Fic archiving is SERIOUS BUSINESS
Over at [info]wranglers, one of LJ's Brokeback Mountain communities, [info]supersolenoids posts about creating a fic archive for the fandom. Seems simple enough, right?

WRONG.

The kerfuffle also continues here.

Why must everything involve "rights"? Because without them we have no say in what is done with our creations. What are people afraid of? People are afraid of having their work stolen, miscredited, plagiarized, altered... it has happened before in fandom, and it will most certainly happen again.

Say the people righting FANFICTION, you know, stealing someone else's characters and setting, and VIOLATING COPYRIGHT?

I love the hypocrisy.

Maybe they were just creeped out by her excessive use of the word "Darling" and "love" with total strangers.

Supersolenoids is ... incredibly irritating. I do understand that copyright laws make fic writers shrieking about protection or whatever somewhat ironic, but DARLING, interwebs or no, writers probably srsly appreciate knowing where the hell their stuff goes, especially because of copyright laws. One of my fandoms has had a few mass linkings of passages from fic sans permission, and ... you know, it's just nice to have a chance to be able to specify how much you want your shit whored about on teh_webz.

Especially when you're writing the RPS gay porn and such. I mean really, at least let me know so I can clarify that I'm not as batshit insane as my stuff might make me out to be.

Dear god. It's all tl;dr to me.

As a matter of fact, nothing has been made yet (as for my site), right because I wanted it all to be set and clear before going on. I liked the controversy because it's another way of learning about people: the hard way, maybe, but sometimes something really good can come out of quarrels and fights (if they were intended so, anyway.

Translated = "DARLING, I'm not really stupid or dense, I'm just controversial, so it's okay."?

I have seen this cause people's sites to be shut down for copyright infringement, credit notwithstanding.

Wait... haven't we had two recent wanks about this VERY thing? I thought it had beaten into the ground that fanfic, by it's very nature, is copyright infringement- it's just that most creators ignore it so long as no one is profiting off of it.

Silly fans- copyrights are for original stories!

Honestly? I'd be pissed if I found my work floating around without my permission. Mostly because I don't KNOW of most archives (the only one I'm really familiar with is the Potter Slash Archive, and that's only because I'm archived there), so the odds of my finding my stories someplace I'd never heard of some Tuesday afternoon five years after I'd forgotten about fandom are high. Five years from now, who knows what I'll be doing? I may not want my work up at an archive, or on the web at all, and if the moderator has gone AWOL. . . . It's not a good situation for the mod or for the authors: the authors get upset that their work has been reposted without permission and the moderators get to deal with the anger. Really, it works out well for no one.

Yeah, fan fiction isn't original work. But it's still shitty to copy that work and post it on another site without so much as a 'how do you do?' If an author's contact info changes and he/she is archived without knowledge and consent, they may be getting e-mails and comments without knowing it. If the moderator of the archive has old info and wants to get in touch with the author to clear that up, the mod may be unable to if they'd never asked to kept in the loop in the first place. I can imagine, with ease, a situation in which someone's work is archived, that someone deletes his/her LJ and changes e-mails, and the site mod still supplies broken links. Which, while not an OMG GREAT TRAGEDY, kind of sucks for anyone who wants to find that author, and it sucks for the author, especially if he/she wanted their work off the web.

As for linking to all the authors' personal LJs ... yeah, it's a nice thought, but in my experience, most mods need a team of staffers to keep a full archive running and updating frequently, and those who go it alone can update as scheduled for a little while before having to slow down. There's just no way to keep up.

Legal issues aside (which I think are mostly irrelevant, as this seems to be more about fandom courtesy than anything else), it's a bad idea, as all it's going to do is get people pissed at the archive mod when they find their work archived without permission. And, seriously, who wants to deal with that kind of hassle? Fandom has fifty kinds of wank going on at once on a good day; why invite a tidal wave to your house and try to serve it tea?

That layout is a thing of beauty. I think it was created with the sole purpose of making the wank so damn hard to read.

For what I got, [info]supersolenoids thinks it's perfectly ok to archive someone else's work on an archive with credit but without asking the author first? Mmmm... I don't know. I prefer to know where my work is. Even though it's true that without the 'real author' we wouldn't be able to write fics in the first place, without fanfiction writers she/he/it wouldn't have hir archive-

"Why, then? Because maybe, MAYBE, someone is not as genuine in his/her desire to share his/her gift for writing."

There seems to be a bit of culture shock going on there (and here)... I'm pretty sure supersolenoids' first language isn't English, so at least some of the weirdness of his/her comments can be attributed to that, I think. Sometimes people whose first language isn't English and who haven't undergone cultural immersion say things that seem downright creepy.

So many responses, so little time.

So, given your whole life experience, the best you can come up with is 'Okay'?

(Yes, I get it. Yes, I still think it's a moronic response. Stock responses are fun.................or idiotic; you choose!)

This girl is creeeeepy. I posted one fanfic onto Wranglers, I hope she didn't read it.

*checks*

Nope, she didn't.. My story, of course, wasn't even Ennis/Jack and certainly not "stuffed with sex" so it makes sense. My works are off the hook! Phew.

But yeah, what an asshat. The site isn't up anymore so I don't know what the layout looked it.

Wow. The very minute I saw that post I knew there'd be wank and lo and behold there was! I kind of agree with the authors though - I know that it's not their material to begin with but at the same time I can kind of see that if you work hard on something you'd at least like someone to ask before putting up a fic on the site.

Chickadilly on LJ (too lazy to sign into JF - er, actually I can't remember my JF password and am too lazy to look it up!)

Anonymous comment: Congratulations, you've been fandom-wanked :p

supersolenoids: So to speak...yes! ^_^

This is way too amusing. Doesn't have a fucking clue what Anon's referring to but still feels the need to reply.
Maybe someone should link him here? *evil*

I'm just glad I reported this, all anony-mouse like at [info]wank_report when I was too busy to write it up. This has got to be the best troll ever -- I've never encountered another who reminded me so much of '30s and '40s Hollywood glamazons with all the 'dahlink's.

My new favorite part of this, after the eyebleeding layout and pseudo-glam daaaaaaaaaaahlings and the deathless phrasing of stuffed with sex and the cluestick that, yes, it's standard fandom practice to get permission from authors to archive, is Supersolenoids making hirself the asscaps subject line of anon comments. *Sweet*.
