Readers are such sheeple, warnings aren't enough
So, BSG season 2 ended with a bang (or a bizarre whimper, depending on who you talk to) last week, leaving lots of fodder for fan fiction authors for the next seven months. Lots of fodder for dark, angsty fan fiction.

[info]abelard369 is one of many Starbuck/Apollo authors who jumps on the bandwagon and writes dark, smutty fan fiction. I don't know if it's based on the revelations from the season finale, because while she posts her announcement about her fan fiction in [info]beyond_insane, a public Starbuck/Apollo community, her story is SO DARK AND SMUTTY that readers must friend her journal to read it.

That's only semi-wanky: her reasoning isn't really included in the post, and I initially shrugged and moved past since I don't friend random strangers just to read a piece of fan fiction. It's when readers start challenging her as to her reasons that the joy emerges:

From abelard369:
i've been writing fic for a long time and have learned my lesson about how little writers should just automatically assume that people are reading warnings and knowing exactly what they're getting into when they are just in the habit of reading fic in a community.

-------------

Yes, exactly. i know it seems crazy, but i have been writing sexually explicit fic for a long time in various communities, and it is amazing how many people do not read warnings. it's not that they can't read, it's that many people are quite used to skimming through stuff. believe me, i used to not be so concerned, and that lack of concern led to a lot of very offended people, people that (despite warnings) really did not expect to read what they ended up reading.

--------------

i have learned to be more protective, extra-protective, of people who don't want to read that kind of fic. i have learned that i would rather err on that side than let the work hang out there for everyone, and then have people wander in and have their quite deep-rooted senses of what is appropriate, permissible, etc., as far as sex goes, be very offended.

---------------

i certainly do not mean to insult anyone, but i have been writing this type of fic for a long time, and it is incredible how many people do not read warnings and out of habit simply click through to fic.

Apparently, it's her responsibility to protect people from what might offend their sensibilities--and not just through the fan fiction standard of warnings. Readers are too lazy and stupid for that. Instead, they must "then go ahead and friend me" (you know, then revealing anything on their default friends filter to some random stranger from a fannish community) in order to prove their willingness to read her SO DARK FIC and not be offended by its content.

Then the mice get involved:
Gawd, another drama queen who wants attention. I bet her fic isn't even that dark, it probably just sucks.
Besides, there are thousands of fics out there that dont requires work...

Fun from all sides. And growing!

Maybe she ought to mention what dark content her fic includes specifically. I know it can feel odd to list all the weird, kinky, dark, violent sexual practises or whatever you have in your fic, but hey, guess what, it helps keep away the readers who don't want BDSM bloodplay feces-eating in their fic. (I'm assuming that what most of her "offended readers" did was read the warning, go "Pfft, I can read dark fic!" and then discover it to be darker than they initially expected.)

Because "dark" can mean varying degrees of darkness in a story. Some will expect serious angst and some violence while other will expect a total freak show.

You know, I didn't even really notice how non-specific her so-called warnings really were. Dark and Darkfic are such horribly non-specific terminology, I've seen everything from vanilla but angsty smut to bizarre fetishes and kinks to non-sexual but horror-film-type violence labeled "dark." It's such a generic warning that you should use it when you don't care about offending, not when you're overly senstive to offending.

You know, you're right. I was going to say that anyone who skims the warnings, reads it anyway, and gets offended, got what they deserved, but "dark" really covers a lot of ground...

Anybody else think that that's her clever attempt to control how many people are actually reading her story? Because you know normally there will be bunch of people reading your story and never commenting. If they have to beg for it beforehand it tells her exactly how popular she really is.

Power trip.

I believe people are capable of asking to read fic they want to read. Adults can do that.

I believe that fandom doesn't usually work like that, especially not in open LJ comms, and that adults should be able to figure that out.

I'm also fairly sure that polite condescension isn't any less irritating than the more popular snarky version.

Man, this seems like a marketing scheme. Tease your audience, tell them it *might* be to much for them! (Ooooh!) Mold your rep as a daring author. And then the side scheme to plump up your friend's list.

It all seems a bit calculated to me. It does scream attention whore to me.

This person hangs out in my corner of the BtVS fandom, writing stupid slash crossovers with Charmed, Xena, and others. I am amazed that she writes for Starbuck, seeing as how in all of her BtVS fics, she hates female characters and always makes them the villain of her pieces.

Could you friend me?

i'd love to read this please, i love dark and angst apollo/starbuck,in fact i want to read it so much, i've just signed up to livejournal!

Hmm ... might just be me being cynical but these two quotes sound a bit too "I liked it so much I bought the company" to be true. One "marketing" scam after another? T'would be hilarious if she were creating sockpuppets!

I'd say there was no need for her to do so but there's no need for any of this advertising crap in the first place.

Anders dies. Kara has a complete breakdown. Adama doesn't tell Lee for a week. While seeming somewhat aware at first, (she remembers Roslin used to be president and asks her to find out where Anders is) she reverts into this childlike mindset. They take her to Lee's quarters everyday. She asks if she's safe with him. She decides she "likes him". He spends a week getting her to trust him and then gropes her and starts kissing her. He convinces her to show how much she likes him by giving him a blow job. VERY vulgar language. She doesn't understand so he has to explain it. He hates himself for taking advantage of her state of mind but can't make himself stop. Next time he promises to show her how much he *likes* her.

You'd think since it's so dark and disturbing, and she's so insistent on 'protecting her readers sensibilities', she would at least have some sort of screening process. There could certainly be 13 year olds responding "omg i am way matuer enough for dark fic. frend me plez!"

Anyone seen the comment by karaluvslee? Very obvious teeny-bopper language, and a journal that was created today and has a couple of back-dated LJ entries in similar "omg BSG is lyke sooooo cool!" format. Either a troll set up to test if she'll just let anyone in, and then act all offended, or an actual 12 year old who abelard friended anyway.

Oh, crud. I go away from LJ-land on a business trip for two days and look what happens to my community!

Thanks to this, I've had to go through and modify our community rules. Apparently the bit about not posting only to promote another community didn't cover all the possibilities. I'm sure there are a couple of other loopholes that someone will drive their wank through at some point or another, though.

What's sad is that I've been waiting to read more fun wank about my fandom here. Pity it had to all rise up when I wasn't around!
