Whoa. I didn't know anyone had balls like this!
EDIT: I didn't realize there was another wank about this topic until after I'd hit the submit button and this went into the fandom_wank queue. By then I couldn't delete it because it was in the approval queue. Sorry everyone!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1933456027/qid=1123612981/sr=2-/103-6073320-0586259

Someone decided she didn't like how George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars movie, so she decided to rewrite "Star Wars: A New Hope" (and according to the reviews, did so very poorly) and decided to sell it on Amazon!

The reviews are quite the panoply... ranging from "OMG PLAGIARIZM!!1!" to "HAY WTF?! COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!" to "Not only is this illegal, it's SHITTY!" I'm even more amused by the lack of grammar and spelling of the reviewers than I am at the thought of this bitch Lori Jareo getting her ass handed to her by Lucas's attorneys (hey, maybe she's got herself one of them intarweb lawyers!)

I want to know why Amazon is allowing this in the first place! I mean, one bloody glance at the entry page on Amazon was all I needed to know exactly what this is -- without even reading a single actual paragraph of the "book"!

This isn't just plagiarism -- it's bloody copyright infringement on arguably the largest fiction franchise out there! (Star Wars ranks right up there with Lord of the Rings, but I don't know if it's bigger than LOTR, just cuz LOTR has some twenty or thirty years on Star Wars).

Well, methinks George Lucas is gonna hafta SMACK A BITCH soon. Holy shit.... exploding splooge!

*sits back to watch the wank unfold*

Speaking of violating copyrights, have you guys seen this:
http://www.agentwithstyle.com/harrypot.htm ??
Apparently [info]psychic_serpent is selling her HP fanfic trilogy there!
And wait, there is more, you can get her fanfic in audio book too:

My mind boggles at this. Not so much that some fan would try and sell off their fanfic (that's just mildly 'wtf, spot making everyone else look bad'), but that anyone would pay money; real, had-to-work-to-get-it money! for a fanfic. They even cost more than the original HP-books.

....damn, I wish I had a photo of my paperback Japanese translation of Cybele's If You Are Prepared.

Of course, the whole copyright issue is a little different in Japan, but people are indeed willing to pay money for fanfic... I bought it myself just because it was such a novelty, LOL, but I must say, if it was possible to do over here without getting one's pants sued off, it would sure be nice to have versions of my favorite fics I could slip in my purse for a boring day. </wishful thinking>

I understand (from talking to people much, much older than myself, of course), that in the Before Time, most everyone had to buy fanfic because of the cost of mimeo/photocopying and postage. There are still decent reasons for paying, including to get purty illustrations or nice pseudo-binding for your shelf.

But $80 for something that's already available free on the Net? Only if it's bound in Vosges chocolate and nude Alan Rickman photos.

Okay, I know you and [info]flyingphoenix et al. are trying to show us that there are H/G wankers, but that whole site is full of zines. Look at it.

She also didn't have it vanity-published and listed on Amazon.

So what?
Still she is making money from characters that are not her own, i.e. copyright violation.
The whole site is in copyright violation, sure, so [info]psychic_serpent is not alone, but that doesn't make her actions right.

Wikipedia tells me that fanzines are okay because they only cost enough to defray production costs. People have been making zines for a very long time. I don't know how much it costs to print her fics (I think they're pretty long, aren't they?), but she's most likely not making money off it if a zine publisher is in charge.

comments all the time trying to compair herself to Rowling

I wouldn't know, as I haven't seen this, but that *could* be wankable, depending on how she does it.

putting examples of her fics in canon debates

Again, I don't know how she did that - it could be wanky, but it could also not be, depending on how she did it. But that could definitely also be wanky.

having an audio book

Yeeeeah, I dunno. It's not like she paid people to make it. If I had a room to myself here I'd have joined in the audiobook project for whoever was organizing it. It's fun. Going overboard and doing crazy things is part of fandom. There's more to it than arguing over ships.

Vain? Yes, absolutely.

Agentwithstyle has been around as a zine publisher for a long time. I've bought a zine or two from them in my time in another fandom. So, strictly speaking it's not 'self published', per se. Possibly vanity publishing, however.

Zines aren't sold for profit, supposedly. The price is simply covers the cost of printing, binding, etc., so it's a whole different thing from self-publishing and offering it on Amazon, etc. But there's no way I'd pay that much for fanfic. Ever. Geez. My experience with zines hasn't been all that great. The stories in the last zine I bought were really crappy.

The only way I compare myself to Rowling is to acknowledge that she knows everything that's going to happen and I don't, which is why I prefer her work to my full-of-guesswork stuff. Frankly, it offends me when readers tell me that they prefer my work to hers because I DON'T. I prefer canon and don't think I've done a better job than JKR of writing Harry's fifth and sixth years. I've said this in many, many places. Stop making things up.

My readers instigated the audiobook, created it and host it. I had nothing to do with that except for saying, 'Go ahead, if you like,' when they asked whether they could do it. You strike me not as vain but as talking when you know absolutely nothing about what you're talking about. Which is worse?

Not even at the selling, but why does this cost $50? For something that's available online for free anyway?

[info]janegraddell

Believe it or not, not everyone has internet access. Plus, I know several people who prefer to buy zines rather than wade through the megatons of crap on the internet. And some zines are very nicely put together, with beautiful art and layout that fans are willing to shell out money for.

And, too, there's just the habit of some 30+ years of buying zines. A lot of fans have built up relationships with editors over the years, and are willing to pay for zines just because they trust the editor to choose good stories.

But I do agree that some of the prices for zines are getting ridiculous, to the point that I rarely, rarely buy new zines anymore because I simply can't afford it. The idea is that zine publishers only charge enough to cover their costs, but some of them appear to be charging their readers for air breathed and calories expended. And frankly, sometimes the quality control is so bad that you might as well dive into fanfiction.net and take your chances.

I can't imagine there's many people who don't have internet access/a friend willing to print stuff out for them and $50 to drop on somebody's fan-novel.

Increased price for the fact that you're doing a small number of copies - then take away the profit margin should get you about a similar price to a commercial book of the same sort. Maybe a little more depending on format. Lulu.com, for example, would print a 300 page book, B&W, for about $10.50. Add a couple bucks for shipping, maybe a bit more because she has a couple of colour illustrations in there or something and to cover incidentals. Say $20 max including the shipping. If this is just about covering costs, where the fuck is the extra $30 or so she's charging coming from?

I don't have any problem with zines because I get that the quantity is generally so small and the method of distribution usually localised to selling at cons or via a fandom mailing list or however; it's not really going to be a problem for anybody's copyright. I do think that a) the prices being charged here are way more than 'covering costs', and b) that advertising and actually SELLING same on a googleable website is a very bad idea.

Should JKR's lawyers run across this or something similar, I don't think that they would stop to consider the long fandom history of zines; they'd see something which looks just like the bootleg Chinese/Russian etc 'Harry Potter & The X' novels they've been trying to stamp out and slap it with a form-letter C&D so fast the envelope would suffer relativistic effects.

As for the audiobook, those files are freely available online, just like the fic files. They are the work of a wonderful actor who is doing this out of the goodness of his heart; no money is being made on those either.

Zines have been around for decades, and they're indeed done out of the goodness of people's hearts, or rather their love for things fannish. They're dying out because of the internet, but some of the zines are quite respected for their track record in not making money out of it.

A lot of published authors today got their starts in zines. Lois McMaster Bujold, for example, published and wrote in a Star Trek zine and now she's a best selling author. So sci-fi and fantasy authors are often quite tolerant of the zines.
