Zuko's eye color.

Over on fanficrants, shes_unreal has very firm opinions on this matter of earth-shattering importance. Gold? Yes. Amber? ... acceptable. Yellow? NO WAY IN HELL! ARE YOU BLIND? DIDN'T YOU PLAY WITH CRAYONS AS A KID?

No, wait, it is.

Worst part is that the one picture of Zuko she posted is the ONE where his eyes look MORE YELLOW THAN IN ANY OTHER PICTURE OF HIM. EVER. Bad choice, much?

Yeah... As soon as I read that one, I knew it wouldn't end well.

I can kind of understand her POV (to me, yellow + eyes = evil and/or illness), but DAMN did she get defensive.

By the way, this is my rant. Other people's opinions and whether or not that descriptor bothers them are irrelevant. And they aren't going to change my mind on this particular matter.

Isn't amber sort of an orangy-red and not very much like gold at all. Which, incidentally, is way closer to yellow than amber.

To me, Zuko's eye's looked more yellowish-brown than gold.

The hell? Amber. Honey. Gold. If you're talking eye colors, they're all shades of Yellow. It's really not such an OMGHORRIBLE thing to just say Yellow, unless you don't think it's a speshul enough word to be used. Geez.

being a freelance artist myself (I tend to think in colors of paints or pencils: saffron, sienna, ochre, amber, copper, brass, bronze, poppy)

Orange, brown, which one? Red? Yellow? (after all, YMMV), yellow, orange, yellow, brown, red? (again, YMMV)

Huh, that is funny. Whenever people in anime/cartoons/whathaveyou have "gold" eyes, it always just looks like a flat, tinny yellow to me due to cel shading. It's not multi-faceted or deep, it's on flat coloured, probably filled in with a paint bucket in an art program. Not worth getting angry over.

I know the most common form of colorblindness is red/green*, but couldn't some people perceive the color yellow diffently that others? People with red/green color blindness do have better perceptions of yellows and browns so I'm sure what I see as "yellow" someone with better yellow/brown reception might see it as "amber" or "golden sepia" or some other fancy non-Crayola color.

(My mother and I have a bitter ongoing debate over this. I say they're yellow, she says they're amber. She learned British English, I didn't. How can we possibly come to a consensus? Brothers, sisters, come together!)

I'm thinking of how in the UK they refer to the "slow down" traffic lights as being "amber," while in the US they're "yellow." And unless I'm mistaken, they're the same colour.

And am I the only one who can't tell what colour Tomo's eyes are from those pics? They look slightly blue in one pic and I can barely see them in the other.
