FFR Wankalypse
The Ivorytower posts her thoughts on yaoi on FFR. The problem? She says she likes yaoi because she doesn't like any of the female characters. At first she starts getting words, internets, and cookies and stuff, but then people start going "Homie
say what?!"

BONUS: It seems to have spawned! These threads aren't wanky, but who doesn't love wankspawn (if there's any I missed, let me know)?

The inspiration behind it all? Knowing FFR, I'm REALLY surprised this thread wasn't wanky.

Somebody else's thoughts.

No bashing!

ETA: The genfic one wasn't related after all, so I removed it. But we get this snarking of the whole wank on Shipwar as a consolation prize!

I'd say that somebody should make a post parodying the whole thing on shipwar, and someone really should anyway, but at this point it's kind of parodying itself.

I'm starting to think FFR has its own irregular period, but instead of leaking blood out of its crotch it leaks rants regarding yaoi, yuri, het, romance, gen, and assorted other things versus each other in different combinations in one big tidal wave of "arrrrgh".

Hmm... I'm in two of those threads. Considering how inconsistent I am about actually commenting, this proves that I've been spending far too much time at FFR lately.

*glances around furtively* At least I don't think *I* was being all that wanky...

There's been a lot of anti-yaoi and anti-romance sentiment kicking around lately.

Er, where?

I haven't noticed many anti-yaoi rants on FFR lately, but I really haven't been paying close attention either.

The vast majority of rants lately are more '_____ fandom please start existing' and the usual ones about spelling, grammar, and Mary Sues.

It's no end of amusing to watch ffr go back and forth on itself over the course of a few hours. "We need more genfic!" "Stop hating on shipfic, guys!" "I'll bash female characters if I want to!" "Stop bashing female characters or I bash YOU!" "Fandom X needs more fic!" "Why is there so much terribly Fandom X fic?" "Stop warping the canon, people!" "Can't you people think of anything to do in fandom that hasn't been done 12587127 times already?"

It's like watching a snake eating its tail. Or maybe a whole host of snakes eating each other's tails.

"She says she likes yaoi because she doesn't like any of the female characters."
Interestingly, this one also popped up yesterday in a thread on a forum I frequent (sadly it's not in English so I don't think it'd do any good to link it). More specifically, the conversation went like this:

Ms. Tl;dr: "As for me, of all the genres I know, yaoi has the strongest emotions, most burning passions, and without them turning into cheesy melodrama (at least in the better stories). I've seen very few stories about heterosexual relationships that have such passion as yaoi stories."

Ms. Enthusiastic Fangirl: "Yeah... het stories always have a whiny, annoying female lead."

...yeah. Right. Okay.

Erm. Wow, I'm on Fandom Wank. (I'm the "More thoughts, wiht genfic included!" poster). In my defense, my post wasn't inspired by the original wank with the ivorytower, it was inspired by the comments on a different post where some people said gen "actually had plot and characterization" as opposed to fics with ships in them.

I am REALLY beginning to dislike all these 'why I like yaoi/slash' essay things. Especially if it's all academic and people start ANALYSING why women like the gaysex.

Why I like and read and write slash?

Same reason as to why I like and read and write fanfic in general.

BECAUSE IT IS FUN, PEOPLE! IT'S FUN!

It only these essay writing people could spend less time writing boring tl;dr essays and more time writing the hawt pr0n.

Lady, I honestly couldn't care less. You have fun fapping to what you wanna fap to. If you feel oppressed, remember that there are some people out there who think porn of any type is dirty - so even your generic het live-action porn-watchers are sneered at by someone. It's no reason to get up on a high horse.

I loved the sob story about her OMG!intolerant boyfriend. I admit the whole "dragging yaoi fangirls into a swamp" idea has some merit, and I AM one. Also, her inability to distinguish slapstick from real-life abuse disturbs me, as does her seemingly impossible standards for female characters.

If someone doesn't like female characters then they don't, and I really don't care, but they shouldn't expect everyone else to sit back and nod and be supportive.

I love female characters and that's why yaoi often doesn't appeal to me at all.

Isn't there somewhere else for people to go if they want to complain about gender politics as they pertain to slash fiction?

I think what's the most disturbing are the amount of people agreeing with her because of her sympathy-snagging buzzwords. Because trust me, if she'd said "I love yaoi because girls are useless," she would've gotten rightfully bitchslapped. I don't care how you slice it; justifying your love of one thing through a hatred of something else is fucking moronic.

Plus, I'd like to know where this Magical Land of Intarweb Oppression is where yaoi fans are collectively kicked around like small puppies because they like cute boys boffing. Because in my experience, it does not exist.
