The House Fandom Backlash
Moved from clairvoyantwank
Okay, so for those who aren't fans of House MD there is an ongoing discussion on the sexuality of two of the leads, House and Wilson. Recently, Wilson came to stay with House after his wife filed for divorce. Cue the shipping rants!
It starts with this post-

Send in the wankage!

brainbrimstone: Thanks. I appreciate this. There isn't enough of a backlash on slash.
descrime: Why does there need to be a backlash against slash? I mean, it's not like it hurts you in any way. Slashers are not going to break into your apartment and force you to stare at the screen and read 10,000 stories of House and Wilson getting it on. If you don't like it, just don't read it.
I don't undertand why people have such a problem when other people express their support for House/Wilson. Would you be saying the same thing in a House/Cameron discussion, wanting to know why there isn't enough backlash against het pairings?
cagedwriter61: To me, it's not about the slash so much as it is about sexualization of a good friendship. If you enjoy slash, then indulge. Everyone should do what they want.
But it's just sad to be that at least in the fanfiction world, there is so much slashing of characters and so very little support of the original friendships, if they exist. And to me, House and Wilson have such a rare and wonderful relationship -- though that doesn't mean healthy/perfect -- that the over-abundance of slash in fanon is just a little bit disappointing when there isn't enough friendship/platonic love support to balance it out.
With House/Cam? The friendship aspect isn't there to sexualize. If they did have a wonderful platonic friendship, then I would also want more support of that, especially since platonic male/female friendships are another rare thing. But they don't have what House and Wilson has. It's a little different, in my perspective.
thespire:House's fixation on Cuddy's cleavage and his romance with Sela Ward's character only prove that he likes women--not that he dislikes men. Do bisexual people not exist anymore or something?
Which is the point of the whole discussion, at least for me. Personally, I could get behind either the friendship or a queer relationship. But what I don't understand, or to be more specific, what rubs me the wrong way is this irritation with characters we believe to be straight being interpreted as queer. I don't like the way you're insinuating that we're 'turning things homosexual,' because, guess what? You're not "straight until proven queer." (And if you think that's how we should interpret characters and people, that's your own personal stance, not 'the right way' to interpret canon.)
Unless a character comes out and says, "I am not gay," it seems heterosexist to me to assume that he is: a) straight, or b) only straight. Which is what you're doing with Harry Potter, imo, because all the characters in HP who get slashed do not all have corresponding straight crushes and relationships. And to me that suggests that when a character's sexuality is undefined, you're automatically believing that they're straight, and any attempts to suggest otherwise are 'turning' them gay. This could be Brokeback Hospital until the writers show us otherwise.
All wank in the House fandom boils down to pairings. Me, I think House/House's right hand is the only way to ship.
P.S. While I realize that a lot of this is fairly polite it's still wanky when you get three FOUR posts on the same thing in the span of only a few days. First, one with a poll on would we like to see House/Wilson become canon. Then, we have another post about fanon becoming canon. On the heels of that post we get another post questioning House/Wilson. Said post gets something like 161 comments last time I checked with a lot of re-hashing of the same things.
The bigger your fandom gets, the higher your chances of being reported are. HP fans could write a book on that.
The Other Two Posts Regarding House/Wilson (if you're interested...) The Poll http://community.livejournal.com/house_md/864692.html And the most recent post on it http://community.livejournal.com/house_md/869779.html
And I don't get this convo. A perfectly reasonable offer is made but it gets turned down. What the heck are people disagreeing on then??? http://community.livejournal.com/house_md/869779.html?thread=18970771#t18970771
