The Slytherin Fandom Is Not Dead
Lots of links here, and I probably left out stuff. Oh well...

A new anonymous journal appears on Eljay: [info]slytherfanatics. Its first entry is titled Yes, Ataniell, Pureblood Prejudice Is Racism and argues that ataniell93 is being illogical about the subject. [info]bookshop/Aja seems to have been the first to post about in public, but she's locked it since. Have no fear, there's a lot of first-reaction wankiness in the comments of the [info]slytherfanatics entry as well.

ataniell93 posts I know about the post in slytherfanatics, and an icon in retaliation. A bit later, she announces she's leaving the fandom.

[info]ajhalluk posts Just when you were thinking the online HP fandom couldn't possibly make a bigger arse of itself if it tried, it unexpectedly turns the other cheek. Condemns [info]slytherfanatics. [info]sistermapie writes a post about Dumbledore but the comments are filled with wank, including a very random Fandom Wank used to be funnier!

Then there's a follow-up post on [info]slytherfanatics Ataniell93 is not racist! But her position isn't conducive to rational argument either.

A.J. Hall writes another rant. Someone called [info]agarttha takes advantage of the general fuss to write a weird rant about how 'One cannot, therefore, go about brandishing puerile ideas of DNA and red blood around.' [info]sistermapie writes a serious essay on the subject, but there is wank in those comments. Our own [info]darkrosetiger has her take here.

A third post on [info]slytherfanatics New standards of Niceness about ataniell93 and [info]theregoesyamum. No reaction yet that I can find.

And, just for variety's sake, wank of the non-is-HP-racist?-sort, Ataniell93 tells threeoranges (whom she recently banned from her LJ) that she's such a Gryffindor on [info]kannaophelia's LJ, and [info]kannaophelia makes a rule'that no one is allowed to accuse anyone else of belonging to a certain Hogwarts house in my lj.'

ETA: WTF????????????? "as a matter of sheer practicality the children probably will in fact be worse off being half- whatever than full- something, so it isn't that the cautious advice is wrong precisely"

Has anyone read this? This makes me feel rather sick here.

The only point of interracial marriages is to inflict suffering on your family for the greater good?

I am so, so, so happy I defriended her now.

Actually, I'm not sure which is worse. The fact someone's talk about their third husband (is it serial marrying or something) or the what was said about the race thing. Wow. So, so glad I live on the HP fringe, and I'm barely hanging on there.

Who would have thought that the point of picking a spouse and making babies is making political statements? I always thought it has to do with things like falling in love or getting along well with someone and sex drive and wishing to procreate and stuff like that.

Now I want to have interracial twins just so that I can call them 'Greater Good' and "Principle Of It'.

I won't jump him/her just because of that, actually. It's common that most parents would be against interracial marriage, not because they have problems with the other race, but because they perceive that the society in general have problems with interracial couples/children. They don't want their child to have the bad experiences that they think the child have if the go on with the interracial marriage, which is why they advise against it.

In a shorter sentence, it's akin to telling your daughter not to marry a poor man because she might live a hard life.

Well, to be fair... - and I'm not saying I agree with this - ... my sister in law is white, living in a predominately white society, and is married to a Japanese man - but he's the one who is concerned about having mixed children. He's not actually trying to propagate prejudices, but he is bowing to them, which is unfortunate. But I can at least understand where he's coming from, even if I don't think he should let that hold him back.

Right. My brother and I are against my sister's marriage, not because they were addicts together and are not exactly a healthy couple, but because he's Hispanic!

Incidentally, their little girl is one of the brightest two-year-olds I've met, and my family adores her. Poor baby, being the family darling. Must be so difficult.

I've been thinking of this today a lot. When I first read it I went o-O but now I have something to say!

It's not a racist statement in the usual way, which is probably why an impeccable liberal-type like she is could make it. She doesn't think there's anything *wrong* with racial intermarriage objectively. That it'll cause genetic failures, or offend God etc. In fact, she thinks people *should* go ahead with interracial marriages for the "theoretical upside" and suffer for the greater good of society.

It's *soft* bigotry. The statement as fact that if you marry outside your ethnic/racial group, your children will be worse off than if you marry inside your group. It's simply a ridiculous statement, and it's an insult to couples who are bringing up children with the implied-if-not-exactly-intended, "You're sacrificing your kids' well-being for the common good of society."

I've a large extended family, and of my numerous first cousins, more than half are a mix of Caucasian-Asian. And no, they are *not* worse off than fair-skinned me for being that mix. Yes, they have to face occasional racism, but Canada is not the Deep South circa 1870. They benefit from the traditions and cultures of both their parents.

Life is risky. Marrying is risky. Having kids is risky. You don't know if you and your family will be better off or not for any choice you make. But there's no probability about it.
