Clay Aiken Wank Gets Media Attention!
The Smoking Gun is now reporting about a snail mail flame war that Clay Aiken fanatics have launched against the FCC. Says TSG:

You'll find an entertaining assortment of those letters, many of which include nasty swipes about Studdard's weight and the prodigious amount of flop sweat that pours forth as he croons. As one writer concluded, "something stinks here and it's not Rubens sweaty 205 jersey." But in case you think all the missives were coming from miffed teenyboppers, we've included letters from a chemical engineer and a 56-year-old Colorado businesswoman.

Man, these letters are HYSTERICAL. And. Um. Not making entirely erroneous claims. *cough*.

You can read them all here.

I hate it when stuff like this happens. TSG can sift through the mail and find the most outrageous letters to hold up as representative. Not that selective editing is unique to TSG, but just because the practice is widespread doesn't mean it's not disingenuous.

Not that this changes the fact that a lot of those letter-writers are morons, or at least mistakenly believe they're writing to FOX. Do they think the FCC cares that they'll buy Clay's album, or that Trenyce got robbed? Such idiots make the legitimate claims of manipulation and incompetence look foolish.

heh. If they can prove that Fox manipulated things, then the FCC is the right person to complain to. The FCC handled other instances of cheating with game shows...

Oh, I agree that the FCC is the proper authority to write to. I just don't see why saying "I'll never watch a FOX program again" should matter to them.

Do you really think so? Some of them were a bit silly, but really, I think they could have been way worse. Some of them managed to sound relatively reasonable. And yeah, the FCC was the right person to complain to-- keep in mind that many of those letters and e-mails were sent to more than one person at a time.

"Clay will be the next Frank Sinatra."

I really hope that guy was joking. Seriously...how could anybody get that upset over something like that? XD

Really. I'm a fan, and I wanted him to win, and I was upset for a few days when he lost... but now? I'm totally over it. He's doing just fine, even better than the winner. The real competition's taking place on the charts, and what happened a few months ago on the show is quickly becoming irrelevant. Not sure why people still have a hang-up about it.

Besides, I'm way too lazy to participate in any letter-writing campaign. I mean, come on, licking those stamps takes effort.

To be fair, those letters were dated mid-May.

I mean, come on, licking those stamps takes effort.

Heh. No comment.

...isn't this [info]fw_offline shit?

Just asking.

Also: Maybe Amazon employees are hiding Ruben's single?

...isn't this fw_offline shit?

I don't see how, if none of these documents is available offline.

I'm personally less bothered by [info]fw_offline stuff than I am by the every-other-post that says "This isn't fandom, BUT..." One would think no one has ever heard of LJ Drama. ;)

Heh, I only said that because it was snailmail as opposed to email.

But...yeah.

a 350 lb guy who chose to wear the same sweaty 205 jersy every week.

Dude, from all reports, he had a deal with the makers of the 205 jerseys. Relax.
