Over at FFR [info]annwyd posts that writing a pairing debunking fanfic is a waste of time. People agree until [info]mhari announces her intention to write one anyway, which predictably, [info]annwyd thinks is totally going to suck.

It's tiny yet, but it's still pretty new.

Quick question! Is this the same Mhari that used to write X-Men porn with an enthusiastic OC that beguiled all who saw her and drove them into a sexual frenzy? 'Cause if so I question her ability to debunk my love of any pairing.

You know, I don't know. I haven't been in the X-Men fandom in a very long time.

Dude, pairings that won't work are the best kind! It's when people get serious and earnest about it that eveything goes straight to hell and Domo-kun maturbates. Or however that works.

Pence x Tron = awesome.

writing a pairing debunking fanfic is a waste of time

I have pretty much no opinion on the subject under discussion, but I want to stick up for every fan's right to waste time! I'm currently writing a fic about a pairing that 99% of people tell me just isn't viable because the characters have no charisma and no chemistry and I'm sure they'd say I was wasting my time doing so, but that isn't going to stop me. When it's finished, I'll make it generally available in the hope of reaching the 1% who agree with me.

I don't actually see the point of writing something just to debunk someone else's pet theory (in a fandom context, anyway), but I can sympathise with anyone who finds that they can't not write a given story even if they realise it isn't going to be popular. There are times when the characters insist on having their own way and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Besides, always writing what you know is going to be popular seems like a bit of a sell-out to me.

I think the OP used the wrong terms here.

I think they meant to say 'pairing bashing' fics and I agree with them.

I mean it's one thing to write a fic about a relationship not working out, heck it'd be nice if fandom would acknowledge that not every relationship is True Love, and sometimes there's a reason why we aren't with our high school sweethearts.

But if all you're going to do is rag on pairing because you don't like it, then yeah it might be better to hold off on the fic.

Pairing bashing fics are not a waste of time. They are an important weapon in the ship wars.

And anyway, posting in ffr and accusing others of wasting their time? Okay then.

Duh, of course pairing debunking fanfic is a waste of time. All fanfiction is a waste of time--that's why people like it, as it's more fun to waste time than do sensible stuff.

Writing fic out of spite (for a ship or character) can be pretty wanky, but it's not as wanky as saying that all fics involving any given pairing must be supportive of that pairing or they'll automatically suck. I belong to a comm devoted to break-up fics of a pairing I dislike and, yeah, there is some atrocious fic there, but some of it is actually pretty good. (I find the difference between the wanky and non-wanky fics, as is so often the case in fandom, depends largely on whether or not the author has a sense of humour.)

I love pairings that supposedly can't be written. Where's the fun in the umpteenth fic about everybody's favorite UST couple? Mulder/Scully, Schmulder/Schcully, I say.

Giles/Dawn, Starbuck/Adama, that's where the challenge is.
