Another un-ship-related HP wank!
Menolike makes a post in HP_theories about witches who marry Muggles in which she brings up a few questions. Someone asks her "why is it always a Muggle father and a Witch mother?" Rogueravenclaw replies that the only exception she could think of was Dean Thomas. Menolike asks where she read that, as she didn't remember it in the books, and Faraday replies with a link to the interview.

Menolike REALLY doesn't like it when JK Rowling does interviews.

WHAT I'M ABOUT TO SAY NOW WILL COME OUT RATHER STRONG. SO, DON'T FEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO REPLY.

IN FACT,I ENCOURAGE YOU NOT TO.

I said it before, and I'll say it again.

I hold writers who use interviews and such to 'explain' their point or to 'tell us more about the characters' instead of using their own books; in not a very favorable view.

You're a writer, use your writings to make your point. AND don't allow yourself to get influenced by the fans (e.g. the Tonks-Remus relationship [which I believe to counter the much slash of SS/RL or SB/RL found in fanfic], which should have been better handled)

Bernard Show, didn't allow his readers to influence the ending of his play 'Pygmalion'; even though he wrote two different endings. He did not allow for the Higgins-Eliza coupling (which was shown in the movie "My fair lady").

And do you think that Mark Twain, after writing his short story 'A medieval story' (I'm not very sure of the title…forgive me). Didn't get letters asking/demanding that he should change the very open – cliffhanger ending?

Story tellers create a world to enchant their listeners. They're loyal to that world. If they want to tell about other characters, they do it in a story with a plot. Not in interviews or web sites.

Tolkeins, Created a world and introduced the characters in different stories, each with a plot, no matter how small (No! there IS NO COMPARISON BETWEEN HIM AND JKR. They're not the only writers to create a fictional world. e.g. A Thousand and One Nights, is full of magic and the world of the supernatural). And Tolkeins did not give interviews did he? (but then he is considered a serious writer).

I know what I said seems harsh to some. But it irritates me when I'm told something about a character/event and then discovers that the information was given on an interview or web site.

It only increases my quickly-becoming-conviction of the numerous plot-holes that the writer is NOW trying to explain away.

Faraday, not surprisingly, is a bit offended to get this lecture. Menolike insists that she wasn't being insulting and was merely ranting.

Wintermoon3 says, sensibly, If you are so irritated by interviews and websites that reveal the author's additional thoughts or statements on the books, then why are you torturing yourself in a community specifically designed to discuss theories on these books - theories which are frequently developed, proven or discounted based on statements by that very author in those very interviews and websites?

And Poetheather reminds Menolike about the fact that Professor Tolkien did give several interviews, as a matter of fact. And in them he did discuss the characters of his stories and clarified parts of the narrative. To which Menolike just keeps going ON.

ETA: Menolike tells a girl with a learning disorder that the reason she didn't do well in school was that she was spoiled. And tells her thoughts on the nobility:

Yours is a family who has lots of money, where I come from, that's how your family would be viewed.
They would not be considered rich unless they have lands of their own and an above than average history to go with it. If this family has 'cash in the bank', then that would be considered a plus. But that's it.

My own family doesn't have much 'cash in the bank', but we have the history and land, and so we are considered 'rich'. And yes, my parents made sure our education was much better than average. After all, we must preserve the family's name and honor. To fail would be a disaster (unfortunately that used to lead to some cases of suicide in some families). After all, there still exists the different families rivalry.

This is grade-A batshit. :)

Anyone have an idea what Menolike's native language is? I really can't tell. I admit that this one has my trolldar spinning in sad, helpless, confused circles.

In fact, I’m stocking up on caramel popcorn—now.

If Dean Thomas's history was THAT important; then it should have been included already. Other than that all of those interviews are just vanity.

Where did she get an idea that it was so important? I mean, maybe I missed something in the links, but all I heard was that it was cut. If the argument were, "Is Dean Thomas's history important?" and the answer to it was, "His parts were cut," it would have something to say. But since the question was about whether wizards marry Muggle women, or if half-blood goes the other way as well, then, um, yes, the fact that the author envisioned a storyline in which that was the case does answer it, even if that storyline got cut... or at least, it provides a reasonably good answer to it. If JKR had later decided to go the other way with it, she has textual room to do so, but as nothing she's written has suggested that backstory to be invalid, there's nothing canonical suggesting the theory under discussion, and an authorial statement suggesting it's wrong. Whether the backstory itself is important or not never comes into it. What it says is that the theory itself relates to something that apparently isn't an issue in the Potterverse.

What I like most about Menolike is that she always prefaces her essays/posts with stuff like "WHAT I SAY MAY BE SHOCKING TO FANS OF CHARACTER X, PLEASE BE SITTING DOWN AND HOOKED UP TO A HEART MONITOR BECAUSE I AM ABOUT TO BLOW YOU AWAY WITH MY OUTSIDE-THE-BOX THINKING, AND I KNOW IT WILL GREATLY OFFEND SOME PEOPLE BUT THAT'S A CHANCE I'M WILLING TO TAKE IN THE NAME OF TRUTH, FREEDOM, AND SNAPE'S GREYING UNDERPANTS."

And then you get to the essay only to find that you can't read it because it makes no sense and is only based in canon in the way that she occasionally refers to "Harry Potter" and lo and behold there's a series of popular kids books called "Harry Potter".

The essays never live up to the hype she creates in the headers. :(

In a recent post:
People are weird
That's what I found out from my month and a half in different communities.
They want to force their opinion (and who doesn't) by trying to make you look bad then telling you that YOU are nasty.

You post something, and they ignore it and start arguing a point which you don't know how it popped up and can't seem to get rid of.

Some of them get so heated up about your reply – no matter how polite you try to be – and call you rude. So instead of starting a childish – Byzantine debate; you try to retreat with as much dignity as you can.

But because most of them are 'sensitive' women who have absurd romantic notions, you are not allowed to do that. And whatever you say; it is a personal affront to them.

I'll tell you a secret: I'm neither sensitive nor romantic. I like to stick to the boring facts. But if I'm dealing with fiction, then I allow myself the luxury of exploring within the limits of the fiction. I do like to speculate, but rarely do I have an opinion on the matter. I thought of a reason why? But all I could come up with was: I don't really care to.

I prefer asking questions and casting doubts. For me IT IS more of the journey than the destination itself.
Funny, from reading her essays I've always found them to be:
  1. rarely actually "exploring within the limits of the fiction" and instead leaping to really weird conclusions
  2. highly speculative with a huge dose of opinion for good measure
  3. impolite and childish (comments made to responses to the essays)
  4. forcing her opinion on others with no room for debate
Hmm. Why is my interpretation of her essays so different from hers?

I'm still marveling over the fact that Pygmalion has a different ending than My Fair Lady. Because the ending of My Fair Lady pissed me off. You learn something new every day!

I hold writers who use interviews and such to 'explain' their point or to 'tell us more about the characters' instead of using their own books; in not a very favorable view.

If J.K. Rowling's books were sure to include all the "important" details about her characters, they'd be just like Tolkien's: filled with a prohibitive amount of extra stuff that can be confusing and boring to the not-completely-obsessed reader.

I mean, I like Tolkien as much as the next person, but if Harry Potter books read like The Silmarillion, you can bet your ass that they would put kids to sleep. And children, not adults who write extremely detailed essays, are the target audience.

I'm neither you mother, father, brother or sister. It's a fiction we are discussing. Not real life people. IT DOESN'T MATTER IN ANY WAY.
