Overlord Mordax v. logic, round 2
In which our heroine, who yesterday proved to everybody that she and the batshit crazy are very close personal friends, returns to explain to everyone that we just don't get it.

I'll certainly remember not to bring up anything other than the majority opinion here, again.

Not quite on par with [info]tomakobriefs classic "If 'wankery' means having a different opinion, then please forgive me for not being a member of the borg collective.", but an wonderful conclusion for a post no less.

It's a really, really good thing we don't go over and wank, because I'd so be over there. The Witches books are about literature, and the City/Watch books are about real life? What?

The Witches books do seem to directly engage literature more, whereas the Watch books operate as less-conscious takeoffs thereof and God only knows about the Death and Rincewind novels. (And I almost wrote Death/Rincewind there, and ye gods, the slash...) So I can see that argument making some sort of sense.

Except that Jingo was about Lawrence of Arabia, and Masquerade was about Hollywood, and...I still don't get it.

So she still doesn't get it. Awesome.

The ‘tradition of stories’ I’m actually referring to is probably no older than the Victorian era, I’m aware of that.

Younger, even. Victorians were big on morals and punishment - the "Happy Fluffy" thing is newer yet.

I also think that the Norns have something to say about her happy ending fetish.

I can't think of a Norse myth that had a happy ending. Or, really, too many myths at all.

The point of the witches books is that magic doesn’t help anyone, and you can change the world just by yourself, and life’s never going to be a fairy tale. Blah blah blah. Yeah, I know.

Judging from the other thread, I think her response to knowing that "life's never going to be a fairy tale" has been to retreat into a world where fairy tales are real, and that's kind of sad.

(I also think that's not the point of the books at all; they aren't after-school specials.)

I love the little feel-good tangent.

[info]elfie_chan sez: "What I meant to say was that I was happy to see the controversy--I felt that most people were very respectful in expressing their views. The world would be so boring if we were all alike!"

Some people are about to be run over. Frankie has about five seconds.

Some people are very tall and merciless. Quincy is destroying San Antonio.

Also, he seems to think that anything ‘magical’ and ‘wonderful’ is in fact masking a horrible interior.

And that a horrible or boring or mundane exterior can mask a magical interior. That's why I like him, dammit.
