I know I live in a large glass house here but it still amuses me that there is a perfume fandom. *shame* But, really, how does that work? Do folk go "ooh, this smells nice" "yes, doesn't it"? or do they... demand their OTP of... whatever goes into perfume? *is fascinated in some strange way*

Mind, I am very offended because I'm a Catholic kabbalistic Presbyterian-Buddhist neo-wicco polymonotheist and the smells in some way mock my deities. I BET SHE KICKS PUPPIES FOR FUN AND/OR DEVOTIONAL WORSHIP.

Damn, I was going to put in my very first order this weekend. But reading over her post... if she can't take criticism over her product, then I'm not sure her product is something that would work for me.

If that was my concern, I would be making Angel Fluffy Fairy Farts or Flash In the Pan Celebrity Come Fuck Me oil, because that's what sells.
Really? Must be an East Coast thing. I can't see anyone I know clamoring for Fairy Farts perfume.

Wow, I'm really tired of hearing about these silly perfumes on my friends list. And I thought I didn't care about Battlestar Galactica! But this is a WHOLE new level of not caring.

This wank reminds me of back when I worked at an art supply store, and we carried that gray paper that you paint on with water, and then the marks disappear. It has a bunch of different names; ours was called Magic Paper, but there's another brand called Buddha Board. After a customer asked for it by that name, a Buddhist co-worker of mine was a little taken aback that Buddha's name would be used that way.

I kind of agreed that Buddha's name and image were misappropriated a lot, and I was the head of the paper department at the time, so I changed a bunch of the specialty papers to be called things like "Jesus Cover" and "Muhammad Mat". Good times.

Am I the only one who's thinking "It's just a fucking perfume! What the heck?" And being French, perfume is supposed to be Serious Business for me.

Anyway, as soon as I hear the indignant wail of "Waaa, RESPECT my religion and my delicate feelings", I tend to assume I'm not going to have much empathy for the person. (Says girl who hanged a couple of cartoons to her kitchen walls during the Danish cartoon wank)
