the wank is strong in this one
I never, ever thought I'd see the day in which I found myself agreeing with Lee Goldberg on any matter pertaining to fanfiction. Over on his blog, he decries the stupidity of one Lori Jareo, who self-published her Star Wars fanfiction and has it listed for sale on Amazon.com

Elsewhere in the blogosphere, John Scalzi also boggles and declares her the winner of the 2006 Stupidest Fanfiction Writer Award.

To bear witness to the true depths of Lori Jareo's obliviousness, check out her author interview on her website

I am totally stoked to discover this precedent: as long as only my friends and family know that I'm selling my work to everybody on the internet, I can completely contravene copyright laws!

'Cause damn. That is SWEET news. I can get my Pyramid Head erotic epic published now and ain't nobody can do shit.

but what i really want to say is, i ♥ your Tira icon.

Wow. Someone must never, ever read/watch/listen to the news. It sounds to me like she thought that in the great big world of Amazon.com, nobody would notice one teeny little fanfic for sale.

Lori Jareo needs to learn to never underestimate the power of the following:

1)Ficcers
2)Star Wars fans
3)IP lawyers.

Wait, what? I understand the desire to have the book you wrote in actual book format, I can see how you might give copies to friends and relatives - but listing it on Amazon? What the hell?

I will say that it's a pretty cover she's got, though.

From John Scalzi's blog: ...I don't think being a fan means you suddenly have a license to be stupid.

He hasn't been around much, has he? The evidence would tend to indicate otherwise.

And the 'author' had a launch for her 'apocryphal novel'? Wow. The ego, it is mind boggling.

Ok so she owns the POD publishing company that published her book (vanity vanity publishing there's probably a joke in there somewhere). While that explains how she managed to get it published I'm still WTF-ing over how she can be a book publisher/editor and still not know anything about copyright.

It says a little too much about me as a Star Wars fan that I'm just as outraged that she hasn't even got the continuity right. The Republic was only 1000 years old? And where did the Sith Empire go?

And ohmygod, Luke and Leia's cousins? There's space for them in continuity, sure, but Mary Sues Mary Sues Mary Sues!

How could this woman work in any part of the writing industry and not know about copyright laws? How did she complete a degree without getting slammed for plagiarism?

I wish so much that I could see how Lucas/Lucasfils reps react when they see them. "Well, this is new."

I know that there's a lot of Star Wars novels out there already. I haven't actually read any of them, mind you, but they're all a lot longer than the paperback novelizations of the first three films. I wonder if she could have possibly gotten permission to publish in the first place? Would've saved her a lot of wank. It's been around since '99 (which must show how popular it is in the first place) so what's another year to hear back from the rightholders?

God, the stupidity of some people...this chick has single-handedly given all the POD people a bad name.

What really sucks about all this is that amazon.com had just launched a program so that POD authors could sell their books in 5-10,000 word chunks for .49 cents a download. POD/self-published authors, like me, were excited because it was to represent a chance to gain world-wide attention to our own novels.

I have a feeling that's going "buh-bye" after this.

Lee Goldberg:

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get to work on my self-published sequel to THE DAVINCI CODE. I don't think Dan Brown or Simon & Schuster will mind.

Well, actually, if you leave out the OCs, I don't see why the rest of the ideas on which the Da Vinci doc is based wouldn't be available to any writer. Da Vinci, the Louvre museum, Mary Magdalene, the Priory of Sion, the Opus Dei, the idea of the Christ having had children? Do not belong to Dan Brown, thank you very much.

On the other hand, Jareo's little stunt? Whoa.

Hell, turn that around and it's still a fun wank.

I mean, I know how much *my* friends & fam just LOVE it when I offer them an ultra-exclusive chance to read my Stephen King-length fanfic, and then present them with a bill.

Boy, F_W is sure giving my Brennan icon a workout these days...

tl;dr overview of the novel
(Anonymous)
2006-04-21 03:02 pm UTC (link)
*downloads .pdf file*

Lessee... transcription of the movie, blah blah... that's a lot of exposition! Exposition, exposition...

“Your kind are duplicitous traitors.” He stepped toward her. (No comment.)

Tarkin's first name is Wilhuff, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Moff_Tarkin) not Niall.

The electro-pneumatics inside his (Vader's) helmet were as enervating as its sharp outer angles.

If you're gonna talk about enervating, cut the goddamn exposition. And this Ryoo Naberrie shouldn't be more careful with a lightsaber?

Exposition, exposition... what have I told you about playing with lightsabers young miss? How much more exposition can this thing have? The escape from the Death Star is awfully boring.

Ryoo silently thanked the gods for her deliverance from the Death Star. Leia did the same.

Wow, both Naboo and Alderaan have easily disposable deities who hear prayers but never demand any kind of cult.

Boring dialogue, boring exposition.

There are still 90 pages left?? Geez, I'm skipping a lot of this.

This woman was so much like her famous aunt, both in body and in
spirit. Leia felt an uplift in conidence.

And she knows this (and cares) because she never met her. Much like selling a book in Amazon isn't making profit of it.

Offing Obi-Wan doesn't gives you right to make this gal Ryoo call Vader "Anakin". You're ignoring the duality of the character.

Also? Luke could blow up the Death Star because he was using the Force. Here's way too easy. And boring!

I give this thing a B(oring)+

akusai @ LJ
