Serious bidness.
OK, I've used my time machine, a notepad, and some crayons and I think I've finally figured it out.

Fanfic writer [info]glossing answers a post about flames. This offends some people somewhere, so she posts an apology of sorts in her journal. Folks flip their shit, seemingly because she is really the devil incarnate, or at least a poopyhead. And she used the word "comprador" in a sentence once, thereby insulting all Asians everywhere. And then there were flaming cunts and defriendings and Switzerland.

Or something.

Why are people getting on [info]julia_here's case for saying she doesn't want to get involved?

Three days later, a shitstorm erupted, apparently because I (mis)quoted one of the flames and, I assume, the author of that flame wanted credit for it, or wanted me to acknowledge that I am, in fact, worse than a flaming cunt, or something.

Sadly, something like this has happened to me before. People always think you're talking about them, and they think you were misquoting rather than exaggerating and/or summing up.

So the American Heritage Dictionary defines "comprador" as- 1. An intermediary; a go-between. 2. A native-born agent in China and certain other Asian countries formerly employed by a foreign business to serve as a collaborator or intermediary in commercial transactions.

...Someone wanna explain how that's an insult? I'm sure there's some kind of cultural context (and I know fuck-all about Chinese culture) I'm missing here, but Google wasn't really helpful and I'm genuinely curious.

The story, from what I've gleaned from my flist and previous wanks, is that Glossing is a prolific serial backstabber via email, IM and f-lock (thus cannot be outed in the traditional ways), so everyone who's been a target can only speak in vagaries about the actual problems had, and are currently having, as Ms. Glossing is fond of thinly veiled insults that she denies are insults while they refute her denials with claims that these are, yes, actual - and quite vicious - insults.

*wipes brow*

Me? I say they should put up a page with a map, timeline and copies of the actual wanky correspondence because I'm old and easily bored confused. Because those must have been *some* IM conversations ...

And that would make things look a lot less like far too much head space is being leased for way too little ...

There's a person in a certain fandom who was always getting in snarky references to me, which I couldn't retaliate over because the whole thing stemmed from a very private turn of events (and no, it's not Ataniell. That was all very public). These references furthermore were unclear to anyone who didn't know the history.

Now, I realize that instead of ignoring said person, I should start fighting it out obliquely over on LJ. Well, I guess I'm off to start flaming in semaphore and smoke signals.

Okay, I think I get it.

Glossing said a racial slur several times, like in a fic and then on LJ (then deleted it in her userinfo), tried to break up swmbo and violetsomethingorother's friendship, kissed ass like no tomorrow, whined about somebody stalking her, played the victim too many times, yadda yadda yadda. End result, her flist got duped, manipulated and hurt (and 'glossed,' hee hee hee) - but they're not going to take it - oh, they're not going take it - yeah, they're not going to take it anymooooore!

And lo, there was a fandom split: who's on Gloss's side and who isn't. And the flaming definition wank was just the latter side of the fandom saying, DUDE WE HATE YOU SO MUCH SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM YOU ARE A CON ARTIST AND A MEANIE GO DIE SOMEWHERE.

And FW = fandom police. Lather, rinse, repeat.
