You know what our problem is? Falling standards.
Did you know that LJ users are expected to maintain strict standards of fannish decorum at all time? At least, that's what [info]selenitatis seems to think. When [info]rageprufrock posts on her private journal about the most recent episode of House, [info]selenitatus takes offense at the post's frivolous tone:

While it's hard to object to pure joyous fangirling, I can't help but be truly shocked and frankly a bit disappointed to hear "there's probably another plot and stuff" out of you. I've respected you greatly in the past and was hoping that I would find some of the depth desperately lacking elsewhere here. Not only did I not, but you seem to be validating the shallowness that other, lesser writers are flaunting.

Remember, kids: Your LJ is a valuable public service. And medically-shoddy-yet-highly-entertaining doctor shows are, as always, Serious Business.

And reviewing said shows in one's LJ is also serious business!

So referencing Pablo Neruda is something squeeing fanbrats do? Nice to know. I guess it was the way she didn't specifically say she'd read him in the original.

(Dang, if I ever post about House in my LJ, I'm friendslocking it.)

Oh, good God. I don't know if I have any further comment. Oh, yeah. WTF?

On my journal, I do everything from pompous academic bullshit to memes about which Star Wars character I really am. If they're going to start putting up zoning regulations about what each LJ poster is going to be restricted to, we need to be informed. Am I going to be in the "serious critic" camp? The "fanfic writer" camp? The memes camp? Political bitching camp?

Enquiring minds want to know.

I am strangely proud that my fandom has been wanked again.

My thoughts: It was an unbelievably gay episode, let the girl squee over it for god's sake! There are intelligent (but not too much! oh noes!) discussions in other places. Let the girl express the "OMG MY HEART NEARLY EXPLODED" feelings in *her own* journal.

A BNF is getting trolled by a sockpuppet. Stop the presses!

I will admit the method of trolling was rather ... to paraphrase [info]alibi_factory ... ineffective.

Although telling someone they aren't living up to their imaginary meta potential is fun in theory. Will they forever think "Hey, this Doodlebops meta, it's not really all it should be, is it?"

It can be devastating in the long run, really.

Why do people have to expect everyone to take fandom so seriously? Honestly i don't care if others want to see deep meaning in everything they watch/read/etc but what's wrong with people just - i don't know, mindlessly enjoying it? It is IS entertainment after all. Granted i can get philospophical about fannish things now and then but i can also be a shameless fangirl and i wouldn't presume to judge anyone else on how they enjoy their fandom.

Alllrighty, besides the most obvious point: I'll post whatever the fuck I want on my personal journal and you have the right to not read it let's go to the second most obvious point!

Pru's post isn't JUST "pure joyous fangirling." OK, maybe it lacks, like spread-sheets, flow-charts, and in-depth literary analysis but c'mon! I know we've all actually seen posts that are literally the words: OMG, SQUEEEEE!!!11 And if you've been in fandom longer than five minutes you should be able to tell the difference.

But again, refer to "most obvious point." And remember, with that, a classic fandom maxim: if you want it [it being: analysis, fic, icons, communities, discussions, etc.] stop whining about the lack of "it" and create "it" already!

And this is the reason why only fics, icons and fanart are not friendslocked over my journal.

I like fangirling, at times. I like the squeage about ZOMGSOGAY or ZOMGSOCANON or ZOMGSOBAD, or about a new plot I got, or random bits of BLAGH. If I had to be serious all the time, I think my FList would've flown already.
