On the planet you come from, this may be discussion, I admit. On my planet, it's wank.
Pointed to me by my roommate:

So, some girl post to BRPS saying that "Harry Potter journal based roleplaying = bad rping"

A lot of people disagree, saying "If that's your preference, cool, but it's not BAD." People make good and bad points on both sides.

She says everyone's wrong. Snarkily. Particularly when they have good points. And when people get snarky back, she whines about being "flame baited."

She demands logical explainations and when given them complains that it's not enough (Because, you know, everything make perfect, logical sense in Harry Potter, and nothing is excused as "magic") because Wizards have no REAL reason to keep and develop journals. Like most of us do?

And appear to have a sock puppet named tabari_avaren, or maybe just some one who follows her around being her yes person. I'm not sure.

I think raisplace summarizes everything nicely.

Edit: Sorry about the HTML.

That's not magic in the Harry Potter books. Just highly advanced string theory.

I think the people saying how bad the magical journals are have not ever looked very closely at such RPGs. There are [journal posts] and [action posts] and the great, great advantage of this over forums is that a) multiple mood icons, hello, and b) there's no "You have to have three paragraphs in each post you make" because, hello, that's the point of comments, they can be short.

Yeah, to me it seemed like they looked at one journal system and was like "That it, they all suck!"

They also seemed to miss friend locked post, the fact that most people don't pretend thier charactre reads EVERYONE'S journal, etc...

....Okay. LEt's look for a minute at the canon.

Book 1) There is a mirror that reflects whatever you desire most. There is also a rock that can grant eternal life, and a giant chessboard that can very-near kill you.

Book 2) There is a magic journal. There is also a flying car with a mind of its own, and a tree that can wallop you senseless.

Book 3) There is a ghostlike creature that can make you relive your worst fears.

Book 4) There is something called a "portkey" that can warp you from one place to another just by touching it. There is also a ship that appears out of nowhere in the lake and a flying carriage that fits hundreds of girls inside. Then there's a bowl that you can put your memories into, and by leaning far enough over, you can become a spectator to the past.

Book 5) Department of Mysteries. Also, a quill that can carve words into your skin as you're writing on paper. And those invisible horses, anyone?

Not touching Book 6, because it easily has ten times as much as any other book.

And we're saying "magical journals" are nonsensical?

Wizards can communicate without these sodding journals. It's called firecalling, owls, howlers, etc.

Yeah but they aren't very fast or reliable. Maybe magical journals are just what wizards need. I can think of how much less trouble it would have been for Harry and Co. if they had magical instant text messaging journals instead:

To Dumbledore's Journal:

Pick up your journal, Headmaster! COME BACK! SNAPE IS TRYING TO GET THE STONE TONIGHT! kthnx.

Harry

or

To Sirius' Journal:

Were you kidnapped by Voldemort? Hermione thinks you weren't but I think you were! Reply to this within 2 minutes or I'm coming to save you!

Harry

Don't mind me, it's late.

...I don't really do/read RPG, but I know I only like journal RPGs. None of that "He/She/I walks to the door, and looks out. Draco is there, grinning" for me...but the things I don't like are not always bad. Usually, yeah, but not always.

(Nocturne Alley wasn't bad...and Malory Towers was quite sweet and IIRC THEY WERE BOTH JOURNAL BASED STFU H8RS)

And here I thought I'd never be in a wank that got fandom_wanked. I feel dirty now.
