Won't someone think of the baby seals? They think of you... naked.
Ganked off of a mouse from [info]wank_report.

So apparently, Morrissey has cancelled his Canadian tour dates in order to protest the clubbing of baby seals. His statement includes this delightfully Godwin-tastic gem:

The Canadian Prime Minister also states that the slaughter is necessary because it provides jobs for local communities, but this is an ignorant reason for allowing such barbaric and cruel slaughter of beings that are denied life simply because somebody somewhere might want to wear their skin.
Construction of German gas chambers also provided work for someone - this is not a moral or sound reason for allowing suffering.
If you can, please boycott Canadian goods. It WILL make a difference. As things stand, Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation.

The real fun doesn't begin, however, until someone posts about it in [info]morrissey_daily. Some agree with him, some disagree, some express regret about not being able to buy a baby seal sandwich before the show. Still others ask, "Can't we all just get along?" (Answer: No. No, we cannot.)

Because its absolutely the fault of his many 14, 15, 16, and 17 year old fans who cannot vote at all, that the government here allows the tradition to continue.

Now hes punishing them!

Nevermind that most of Canada actually understands the fact that theres a need for it, and really, what would people rather see, baby seals being ripped apart by polar bears and their entrails being left all over to rot; or a controlled culling of the population which at least provides some fur to the rich people without consciences who want to wear it.

The baby seals are going to die either way. Why not make some $ and save some other animals from becoming furs, eh?

((and who cares that many of morissey's fans are probably too anti-government to vote at all, or if they did, most likely voted NDP which is a general wasted vote here!))

Ugh. I'm a liberal and opposed to *real* animal cruelty and exploitation but I really hate bleeding heart celebs who protest something like this when they have no awareness of the cultural and economic tradition behind it. STFU, Morrissey and Paul McCartney and Brigitte Bardot. STFU a LOT.

Here's a good editorial on the issue, although my bias here is clear so anyone who disagrees probably won't agree with the author.

You know, America does technically the same thing--why else is there deer hunting season? To help control the deer population. And yet how many people do you hear crying out over the loss of Bambi? Hardly anyone.

It's called population control, people. You only whine because the baby seals look like this.

And boycotting Canada is just dumb. America kills its fair share of animals. Plus, Canada supplies a good deal of our oil. I'd like to see anyone go without that for a while.

Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation.

Leaving aside everything else wrong with that statement, I just want to ask how we can both be the cxruelest and most self-serving. Only one can hold that title! I say we hold a cruelty-off: we'll bring seal clubbers, China can bring executionists, fight for the death, it's on!

Of course, no one bothers to tell him that baby seals hunting has been banned since 1987?
