Entry tags:community: fanficrants, homophobia, slash

Ah, [info]fanficrants what would I do without thee? :D

writinchica2k asks if G-rated slash is an oxymoron and says she'd bump a story's rating up a notch or two just on the homosexuality quotient alone.

At first the responses are innocent enough... but then suddenly the splooge hits the FAN!! Included are fancy reductio ad absurdum arguments and various yellings of "Bigot!" and "Hypocrite!"

The, uh, debate does calm down on page two and returns to something a little more logical. But the wankage and splooge are on page one ^_^

ETA: Dude, I'm staying the hell out of this debate... since my comment in the original thread is one of the things being wanked upon (no, I'm not [info]arromdee but one of my statements apparently triggered some pretty good wank anyway) ¬¬ *feels quite foolish now for having failed her first wank so miserably*

OP was the biggest wank of them all, so "suddenly the splooge hits the fan" is misstating it a bit.

That's giving me headaches. Is the original post a team effort of two people who don't know each other?

The reactions are pretty much adequate.

Fun-ness! While those who flamed were a bit over the line, I rather agree with their overall point--it IS hypocritical and bigoted to up the rating for a kind of relationship that is no more sexual than a het fluffy love.

OT: ZOMGICONLOVE!!!!!111 I HEART your icon!!!

Really not seeing all that much to get excited about here. Sure there are a few annoyed retorts, but nothing that really deserves the term wank. Most of what you linked to was at the most mildly annoyed counterargument.

Is it weird that even if there was no language/violence/innuendo and it was sweet and innocent enough that one could change the species and it'd be human/human, I'd automatically bump it to PG because one of the characters has tentacles?

I really don't see any wank going on. It was a hypocritical statement. So now what, sarcastic remarks and pointing out the obvious equals wank? The way I see it, this strays extremely close to the gay rights and double-standard depictions of gays in media, so people have every right to be offended and as snarky as they damn well please.

I predict far more wank will come from the "slash is inherently porn" response on the second page.

Of course, I'm one of those people who goes along with rating because it's what is done... but really? Putting ratings on stories is still just weird.

I've seen stories labelled 'slash' that comprised wholly of totally innocuous conversations (of the "what shall we have for tea?" variety) between two characters who in other stories would be At It Like Rabbits. I maintain that these are not slash because nothing slashy happens, but I guess the slash is in the mind of the author and that somewhere after the end of the conversation they'll rip one another's clothes off and leap into bed - only she doesn't tell us that bit.

It depends who you're doing the labelling for, I suppose. Whilst I do agree that 'shielding' a child from any knowledge of homosexuality is not a viable option, I also think that it's up to the parents what they do or don't expose their kids to. We (as fan readers/writers) just can't go around bludgeoning other people's kids with the facts of life, whether or not we feel it would be in their best interests to know them. With that in mind, it's the parents who should be doing the majority of the filtering, IMHO.

Not touching the plagiarism question with a disinfected bargepole, but the person with the 'Nemi' icon gets several million points out of ten for style. Now, where are my old copies of the Metro???

I used to label all my slash stories PG and up, just to avoid the people who'd flame me for labelling them G. Then I stopped because I was tired of avoiding assholes. Curiously, I stopped getting flames on my slash stories after that.

Then again, I also labeled my crossbreeding shipfics as G, until the story got more mature, so I may have a different view of kid-friendly than most people.

There's a difference between being squicked by something and being prejudiced against it. The warning is for the people who would be squicked, including kids, just like you'd put a PG rating on a story which contained very scary scenes, or descriptions of open-heart surgery, and the fact is that slash squicks a lot more people than het.

Yeah. You squick me, arromdee, so could you please put a warning saying "LOOK OUT, DICKHEAD ALERT!" above every comment you make?

I think the interracial relationship analogy was rather apt, actually. People are still astonishingly offended by that sort of thing.

If you ask me, giving a story a higher rating based on slash alone is misleading. What if someone clicks on an R-rated story hoping for porn and finds out it's just a story about two men kissing and holding hands with all their clothes on? Think of the porn fans!

G-rated slash is like nonalcoholic beer. There's just no point, you're missing the best part.

Baised much? The OP's wankier than life post is barely mentioned while everyone who was discussing it (and I don't see the cries of "Hypocrite and "Bigot" like you said, and the OP asked HERSELF is she was hypocrite, BTW) is condemnd as splooge. Someone needs to brush up on her reading comprehension and stop trying to grudge wank.

Seeing as how I think rating fics at all is idiotic and pandering, to me the whole question is moot. Ratings are designed to save lazy people the time or trouble to find things out for themselves, and thus I detest them. The only reason I use them is to stop the OMGYOUMADEMEREADPORRRRNNNNN! bitching that inevitably crops up.

Gay isn't dirtier than het, but then again, my opinion is mine, not everybody else's. And ratings are less an expression of what the author thinks than what she believes the reader might think. That's why they were developed for movies, that's why fic authors adopted them, and that's why ratings wank happens - because readers want things spoon-fed to them.

(Yes, I know the constant claims: I'm to busy to waste time! I have a right not to be offended! My poor virgin eyes! *eyeroll*)

The comments were pretty tame, considering the wankiness of the OP and the fact that it's, y'know, fanficrants.
