Feed my kids or play WoW?
A question from a World of Warcraft player and mother of two:

We have two small children who need to eat dinner and raids start at 5pm. Ack! How are we going to make dinner?!

Cries of "OMG PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN BEFORE YOUR GUILD" ring out.

This is picked up by Domestic Snark and Stupid Free. lauren_riot provides and provokes additional wankery about the state of the family in the United States. There is a fight over the existence of savory pies in the U.S. An entry is added to the Encyclopedia Dramatica.

The original poster deletes her journal.

The poster who relayed it to Domestic Snark gets banned from wow_ladies.

Dude...just because the parents have a hobby outside of their children doesn't mean they're abandoning the little guys. The fact that the mother has a "crisis" in the first place suggests she's taking care of them.

Believe it or not, human offspring are not aliens that assimilate the parents into impartial entities. They still remain, y'know, individual people.

Honestly, your parenting skills SHOULD be questioned. You know why kids struggle with depression, low self confidence, lonliness, confusion, early pregnancys, drug addictions, and suicide? Because the American family is becoming extinct. Why? Because parents are swapping solid, family time for guild raids and various other selfish pursuits.

Cats and dogs, living together... mass hysteria!!

World of Warcraft -- the source of all that's wrong in America today.

What is wrong with teaching kids to eat when they're hungry? I mean, I understand that letting them eat whatever they want is bad, but if they're hungry and you have a generous supply of healthy stuff, argh, how the hell is that "bad eating habits"?!

Sorry, sore spot.

Arranging your whole family's schedule around a video game is rather alarming.

But the sudden dramatic departures into nutrition and the state of the American family... uh... right. 'Cause spending oodles of time with your family NEVER EVER contributes to resentment.

My mother was addicted to computer games. And not games like Everquest or WoW...that I could understand. No, my mother was addicted to PONG. In the late nineties, mind. She also loved this game where you made the two dimensional mice push blocks around to get cheese. STUPIDEST GAME EVER OMG.

My mother would play these mindless, asinine games until 4:30 in the morning. And then she would be a complete bitch the next day, and wonder why she was so tired all the time.

Thank God she kicked the habbit...though now she's hit menopause and is still tired all the time.

My mother introduced the household to the art of the FPS. She was addicted to the original Castle Wolfenstein and Doom--and before that, a few puzzle games by Apogee. I don't remember her neglecting us over her games, but I do remember that while the news was just picking up on these games and going "OMG, THEY'RE MAKING OUR KIDS VIOLENT!" and therefore making parents paranoid, she was teaching us how to play them and figuring that shooting pixellated demons and Nazis was better than shooting living things.

Generally the parents in my guild take turns running each other's characters around while the other maintains the kids or if they aren't together or something needs both its "afk, children need *important thing here*." We as a guild cope because basically we don't suck. And yes our raid assembly times generally coincide with the feeding time for the West Coast. It just takes common sense, on both sides. I'm not getting why this got so massive other than that parenting makes everyone a loudmouthed know it all.
